4wd why do ppl drive them?

to me they are a disgrace and have been proved to be the most unsafe car. tests show 4wd and suv's are more likley to tip in a car crash , and the person on the other end of the crash has little chance of surviving. I understand ppl on farms and the outback having them because they have a real use for it.

i think there unsafe and should be banned.

I'll tell you why people buy four wheel drives:

You have a big family, a few kids. You need a big car. Your car is a reflection of your personality. What image does a people mover or van project? "I'm a loser with lots of kids and no life because I drive a shitty slow van that's nice and sensible." Not wanting to project this image to others, you go and buy a 4wd because it's got almost as much space for the kids, but gives you that "wild, break-free, I could go cruising sand dunes and climbing rock hills and escape down dirt tracks right now if I wanted to" image. 95% of people who buy 4wds never do any of this, but buying the 4wd in the first place makes you think that you can.

So there you have it
Sorry you asked?

I think that people that drive 4wds need a course or something similar to teach them how to drive one. Ive seen people driving around corners at around 50-60 kms an hour in 4wds drives and think to my self that they will eventually roll their their precious vehicle and crack their heads open. Maybe that will teach them?

Most people that buy 4wd's are ubran wanker yuppies and really should not be buying them in my opinion.

BMW's are nice cars though, not huge ugly 2.5 tonne pieces of shit.

I generally find that drivers of 4WD's think they are king of the road when they are on it. They think they have their own road rules cause they have a 4WD. Of course they are allowed to drive over gutters, along the pavement, and of course if there are no parks within 100 meters then just drive her up on the footpath and park her there. Hell even just stop in the middle of the road, throw her in park, go to the bank, come back and drive away, I mean that's all fine if you have a 4WD.

Yes yes I've seen all this plus much much much more!

If I ever by a 4WD then it's a signal that my life is over and someone shoot me now. I don't have any more capacity for logical thought.

We are all talking about the big huge arse 4WDs that are actually used to go bush. Well there is also the small sports cars that rely a lot on 4WD to get the power down. For example a WRX or Evo 6/7. I wouldn't mind one of those.

True most ppl who buy the big 4WDs don't use them 4 their proper purpose. But it's as much a status thing as anything else, for example my friends dad got a Range Rover and now my dad wants one... like he'll ever use the bloody thing 4 it's actual purpose, or let me use it. I also agree that no one likes those gay people movers.

I wouldn't mind a 4WD, but I would use it for it's proper purpose... to go bush bashing.

And I wouldn't even look at the BMW, Merc tryhard 4WDs, even though they get good reviews... as if anyones going to take their Merc bush bashing, they cost too much..and what if u scratched it???!!? Now even Porsche are bringing out a 4WD (And they look totally gay, it's like a 4WD with the front of a 911 Carrera bolted onto the front)... what a joke.

they may look better than some 4wd's but the target market isnt going to use it for actual 4wding. So they still suck.

suburban nightmare...

I have no issue with people who actually use their 4WD for its real purpose- bush bashing and the like. However, I'm sure that the majority of people who do drive 4WD's don't use them for these purposes. In fact, many of the 4WD drivers I have come across are pretentious middle-aged mums who use their 4WD to drop off and pick up their kids from school. These are the some mothers who wreck havoc in shopping centre car parks as they hold up traffic parking their atrocious vehicles in the most inconvenient of places, while trying to entertain their obnoxious kids in the back seat. Ive seen one incompetent driver cut across traffic in a shopping centre car park with no consideration for other drivers, thus almost causing an accident. And then the little bitch in the back seat yelled out "idiots" from the window. I wasn't going to put up with crap from a conceited eight year old... heh, for once my mum wasnt upset with me swearing at people!

Seeing as 4WDs have been proven unsafe, perhaps there should be some specific license that people need in order to drive one. People who want a 4WD could then be educated on how to actually drive them properly. This would hopefully decrease the amount of arrogant assholes on the road with clearly no consideration and no idea how to drive safely.

Im sure that many people who do own 4WDs are just fashion victims who want them for the supposed image they have. Yknow, something to show off to the neighbours. Come on! why dont you take your 4WD out of the suburbs for once and put it to good use!?

Lol all car cmpanies are trying to get in to AWD now. Was Subaru the first to start manufacturing AWD? Because now every one of their cars comes in AWD. And btw, I'd rather have a Subbie AWD than a Ford or Holden AWD anyday, oops I do have a Subbie AWD

Posted by webmeister on Jan-19-2003 06:04:

AWD has been around much much longer than Subaru

First AWD car was built in 1902
