Super Bowl XXXVII - Oakland Raiders vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

So here we are, less than a week before the most anticipated sporting event in the world!!!! I'm thinking this is going to be one amazing game in all aspects. Raiders recievers versus Bucs secondary is going to be where the game is won or lost IMO. Definately an even matchup on paper you'd think, but as of today the Raiders were a 4 point favourite. Look for the Bucs to at least cover.

150 countries my arse. Is England included on that list? Because it shouldn't be. I've never in my life known anyone who even knows the rules to American football, let alone watch it. Noone gives a shit mate. If you left North America you would struggle to find anyone to talk to about American football. You'd be stuck with ex-pats discussing the countless 'commercials' in between touchdowns and watching cheerleaders prance around. I wouldn't have this problem, because all over the world 'soccer' is a passion, in last year's world cup we had teams like Senegal (in Africa) beating the previous world champions France.

Fact is his statement was absolute rubbish. The World Cup is the most anticipated sporting event in the world, bar none. Football ('soccer')is played and watched all over the world, and I don't mean it in the way you do which means nothing. From the slums of Nigeria and Brazil to the fields of England and Korea, football is EVERYWHERE.

I seriously doubt American football is the most publicized either, even accounting for the fact that the US has far more adverts in general on TV than anybody else. I also fail to see what publicity even has to do with it. Football doesn't need publicity, there is a massive following on every continent, and many people are sick to death of commercialisation as it is.

As for your personal opinion on football, that's an aside. I don't like American football either.

ok ill put the superbowl, champions leage cups, world cups, etc.. all aside, ill just compare the 2 sports,... (first lets use the word soccer b/c american football has no other name unlike your football) i played soccer for 5 years as a kid growing up even before i knew how to play football,... but as i got older soccer grows out of interest with people here,... i mean my university didnt even have soccer as a sport for men,.. but football brings in millions and millions of dollars to our school,.. i mean my old school's football stadium holds 90,000 people,.. and the Bucs (football team now in teh superbowl) holds 70,000 people, i know that some massive stadiums like mayday in Korea or out way out east there are some big ones,.. ok but back to the sport,.. football is so much more game planning and film studies and knowing your opponent and the type of plays they run,.. soccer is just a bunch of athletes running around chasing a ball,.. yes i realize there are set up type plays etc.. but nothing like football, its like a cult phenomonen over here,.. im obessed with it and like for intramural sports at my school few years ago there are 400-500 football teams vs. 50 or so soccer (my school held 47,000 students),... ok im getting off subject,...teh fact that i can think about football and planning set plays and execution of plays during off time is fun in its self,.. but for soccer its just put on some cleats and head out,.. nothing to think about really inbetween games,... plus like i said before, where is the scoring?? i do want to hear your insite as well,.. merci

American football is THE number one sport watched in the states...there is no need to bash it...i love it just like the rest of the people who live in the US...the one sporting event everyone looks forward to in the states is the superbowl. obviously the person who said this event is the most anticpated sporting even tin the WORLD is wrong because outside of the states nobody gives a shit about american football which shouldn't be too shocking to anyone. people have to remember this forum is a global forum and obviously many countries around the world have their own sports interests, etc.

I know how unimportant 'soccer' is in the US, the rest of the world knows this and some think it is ashame, some aren't bothered either way. Soccer has really grown in Africa in the last 10 years and the Asian sides gave everyone a run for their money in the last world cup. In Australasia there is a small but growing following (although cricket/rugby are bound to be their national sports for a long time to come) and of corse the South Americans and Europeans have worshipped football for a long time now. It seems the US is the missing piece in the jigsaw, and you can understand why some people think the US is isolationist. They're not necessarily talking about foreign policy or politics.

