Idea MD information for all of you!!!

And please if I get anything wrong please correct me. I'm rather new at the whole MiniDisc thing. Although I've been reading ALOT lately, and am now the proud owner of a new Sony MZ-N707.

So anyway, this is what I know. You can not transfer from the MD player to the computer digitally. The only way to do it is through the analog out on the MD to the analog In through the computer. This degrades sound quality due to converting from a digital signal down to analog, and back to digital.

Next, NetMD, it does let you transfer from your computer to the MD player via USB. Even at a faster rate then 1x. The only thing is, to get those faster rates you're sacraficing some sound quality, cause it transfers at lower bitrates. Now logic should say that you'd be able to upload right? Well logic isn't in place here and you can't as of yet. Although from what i've read a 2000+ petition has been sent to sony and they had some BS reply about how they're not interested in it. Althouhg you can look to 3rd party software to find a solution I'd wager inside of 6 months.

I've also found that the sony's optical line in is also an analog line in. It even says so in the manual.

I cna't think of anything else useful right now, but I have also found OSX software solutions to the Sony MD software which is windows only. So if any Mac users need soem help don' be afraid to ask. Again if I'm wrong about nay of this don't feel bad correcting me, and please feel free to add what you can.

Talking Some other stuff I forgot

Okay so I also forgot to say that you can easily hook up an MD player to yoru mixer directly for about $10 worth of equipment from Radioshack. you just need a couple mono to mono plug adapters which split your Aduio out from the mixer into 4 channels. 2 rights and 2 lefts. Then you jsut hook a Y-cable to them, and your stereo. now you've rady to record yoru sets whenver!!!

Also Minidisc is re-recordable, sony claims something like a million re-recordings for the disc to go bad.

oh and one more thing, I'm talking about portable MD players that also have record functions.

You only need one cable to record your set onto a minidisc. You just the the cable that has two RCAs on one end and a 1/8 inch jack on the other end. Shouldn't cost more than a couple of bucks.

I don't see why you would want to record 4 channels

sonys MD players are VERY VERY picky about digital transfers back and forth, because of copyright issues. the bullshit software that they make you use to do this requires that you "check out" your music, then it can't be played, or transferred again, till you check it back in, like a library book.. Or something like that, my friend has one and that's what he told me.

it's beacause they don't want MDs being used as copy right infringement tools, remember sony is also a music label.

so, i just use the analog in and out, it sounds FINE, not super good, but really quite good enough for any practical purpose except maybe professionally producing a CD or track.

as for other software, there IS already i am pretty sure, check www.minidisc.org
