Tutoring for Calculus (not now, but for summer school)

I plan on taking Calculus I (MAT135Y1) in the summer U of T St. George's Campus summer school.

Currently, I'm studying linguistics down there, but I might want to do a double major in Linguistics & Economics.

So, I need the math credit - but I am absolutely shite at math and hapless, for being Chinese.

I took MAT133 in my first year, but had to drop it because I averaged 40%. Now, I want to take MAT135. However, I can guarantee you I need a tutor. Seeing the number of people who are math/engineering/compsci students here, I figured someone would be interested in tutoring me.

I'm looking at something like $15-20 an hour. I'm paying my linguistics tutor at U of T (a grad student) $15/hr, so I guess that is the rate at which people will tutor you for.

If anyone is *seriously* interested in tutoring me this summer, please reply or PM me.

Thanks in advance,
Art

heh sorry man , just funny ..

and i'm sure u can find someone off here, with the vast number of people among TOTA involved in "higher learning" ..

and hey i'm no math genius either !

lol

It's funny, well, at least, we think it is, because we've probably encountered people stereotyping us (including Chinese people generalising, may they be distant relatives or family friends), saying that we're math geniuses.

That's way too typical, and I really don't care for being PC myself (though I do try to take into consideration others may be).

I'm definitely more of a languages person.

Regards

Wow, I must say that you are getting a hell of a deal on your current tutor. If you get a tutor for 15-20$/h I'll applaud you again, because the going rate (for my area) for math tutors (highschool level) is ~25-40$/h, most prolly 30$.

BTW, why don't you get a tutor on campus, there are dozens ads all over SS building for grad. tutors.

Hmmm...mat135 you say? I thought 135 was the "easier" version!! mat137 is hell, believe you me.

You're more of a linguistics person eh? Have you taken JUP250? Or planning on taking it / considered it? Awesome, awesome course, I highly recommend it. Right now at the second half we're doing a lot of linguistics.

You might ask, "Why would I take a cognitive science / A.I. course if I'm in linguistics?"

Well my answer is because linguistics is one subdomain of cognitive science! This course will definitely put things in perspective for you, as far as linguistics and cog.sci. is concerned.

(As for your tutoring problem, sorry, can't help ya...)

Calculus isn't that bad, well looking back on it that is lol
Its one of those subjects you seem to understand after you've taken it, but not while you're taking it, if that makes any sense haha. I'm in Engineering so I've been through a whole shit load of Calculus courses including Vector Calculus *nightmares* lol

I personally would love to help you out, but I just don't have time to tutor someone at the moment, sorry

hope ya find someone though, and best of luck with the course

Actually I was enrolled in that course, until I had to drop it as I needed to fit Mandarin and Italian into my schedule. I plan on taking that next year!

LOL.. i know some artsci's down at St.George taking those calc courses.. i believe the names of the courses differ by an "!".. one is called Calculus! and the other is called Calculus. I guess whichever one is more difficult deserves the "!"

Anyway, I could tutor you for whatever amount/hr.. I'm taking comp eng at St. George and did well in all Calc courses.. also do a lot of tutoring for high school students..

but think twice about it.. I just find it strange to be possibly partying with someone that you pay for tutoring.. it's like partying with your profs.. *shudders*

don't worry

I'm a total nerd, so you won't feel that you are partying with me

I don't party, hehe

So I've got a lead with someone else, and also you - after comparing availabilities and costs, I'll get back to you guys with my decision. I'm not getting started till mid-April.

Thanks for all the replies!
