compressor?

whats the difference between software compressor and hardware compressor?

why do people buy rack mount hardware compressors if software is available? and what exactly would it give to a recording?

You gotta remember that decent software has only been available for the last few years, so hardware is still very widely used (especially by traditionalists).

Also, the top of the line hardware compressors may sound better than any software compressor available. I don't know on that front, but it's likely.

plus some people don't use their pc's that much in their setup. I for one would prefer a separate compressor.

If you have only software you don't need a hardware compressor. If you have some synths running in your setup you will need one. Consider buying a digital mixing console.. Promix 01 is cheap s/h now and has 2 effect processors and 3 compressors on board and full automation. Fine piece of equipement You will spend more money buying a new analog desk with 2 effect boxes and 3 hw compressors

Yes, you can't get the warmth of a Valve compressor with software.

Exactly. There is a very different sound created through the use of a vaccuum tube compressor that is just not recreatable in a software application.

Of course, you're going to be looking at $600 CND for the low end tube compressors.
