My first gig, read to see what i have to say
Well here is just another review of a fellow TA's first gig.
A friend of mine, organized a party in a lounge of Roxy(a big club in NYC).
He originally got me, a friend of mine, and another guy to spin for the whole night.
When i get there, i see the crowd is not really limited to the lounge so everyone keeps walking in and out, so no one is actually dancing. I was supposed to go on second, but as it was getting late I told the guy that i'll go on first. This is my first time spinning at a club/not using my own equipment. They had a pair of 1210, and a pioneer knob mixer. How happy was I to find out that, the knob mixer only had volume and gain knobs. No high, no mid, no low, nothing!!!!! WTF!!!
Whatever, I thought I gotta pay my dues so i'll do my best.
I played for a little more than an hour, and maybe trainwrecked the first two songs(because I could not get used to the monitor speakers)
Actually, there was only one monitor speaker, so imagine my happiness.
More fun ahead, the equipment was so badly set up, that everytime someone ran up to me to say something, the turntables skipped. Luckily this did not happen during one of my mixes, but it was quite annoying.
Finally, at the end of my set, as I was finishing up, I talked to the other two djs and they said I was awesome. Then when I came up to my non loving trance friends, they didnt have many good things to say. One thing that a friend of mine said, is that the set didnt flow. I like getting feedback whether positive/negative, but for some reason I got pretty mad and have been thinking about what he said ever since. I was trying to lay off the progressive stuff, because i only had an hour and wanted to pump the people up.
I will post my tracklisting, and maybe u can tell me if you think it flows or maybe how i can improve it.
Thanks a lot guys.
Tracklisting:
1. Yoji Biomehanika - Theme from Banginglobe(System F remix)
2. Ferry Corsten - Punk(Kid Vicious Remix)
3. Eon - Pocket Damage
4. Plastic Boy - Silver Bath
5. Talla 2xlc - Can You Feel the Silence(Club mix)
6. Gouryella - Ligaya(Vocal mix)
7. Kirsty Harkshaw - Its a fine day(Mike Koglin remix)
8. BK - Revolution
9. Delerium - Heaven's Earth(Matt Darey Remix) (I like to throw in a classic here and there)
dude it wasnt you man your track list was good love the kid vicicius thrown in there i love that remix
but hardly anyone plays it at the raves around here
but i would have told the guy "look im not spinnin on that piece of shit
either you get me at LEAST, at the VERY LEST a mixer like a newmark or something man or im not fucking goin out on that shit like my grandmother grew up with better shit than that
" it wasnt your fault man it was the equip. you were on good luck on finding someone with beter equip so you can show your home town what you can do
tracks 3-7 flow beautiful, Depending on how you mix em obviously. If you did a great job and you think it had a nice flow then f. him.
Thanks a lot for the support guys, that really helped.
Hopefully next time I'll get better equipment!!!!
X-tronic, ne valnuicya !
my first gig @ the club/rave i was kinda nervous too... anyway
u spin my style, so thats cool ! especially adding "Kirsty Harkshaw - Its a fine day(Mike Koglin remix)" into your set....would make me jump!
...its USA man...people are wiered & have a shitty stubborn music choices...
yoo xtronic, i know how u feel..i played in the same room @ roxy in october..its soo ghetto..that rane mixer SUCKS! its not a pioneer its a rane..its got no EQ's..yaa it sucks..and no1 is ever in that rooom! also when i spun there, i had no monitors which made it nearly impossible to tell if the beats were on or not but some how i got through and my friends said my mixing was good, but yea..it was still fun spinnin in there when i spun in there. i spun trance as well, the other djs i spun with played like commericalized shit and 150 bpm hard house....lol.it was weird but also a good experience as well.
The tracks look fine. I played last weekend and played Ligya- FC rmx ith Fine day and Silence shortly after. So those tracks do flow together. Might have been the way you mixed them in. We'd have to hear it to know.
sorry dude . . . no offense, but you asked for criticism . . .
I don't think those tracks would flow and I would never play those tracks in that order . . . I don't see a natural build to it
not that I would really mind listening to it, though . . . especially any set that starts off with three Ferry Corsten tracks in a row!
but yeah, without actually hearing it, I'd say nice tracks, but think about a different order
I dont mind critisizm but just gimme something to work with, like if you say that it doesnt flow, say in what way does it not flow and tell me how to improve it
hahha they have a rane mixer without the EQ board
I've always wondered why they sold them separetely
anyhow keep it up!
and the room you're talking about ... is that the thing all the way to the side?
I somehow thought that was vip or some shit ....

Dude, it's not your fault at all, your tracklist was awesome. If the mixer sucks then it's the club's problem, the DJ can only try to make do with whatever he has been given (which I'm sure you tried your best to do). As long as the crowd danced I'm convinced you did your job!
man if a dj told you that you where awesome it means you rocked, because djs can easily tell if someone else is good or not. Also, if a 'nontrancer' tells you that you suck it shouldn't bother you, it was only natural that they wouldn't like it
oh and my mixer has NO EQS
and I managed to pull it off and I also hit some awesome transitions sometimes
so I don't think you sounded bad even without eqs

If people don't dance try throwing in some classic like salt tank - eugina or freefall - skydive etc. Just remember there will always be people who like you for what you do and also who don't...don't let them get you down.
This will give you a kind of experience.
If I were you in the same condition of work, I just would have to try playing a set in a progressive way, start with some slow beats and then playing more and more faster and pumping releases. I think that when you don't have all the equipments you need to perform a good set this solution should be the best. But there is also the crowd, and when they dont dance you can panic and then spinning pumping release and the flow is not respected. Try to build you set before, only the beginning and when you see the crowd following you, it's possible for you to improvise and play with them. That's no easy, the link between them and you is the seduction, seduce them and they will answer but start slowly, don't make them afraid of you, don't be too aggressive in the beginning.
Hmmm
Hey, why didnt you take your own mixer or ask them what they got before you get there? Its very hard to play at others mixer or cds in my case because the pitch isnt like my pich and so on... ?? my tips is that you check what they got if they dosent got what you want rent it from someone or just ask them to fix it...
