Do Australians Play Hockey?
Question from a hockey loving canadian....I hear you get winter in australia....ya play hockey?.
um yes we get winter
but we dont get snow... n its not cold enuf to play ice hockey
i know of a guy who plays ice-hockey in aust.
going over to canada soon to play for aust.
but its not a common sport, here
yeah .. our winter is probably on par with your summer, 2-20 degrees C
aussies suck at most winter sports, we've only ever won 2 gold medals at the Winter Olympics (and both of those were in Salt Lake City) - so not really any ice hockey to speak of...
we are pretty good at field hockey though

Hockey? what is this....Hockey?
there is plenty of hockey out here, but you won't play against many aussies, but against ex-pat canadians, austrians, swedes and the like. Don't expect great facilities either, only 1 place even has glass over the boards that I know of in sydney. And make sure you bring your gear over cos it's hellish expensive here, I get my skates via mail order from america, cos it's about 1/3 the price even with the risk of a bad fit.
If you want to play serious, superleague takes in all the east coast cities, there's a few in-house comps going, and some nice regular pick-up games I enjoy whilst making the transition from in-line hockey. A lot of the canadians I used to play with gave up cos they didn't want pick-up type games, and couldn't be bothered training 2-3 nights weeks as well, and there's not a lot in between.
If you want more casual stuff, there's plenty of in-line, ranging from casual beginner friendly stuff up to pretty serious.
just remember though, not many cities in the world where you can surf in the morning, play hockey in the evening like you can here
tubby
HOCKEY IS CANADA.....simply a game of ppl wearing protective gear....skating around a frozen rink....hitting a 6 oz hunk of galvanized rubber with sticks at the other net....with a goalie with even more protective equipment....mad as hell trying to stop you from scoring....with fights....and angry ppl on the benches and ice....=pure bliss....i played goalie for 10 yrs...
i like seeing the fights on sports tonight
i loved playing like nhl 93 or something where you could get in a fight and it zooms in like street fighter and you start actually fighting! hehe it was funny. gave me hella sore thumbs though
its got to be just about the only non-martial arts sport where the refs just stand around watching the fighting instead of trying to break it up hehe
