Confused Is trance dead in Australia?

I rang a friend in Melbourne (progressive house DJ) today and he says trance is dead there. He said There is hard trance (and hard house) and progressive, but nothing in the middle.

I find that hard to believe. What do you guys think?

Posted by Chuck Norris on Jan-22-2003 09:41:

Your friend is exactly right

Posted by webmeister on Jan-22-2003 10:35:

hmm .. I wouldn't say trance in Australia is dead, but I would definitely say its underground. Simply because there is only a very small following.

Whether that's a bad thing or not, I'll leave up to you to decide

Posted by Chookie on Jan-22-2003 11:06:

There seems to be a very small following, maybe due to there not being much Trance nights around, however I think it's ok that way.
I wouldn't say it was dead though.

Posted by matt_a on Jan-22-2003 11:09:

Ok would you rather the way it is here, nice and quiet, underground compared to everything else, or like it is in UK/Holland where every man and his dog goes out to clubs to hear trance. I know which I'd rather have.

Posted by ascension on Jan-22-2003 11:40:

well we'll see who gets the main room(s) at two tribes and then we can decide if trance is dead in australia...

my bet is that armin, judge jules etc will have the main room..

Posted by jc on Jan-22-2003 13:28:

to be honest.. id rather it stay this way
makes it more of a treat when we get internationals and events and also the fact trance doesnt hit the charts (like it does in Holland and other european places)

Yep, I bet heaps of ppl would complain if it was really popular and it was played on the radio all the time.

Posted by AussieTrance on Jan-22-2003 22:20:

I dont mind Trance been "underground", but I cant stand people reffering to trance as DJ Sammy or some cheap techno song
Lots of un-educated fools

Posted by Joshva on Jan-22-2003 22:21:

That is a load of rubbish. Trance is just starting to take off again:

Surge@Eden has been packed pretty much every time
Altitude@Dendy also gets a good reception
Transmission will definately sell out.
Two Tribes will get big numbers
PVD@Home will sell out

Trance dead? What are you talking about??

Posted by basshound on Jan-22-2003 23:18:

lots and lots of uneducated fools in Aust.

Australia has a big quiet base of trance lovers..
Trance gets a good reception at raves up here.. but is still underground, Bris mostly breaks, house, or hardhouse..

but this year we have a monthly Trance nite put on by the ozSessions crew.

BRING ON DA TRANCE

Summed it up PERFECTLY

I wouldn't say it's dead at all, it's continuing to grow and evolve.

There is a new weekly event happening called "Rocket" at Icebox, I'm told harder uplifting trance is played there, and that's what it says on the flyer too. It's a welcome change to the the emotionless hard trance of Sublime and Plastic.

I was at Plastic last Friday and I was glad that DJ Nervous played an uplifting trance set. The rest of the night was hard trance and hard house though.

Posted by Lanithium on Jan-28-2003 09:24:

trance is perth is thriving..

we have rise pumping out the latest and greatest 4 nights a week!

Depends what you define as dead.

IMO:

If it were dead as you claim it to be we wouldnt have trance giants like Paul or even Armin visiting our shores.

If it were dead we wouldnt have large festivals going interstate promoting various contemporary sub-genres of trance.

If it were dead we wont have monthly nights in Sydney including that of trance.lucid and Rocket catering for a niche uplifting trance market

If it were dead Sydney's own super club Home would move on from their notoriously hard trance sound to other terrain on Friday nights

If it were dead we wouldnt have vibrant communities such as (TA)this and members of ITM dedicated week in week out to the music that drives them most and sends their emotions soaring

And finally, if were dead we would have prestigious super clubs like Gatecrasher & Gods constantly visiting our shores eager to promoter their own brand of indivdualistic superclubbing.

Trance dead?

I think ppl mean has it stopped "progressing" as a musical genre not is it still played in australia.

is it a dead horse being flogged? i think it is.

Posted by :CrasHeR-kiD: on Jan-28-2003 15:55:

Of course its progressing - if it wasnt it wouldnt encounter such a success at events.

Transmission for example is progressing - from an event that has just local acts its 'progressed' to deliver punters well grounded intenationals.

Its been the most consistent IMO out of Sydney's trend whore-ish attitude amongst clubs.

Hello!

Transmission
???

Is thats techno??? or hard trance... what we talking about here is PURE trance.. like back in Europe...

where the scene is dominated by trance.. but then again.. having a small following does make it more 3l33t... and imagine the dickheads that go to those trendy clubs just for the sake of it... starting fights and shit.. we don't really want them in our events...

btw Pvd @ Home?? i though its unconfirmed?

Oh yeah.. and its not like trance is played every WEEK...

it would be nicer to open up a club just for trance.. imagine the quality that will start to drop by... anyone a club owner here ??? wanna make a diff to the scene? we will love you eternally for it. hehehe

but then again.. it will bore as there will be no new ppl rolling in any time soon... since they will have to start geting to know the place.. new strategy.. trance [all genres and techno].. that way more funds to keep the place going.. and advertising... boardwalk chalk? thats cheap.. lol...remmeber PS2 advertising... it got me! HEHEHE

I meant is the music progressing not "club nights". and the awnser is to me imho no. while ferry, pvd & avb etc are good producers they have themselves to blame for the state of trance. Sure their tracks are still good but time to thjink fresh was after 99 not 4 years later.

4x4 patterns & huge breakdowns are a trance trademark absolutley, but
it needs to move on. it needs to find some new structures & sounds if it can. because alot of it is just barbie & ken music Plastic, generic recycled crap.

Posted by OLi_A on Jan-29-2003 02:32:

i like to be different
so underground is cool
someone said something about prog....i mean wtf is up with that
prog is a treatment for insomnia not a drawcard

werd . . . the dark side is calling you . . . . join while you still can it's always 'progressing' and finding new sounds.

I think that if a club decided to play trance exclusively it would fail within 2 months. There is absolutley no way that any club could just play trance. I (and probably lots of other people here) would get sick of hearing it week in and week out, and we are trance addicts. Therefore once every 2 weeks or once a month would be the most. It gives DJs a chance to play totally different sets than what they played 2 weeks or a month ago. There arnt enough good trance tunes around to have a night every week.

I agree with this. People could have made tunes in 2000 and release them today and have them hailed as unbelievable hits which is a sad state of affairs (and imo what Nu NRG sometimes do, they have the very trademark uplifting sound from 2000). Trance may have moved on a little bit, but its basis is still in 99. Trance does need find more unique sounds, but usually when a unique sound is discovered and released, people often shun as being TOO progressive. I remember tiestos essential mix from 2001, people on the music discussion forum were saying that the first half was much too progressive for their tastes, even though it was still trancey. I think its everyone's fault (producers, dj's and listeners) that trance hasnt moved on.

Its really starting to get this way in my opinion too.

Yeaaaaa....No.

I think its up to producers to experiment with these new sounds, breaks, hugely different formats, and make trancey sounding songs which dont fit into the typical trance format of bar bar bar bar breakdown breakdown bar bar bar bar. As long as the music is good people will play it. Who says a slight bit of breaks cant be introduced to a trance set? The set im listening to now (Digweeds Essential Mix from october) is mostly 4/4, but there are 1 or 2 tracks that are breaky. But then again, if tiesto started playing tracks like this im sure that we would all whinge and say that he plays too many different genres and should get back to his roots.

Get back to his 2000 trance sound.

Im not one of those people. I think tiesto and other djs should experiment with new sounds, as long as its good music.

There is my huge :Crasher Kid:esque type post jam packed with my opinions.
