Hey Guys,
I've read through most of this forum, and having just got hold of a legal copy of Reason 2, I'm really excited to be moving into production.

I'm a complete newbie at the moment, but I've worked out the basic tools of reason...

My question is, just generally (cus I'm sure you don't want to share all your secrets), how do I go from having a single syth playing a very simple piano like sound, to the Ferry Corsten-ish crazy syths that sound fantastic that some of you can produce...

Any help, gratefully recieved.

Go to the refills section of www.reasonstation.net for some good trance patches for subtractor. Look under the refills section.

Its always good to try and layer your synths to get a phatter, more trancey type sound. Experimentation is the key.

I would recommend reading up on synths (this has helped me a LOT). Search for synth reading material on Google, or check out the book Sound Synthesis and Sampling (this is the book that I'm reading at the moment).

If you really are as new as you say you are then I have one single piece of advice that will turn your weedy single synth line into something better:
Delay

Run your Subtractor patch through a stereo delay or echo effect and play around with the delay time until it sounds better (try irregular intervals like 3/4). Having a different delay time for the left and right sometimes helps too.

Personally, I've never written anything without at least one delay effect. But, above all else, experiment and have fun!

Reverb is also essential in achieving the phat synth sound.

Don't go overboard with it, though.
