Needle jumping with correct settings!!? :(

Hi guys, I'm new here, hope you are all going well

I have 1200 mk3's with Stanton500AL carts which I'm having a few issues with. Basically say I have a record and im running the needle over the first beat, for a while its ok, but quite often, usually if I drag it over the beat slowly, it will jump a couple of grooves back. Here are my settings:

Tonearm Height 1 (as recommended by stanton manual)
Weight 2.7 (inbetween 2.5 - 3 recommended)
Anti skip 2.7 (same as weight, is this correct??)

Any solutions, I am thinking of increasing the weight but dont want to damage records needlessly if there is something else I have setup wrong. Also the needle seems to wobble quite alot over some beats, is this normal?

PS: The tonearm is configured correctly too, I have double checked it with the white plastic thing that comes with the turntables and its reasonably straight!

oh and I have tried using a soft as touch as possible and it still does it, so I don't think its to do with me hamfisting it hopefully

set your antiskate to 0, it's useless.

what the antiskate does is apply a force on the tonearm pressing it out towards the edge of the record. this is to counteract the force of the tonearm pressing in towards the center, during normal operation when the record is going slowly, i think due to centifugal force or something.

anyway, when you backcue, you now have TWO forces pressing it back toward the outside, and the needle skips outward.

set your antiskip to 0, and it should fix the problem.

also, check it's not just that record, or that deck.

Just more weight on the needle.
It's not that your records will damage that big.

How would I know if it was the TT causing it?

Ok I will try setting antiskate to 0 (what is the point of it in this case?)

Records should be fine, one of the ones it was skipping on was brand new.

Check if it's the turntable by trying it on the other one.

as for the antiskate, i did explain what it's for?

Sorry I meant if its on 0.00 its not being used, so what is the point of having it on the turntable in the first place?

Is it more intended for normal playback where you aren't spinning it backwards?

if it still presists clean your vinyls

see if hte needle is damaged as well


weight is probably the problem tho.. increase it and check your needle capacity

This guy has not even given enough information for anyones "diagnosis" I have seen shit destroyed on over
anxious and amature posts.


- First of all "you have" these wheels what condition? new OK...Used? where did you get em? age, place prev. used, ect..
- Is it Both or one?
- you 100% of all 3 markings that are the "0" indicator(no offense)
- is the lock-nut lever tight on the Height Adjuster??
- Change weight plus or minus a gram, change?
- Does it skip in oddly the same spot?
- is the Tone arm Balanced correctly?
- describe you prev. setup

Answer and I will ask more.... Don't do anything drastic YET!!

3) very tight just checked it and pushed it some more
4) nto sure what you mean here? ive tried increasing it and it fixes it but then again i can still cause it to jump by running the beat backwards slowly on some records (on almost full recommended weight)
5) skips mainly on slow complex beats (the needle shakes)
6) tone arm when on 0 weight is horizontal with tt, which is correct I am told
7) these are my first turntables

thanks for your help, it seems to be better now on 0 skip and 2.7 weight

WELCOME TO DJ'ing!!!
- if you are a beginner, don't be ashamed, tell us, we all started once
- don't use massive weight, start in Middle of rec. range 3 - 4 geeezzz
- lots of records that are stored FLAT and/or shipped in "tight" packages seem to do this. It may be called a b.s. but I have noticed it but its your record handling care that is causing this.

Exactly what John Smith said read his post also: ((Note to J.S.Hey my buddy used the GII-RM styli in the Trackmaster with success, it didn't have a gem on it, but still dug noise outta an old record))

- some records pilot hole dia. is punched to large (inserts in the machine punch are worn or incompetly made) this causes excessive (out of round or T.I.R. if anyone from work is reading)movement on the spindle or "pilot hole" and jumps EVERYTIME if not carefull.
- special care or light actions should be used for different physical properties of records, wait till you get dished ones they are my favorite to play!!
- if you are a beginner take note!!! If you master the special touch to do this then find that the stylus flies off the platter for no reason?, or outta control once pushed into cue, stop right there. you need new stylii. I have a jewellers piece to see my tips
DO NOT PLAY RECORDS WITH OLD WORN STYLII
