do you bring your own slip mats to the club?

The other night I arrived on the job at the club and had one hell of a time working with their 1200s because the slip mats were so slippery: when making fine adjustments with my fingers on the record, it would slide and float all over the place quite excessively.

Do you guys bring your own slip mats to the club, or would that look like an insult to the resident when removing his mats with your own?
I've never had this problem in years and was blown away by how difficult some tables are to work with due to slip mats that are too slippery.
I find that having slip mats that are too slippery (slide easily) will allow the record to float around, giving the impression of what a low-torque turntable would do.
(I prefer to have a nice fluid sliding action on the record for cueing, but I also want the torque of the turntable to quickly bring the record up to speed instantly after releasing the record for accurate cueing.)

Any opinions, suggestions, or stories would be appreciated.

That's why I use the pitch slider for most adjustments. If I have to touch it it's on the pin or right near it. Never the outside of the record. You're just asking for a skip or slide.

man i wish decks had pitch benders so you could keep your main pitch constant once you get it matched, and then instead of nudging the actual vinyl, use the pitch bender.

i would bring my own slipmats tho, just because your used to them i geuess.

there ARE decks that have a pitch bend function my friend has a pair

but you don't need it anywas, I don't have a pitch bend function neither on my tts nor my cd decks and I manage just fine

back to the topic now, IMO it's a good idea to take your slipmats, phones etc where ever you go

yes, there are 4 things you should bring with you to every gig
your records
your headphones
your needles
and your slipmats

i usually have a few other various audio things in my bag as well, just in case
like a couple of y-splitters and various converters to and from various connections (XLR, RCA, TRS)

because for some gigs, you never know what to expect, especially if the equipment is rented (like at a rave)

Good call on that stuff, i usually bring an assortment of goodies in the bag, but was always left my slipmats in the bag for some reason.

Would anyone ever consider putting the wax-paper underneath the slip mats in a club?
In all the clubs i have spun at, i've never seen the wax paper sheet used underneath the slip mats.
I personally use it all the time when working in the studio, but wonder now if that is a bad thing if the clubs never seem to use it.

(It kind of sucks having nice equipment at home in the studio, when most of the clubs' setups are more ghetto and beat up.... it defeats the purpose at times.)

I personally don't thnk you need pitch benders because you will be able to do it with the pitch no problem after a little practice.

I Think you should take everything that will make you feel comftorable to the club so everything will be perfect ;D

i've been playing for a year, give or take
i've just had a lot of experience, not just with djing, but with promoting as well
and some times those little doohickeys in my bag have saved the day

like the right output on a mixer goes..
just take a y-splitter to the left output and there you go
it won't be the best, but better than only one side of the system working

and i've had friends show up for a gig at a club and there wasn't any needles or slipmats

clubs don't want to spend unnessary(sp?) cash on things that could be brought along with the dj
just sometimes they forget to tell the dj that they have to bring their own stuff

I would never bring my own slips. Records and headphone thats it.

the pros do it... ferry put down some tsunami slipmats at glow in washington...

some don't, some do
it's usually those that have been burnt that do take their slipmats

personally, i'd rather play on my own mats instead of some other mats that i have no clue where they've been or what could be on them

especially when it comes down to rented equipment you'd see at a rave


usually there are needles and mats there for you, but it's better to be safe than sorry

that is quite interesting and i think it is safe to say we can bring our own slip mats.
What is everyone's opinion on using the wax-paper sheet that comes with the turntables..... i use it all the time because i seems to work well... but i have never seen it used in any clubs.

any comments/suggestions on using this in the studio, as well as in the club??

the wax paper issue comes down to a matter of personal preference
if your mats are slippy enough, no need

esdjco makes some nice slipmats that are grippy on the record side and have a nice slippery felt side on the bottom
no need for wax paper with those bad boys

i have pitch bend on my ttz..
one thing about it: it sux! they just bend wayyy to much! just use the pitchslider to pitch it up a little bit, it works much better!
