American kids killed their mother after watching the Sopranos

I've just seen an article in the newspapers, two american kids killed their mother and chopped her body into pieces because they tried to copy scenes from The Sopranos.

Can anyone enlighten me what the hell is wrong with american kids these days? I mean, here people also watch same TV series, and violent movies in cinemas aren't restricted to kids at all, and still none of those things are happening. And in america it happens every once in a while. I mean, sure people are killing each other, but never because they are trying to imitate tv shows!

Hard to believe that the immitation of a tv series was the only reason for that murder.

Agreed, I think they're just trying to partially deflect responsibility.

It does happen more often in America. I believe it is not a coincidence, though it isn't TV series' fault alone. Blamin "The movies" is like claiming temporary insanity at times ... A very good and well excused way to escape responsibility.

In response to the argument: "It happens more often in the states"

I would like to point out that there are approx 250-300 million people living there, most of our countries don't have quite near that.

Normally the argument is that it happens more often in the states per capita. Of course, many countries to not keep reliable statistics about this sort of thing, and attempts by outside organizations to document them have been relatively unsuccessful, despite the claims of some of those organizations. I am near certain that the source of such crimes is the morally authoritative culture of the United States.

The pathology of the murderer is never one of feeling that murder is a good, or acceptable thing. From this we can see that the scapegoating of media for desensitization of violence and killing is exactly that: scapegoating by a society that would rather find a simple answer to the problem than confront the profound and fundamental social issues wherein lies the source of the problem.

Cheers,

Arbiter

Exclamation

about the question of serial killers per capita, i think your wrong. The population has nothing to do with it because after the US the UK comes in second with the most amount of serial killers, SO... i dont believe the UK is anywhere near in population to a country like russia, or china, or spain, or germany, or brazil, or whatever, and the UK is tiny in comparison to these other countries and it actually is documented that it is the country with the 2nd highest amount of serial killers (for the 20th century). IMO its just the social-upbringing, and culture that causes this 'wack' shit to happen. not a godamn movie, shit, blaming something like that on the sopranos is fucking ridiculous.. my grandma watches that show, does that mean she's going to chop my family up into pieces? ....riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

that is correct.

i skimmed an article on this matter, and remember reading something about the mother being mentally disturbed, she would scream and rage at her kids when they were really little. perhaps also abused them but i can't remember exactly about that.

so as you see the kids were most definitely scarred to certain degrees.

but this thread raises interesting issues regardless...

EDIT:

can you imagine.... carrying with you, for the rest of your life, the burden of having KILLED your MOTHER...and that by cutting off her head...

how horrible. i smell suicide coming - or eventually, at any rate.

I think in America, kids don't really understand anymore what is for real and what is fiction. They are stuck with questions. Also they have to live in a much more violent surroundings. I think that plays a very important role in the upbringing of children.

not only that..its more of a western culture. You cant blame tv shows for these kinda things....in the US(and canada for that matter) both parents are caught up at work..and they leave their little ones at daycares and stuff..so that bond between the child and the parent isnt as strong. Also...kids in the western world live off tv...which is ultimately the parents fault as well. Without mental disability, a child is a direct product of the parents. If the parent did not do a good job raising their kid, then they will get a shitty kid..simple as that. Its like buying a rock and then expecting gold
This is a common trend in the western world only because these facilities(like TV..internet) are a common household item.

AGREED, alot of people here all follow the same trend, you either listen to rap (eminem 50 cent are trendy right now) or nu-metal which they call rock.
its hard to find individualism, media plays too large of a role here..