As I say, I don't fully understand the rules of American football, but there are a few things I dislike about the sport already. Firstly, it is the stop/start nature of the game. I am used to the constant flow of play in soccer, and I find it frustrating to see play stopped again, and again, and again. This I consider boring more than anything else. I can understand why many Americans find soccer 'boring', if I watch two random soccer teams play I am completely disinterested, unless I know who those teams are or they are playing a fluent and engaging game. Another thing I dislike about American football is the frequency of touchdowns, though this is more of a petty issue. When I go into pubs full of Americans and they are showing American football I see people talking during the constant breaks, and clapping, maybe cheering, when a touchdown is scored. But there are so many touchdowns that people don't go absolutely mental when one is scored. With soccer, a goal is a very prescious thing, and when someone scores the bar goes absolutely mental, everybody is jumping up and down and shouting, people begin to chant songs,, and you'll nearly always get someone's beer spilled all over you in the celebrations. As I say though, this is a petty issue and I really fail to see your point. An awful lot of scoring, not much scoring, it's all dependant on context. Yes there is more scoring in American football, but also each 'score' is worth less than a goal in soccer, so it works out the same, it isn't really an issue.

I disagree that there is much more planning in American football. I would say it is very difficult to compare because they are completely different sports. You could probably write reams about planning in American football, likewise so could I with soccer. The sportsmen in soccer and American football possess very different qualities. Wheras in American football they are often stocky men with a very specific role, soccer players must have boundless energy, endless stamina and must be proficient in many aspects of the game. Soccer players must be very flexible to deal with the changing nature of any game.

Lastly, there're the little things which bug me. For example the cheerleaders, men in the stands selling food etc. People here won't tolerate that, people go to the game to see the game, the support behind soccer and American football is different too. I'm sure there are things you would dislike about English support too, for example we simply don't have room for such extravagant stadiums, and fans prefer to make their own celebrations.

I am not "bashing" American football, the two sports are very different and have stemmed from different cultures. As somebody who grew up with a completely different sport in a different sporting culture, I hope you can understand why American football differs in so many ways to the game I love. Likewise, I understand why soccer is something you do not relate with with the same passion, because it is a different nature of game to your own. Each to their own.

good insite with what you said about soccer, but ill give you one statistic that doesnt lie,... 12.8% of the world will be watching which equates to 800 million out of 6.27 billion,... more than 1 in every 10,... and thats for a sport that only 1 country participates in...

Why do soccer fans feel the need to either bash football, or argue that soccer is better? This wasnt a thread about soccer vs. football, it was a thread about the SUPER BOWL. If you dont understand football then dont watch it, dont talk about it, its really that simple. I find it really annoying that in this so called "Sports Discussion" forum, its always about which sport is better than the other sport. And why!?!? WHO FUCKING KNOWS WHY?!?!? Id love it to see the odd time that i do visit this forum, people discussing the sports they enjoy, and debating within the sport itself, not comparing it to other sports. Myself, i cant justify sitting in front of a television for a 90 minute soccer game to MAYBE see a couple of goals. Its pointless and boring to me. But on the other hand i do respect the sport, and all sports in general, so thats why when i see all these soccer threads i let them be for the people who truly enjoy the sport.

Will be watching what....? The Superbowl? Give me the stats for an ordinary NFL game and I might begin to take that claim seriously. I find that statistic dubious as it is. 1 in 10 people? In the UK, 1 in 1000 people might check the result or something. I'm sure the Superbowl will be screened in the UK, because of the dominance the US has over television, but noone here will be watching it.

Then you should have a look at the figures for the World Cup Final and see things in perspective.

Also that "one" country, the United States, is a massive country which has a massive influence over television. I can assure you, very few people outside of the US will be watching the biggest event in the American Football calendar. I think you are being misguided by such statistics, leave North America and you will not find a trace of American football.

I am not belittling American football here, I am trying to correct a misconception.

Look mate, perhaps you should heed your own advice because this is the second hypocritical remark from you. I suggest you flick back to the start of this thread and see just who began insulting other people's sports. American football is not the biggest sport in the world. That is a fact relevant to the original post, it is not 'bashing'. If you take offence at that it is you who has the problem. The facts are at hand, there is nothing to debate, so why don't we both just laugh at the idiocy of the original comment and move on? End of.
