Thumbs down

Hey all.
I'm a little frustrated. It's because of my DJ-Name. Maybe it's not the coolest, but I've been using it for three years now and have played at various clubs, at the Loveparade and with DJs like Taucher, Kai Tracid, Gary D., Cosmic Gate...
I just got my own domain djdawn.de and a week after it was online, I get an e-mail from some f#*'head who tells me he has copyrighted "DJ Dawn" and it is now all rights reserved and I can't use it anymore and have to take the site offline. S**t!
I don't know what to do. I need a new name, but how are people gonna know it's me? It's not that I'm really well-known or anything, but in North-Germany there are some people who like my sound and come to see me play.
Please help, any suggestions for cool names are welcome. (Maybe T.A.F.K.A.D. )The only thing I came up with is having it say both names (new and old) on the flyers for a couple of months.
Copyright sucks ! (When it's not yours...)

Damn thats 2 bad for you...
"The Artist Formally Known As Djdawn" is an option
But maybe "Prince" will send you an email that he has Copyright on that kinda names...
Good luck with it

Posted by Blik on May-08-2001 13:37:

That sucks indeed DJ-Dawn, I got a new name Dj-DaMn

on the flyers:

Dj-Damn aKa dj-dawn

cool huh?

Posted by djdawn on May-08-2001 13:54:

lol, DJ Damn !
not bad, I came up with another one:
DJ Dorn
It's German for Thorn and is pronounced just like Dawn in english, so when you read it, there's no difference...
well, I'm gonna have to do some brainstorming with a couple of friends. BTW, does anyone know where you can check for names that are allready copyrighted so this crap won't happen to me again ?

Posted by SteveTranz4ever on May-08-2001 14:06:

I think you should just add a letter to the word dawn like
DJ Dawnn

DJ Dawwn

DJ Daawn

My guess most of your fans will recognize you easiest by just change your name as little as possible. Everyone will still pronouns it the same.

Or maybe DJ Dawns (dawns sounds almost like Dance) and with the s on the end means that something is owned by dawn.

This all might sound stupid, I hope I gave you some more to think about, some thoughts in your head.

I think that DJ Dorn sounds pretty sweet... I mean, not quite as good, but it definitely works... Besides, when someone says your name over the speakers at an event/club, it will sound like DJ Dawn neways.... Just my opinion

Posted by Henkie_henk on May-08-2001 16:26:

Are you really really sure the guy who send you an email is right?? he really "bought" it etc.. Just check "dont know the words for it" just check the stuff you need to check and go to the "kamer van koophandel" lol or something like that...

Check before you change yr name...

and/or try to buy the name from him.. my dad had/has the name www.hollywood.nl some people wanted to buy it.. When the price is right

Posted by Blik on May-08-2001 17:55:

Like Henk said, check out if he has some proof that he is tha owner of the name, he must have some evidence I think

Posted by theeyesofdarkness on May-08-2001 18:01:

i totally agree with henkie. dude.. check first. that guy could be lying out his ass. and if so he may intend to buy that name soon so if you want to keep your name you may want to go ahead and try and buy it yourself before he does. but there are just a whole lot of assholes in this world so theres a great chance hes lying. but dont ask him to show you proof. he could show you anything.. but shitty if it is true and good luck with your new name.. dj dorn is a pretty good alternative. peace!!

just say that U copyrighted the name in 1980 or something
and its on lifetime copyright.. if he wants to mess.. sue me.. type thing

Try "Dj Dhawn" or "Dj Dawne".

Question

just a suggestoin man, dont laugh..
but why not just take the DJ out and make it "dawn" ... wouldnt that be alright?? ..youd just sound more of a producer, but producers still mix and shit=)..
well just a suggestion...

Posted by djdawn on May-09-2001 06:51:

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I like "DJ D@wn" and actally I thought about just Dawn without the "DJ", too. It says just "Dawn" on a lot of flyers, anyway. But I don't know if all these are different enough to not interfere with the copyright. I mean, could you make a softdrink called Coc@-Col@ with no problems?

But you're right, I'll will check if he really owns the copyright before I change my name. But the guy seemed serious. He also took the name from 2 other guys who where using it that I didn't know of, before. DJ-Dawn.de is closed, too.
But it will take a while to find out, since I don't want to ask him. There's got to be some place where they have a list of all copyrighted names...I'll look for that.
Thanks, guys (and girls )
I'll keep you informed.

Thumbs up

I wonder if this helps call your self DJ Break OF Dawn .

I did a search for you and what I found was:
DJDAWN.COM is taken. If you go to Register.com you can find out who owns it.
But...when I did a search of DJ Dawn to see if it was a registered trademark, I found that it was not registered as such (at least not in USA, Canada or Europe)
The name DJ Dawn can not be a copyright. It can be a trademark but it looks as though that has not been done, yet. Copyrights apply to things like pictures, music, books etc. but not to names. Trademarks apply to names.
You might want to check into getting it trademarked. I think it cost about $65 to have that done. Try going to
WWW.NAMEPROTECT.COM
If you can afford it, try applying for a trademark for DJ DAWN and if it is already taken...you will find out.
There is a chance that the person that sent you the E-mail is intending on trademarking the name but hasn't done so yet. So...you should move on this as quickly as possible.
Best of luck to you. I hope it works out for you.

When you want to register a name you have to go to the place in your country where you register a company. Start a firm named DJ Dawn and then you will automaticly get a trademark for the name DJ Dawn. This works in Finland and I think it should work there too. You have to check the regulations about international trademaks as well to get it registered in the whole world. Hope this helps.

Posted by Linx_da_cat on May-10-2001 14:30:

yeah...about domains and shit, i would use a registering company like network solutions (www.networksolutions.com), some company's screw you over...i have a friend who had that happen to him. so use network solutions imo. they're good.
