intro me to house?

hi all, a mate of mine's opening a bar soon, and i'm thinkin he may want some less dynamic sounds than trance, so i'm looking into getting into some house music. can anybody offer an introduction to the sites/forums i should visit, the labels and artists i should check out and hey, even a few songs to recommend? i wouldn't mind gettin into some breaks too. that'd be hella funky. oh, one more question, does mixing house n breaks differ immensely to mixing trance? hope to get some replies! thanks peeps!

man if you put house music in your bar..you might just called the the "tossed your salad" bar...LOL

Check out stuff by Roger Sanchez, Armand Van Helden, DJ Dan, Junior Vasquez, Miguel Migs.

Mixing house is a lot more fun than mixing trance since you can let your mixes go a lot longer. Throw in some samples, acapellas, and effects to make things more interesting.

Good luck!

Hey mate, you might wanna check out www.deephousenetwork.com . Its pretty much the dominant house site on the net. Seeing you're in Melbourne as well, there's a little alley down the side of the Bourke St Sanity in the city, walk down there and you'll see Rhythm & Soul, which is a cd/vinyl store specializing in house and a lil prog. Go in and have a chat to the dudes in there, they're all cool ppl and will help ya out.

Ciao
Pointy

unfortunately i'm not as witty as i used to be, well, if i used to be at all, but yea... i don't get it.

anyhow, dark_tenshi, yea, house does seem a lot more fun to mix. i find trance is a little more conformed, where with such a genre as house, you can unleash ur creativity a bit more.

pointy, hehe, i actually walked into rhythm n soul one time hopin to find some trance there, but walked right out a few minutes later. i'll be sure to check the joint out again though.

appreciate the recommendations. be sure to check em out.
keep em comin! thanks!

Yeah, right...
Learn genres before you post.

I second that, the man's a genius. He used to post occasionally on the now defunct (or should that be de-funked?) Promos4DJs forum, and his bird did too. Top bloke, didn't care that like 80+ of his tunes were being hosted there, in fact he seemed quite flattered. But yeah, his stuff has some serious energy, tough funky stuff, perfect for those sweaty dancefloor moments.

I'd reccomend you some tracks (I have like 2gb of house music on the hard-drive of my other computer - which is now missing half its parts ) but the highlights (i.e. the ones I can remember) included:

Sandy Rivera - Changes
Milo - Jungle of Mirror (really addictive vocal)
Colours - The Guitar Track (Silicone Soul Remix)
Masters At Work feat India - Backfired (as camp as a row of tents, but catchy nontheless)
Lazy Dog feat Ben Watt - Lone Cat (all Ben Watt/Lazy Dog stuff is good, deep laid-back stuff)
Afro Medusa - Dreams
KOT - Changes

And that's about all I can remember sorry. They're all the most recent ones, not too commerical. If you want some other recent stuff with a more sort of tech/prog house feeling then you can search for my posts in the progressive topics here or in the "Teste Ticklers" thread in the Aussie forum.

Or, if you want older stuff, then I can help out with that too.

As for fourms, these are the only two I frequent that may be of some use to you:

http://forums.homeofmusic.com
http://www.global-mindz.com/forums

Anyway, I'm hardly an expert on house music, but that's a start. And I second Pointy's suggestion about Rhythm and Soul - been in there a few times with my DJ mate and it's packed to the rafters with house and progressive music, and the guys who work there really know their shit and are more than happy to pick out a few titles to get you started.

Hope all that helps.

My favorite house song at the moment with the best vocals is In Grid - Tu Es Foutu (You Promised Me)

Junkie XL is progressive. And House != progressive. I spin prog and trance and never house. Just spin prog, forget the house. Hooj tunes, Hook recordings, POD, Blackwatch. There are many good progressive(house/trance) labels. Just find tracklisings from sets by Holden, Digweed, Sasha, Luke flair etc...

That only goes for his newer stuff, though - his old stuff is breaks and trance.

Am I the only one who doesn't like G&D? I don't seem to like any of their stuff.

*wipes tear*
omg dude..you're soooo right. The piano, that smooth male voice, the general mood..OMG, but its almost too chilly to dance to
OMG i just realized how i adapted that supid OMG...omg

anyway, yeah some good recommendations.
I'd add the housier side of Deep Dish (Yoshiesque 1&2 for instance!) also: Harley & Muscle, Danny Tenaglia (why didnt any of you mentiom him??) Roger Sanchez, Robbie River, Terry Lee Brown Junior...and my personal Jazz-House hero, Kevin Yost!

Posted by BTG on Feb-01-2003 06:46:

I dunno if anyone mentioned this

but Danny Tenaglia - Back 2 basics (CD 2) is crazy.

house is just really fresh to me atm. just seems so interesting, much more than prog. a lot more live sounds, and the kinda vocals they collaborate with the sounds, its really chill =) not to take anything away from prog anyhow! thanks for the recommendations guys, goin to take me a while to check em out =)

House music is about lifes good experiences and memories of places and times. Music that makes you feel at home wherever you may be while you are listening or dancing to it, music with soul and drive. Its a vast genre and can different sides and shades to it, kinda like life. Progressive, Tribal, Tech, and some Break influence. House is mainly built on beats and basslines and pseudo melodies, and when done right expressive vocals.

Download my first tune Mekah - JellyFish if you get a chance
A bit of distortion on it, but sweet nasty tune when I get a chance to clean it up a bit.

Yoshitoshi & Shinici are some quality house labels

check out some nice west coast tech house like Terry Francis & H-Foundation (Halo & Hipp-e), stuff like Watermelon records would do you fine

if you're looking for you deep house kinda stuff look out for Miguel Migs, Derrick Carter & Daniel Magg. Some of the best house in recent years has come off the Compost label. Mainly known for their jazzy trip hop, Compost have come out with some awesome deep jazz house lately.

LTJ Bukem has created a jazzy house label as an off shoot from his incredibly succesful drum n bass label, Good Looking Records.

There's also the classic guys like Frankie Knuckles & David Moraes

If you're really keen on getting into house, have a chat with Jah (au.ta), he'll sort you out nicely
