The State Of The Scene in Vancouver
Well,,, this is the first time I've been on-line for awhile now,,, and after reading through ALL of the local 'electronic/rave' based message boards and looking at the line-ups for upcoming parties,,, I must that I am very sad. I don't know if I can explain how I'm feeling right now,,, but I will try my best. First off,,, let me start by saying that I am deeply upset with the state of the scene in Vancouver at present,,, especially the trance scene. I know that Armin Van Buuren and Paul Van Dyk will be coming in April and Ferry Corsten soon after,,, and this is Huge,,, although I can't help but wish that these events would be held at the Comodore or the Rage and go until at least 4am. The PvD show has massive potential,,, and I hope it goes through. Other than that,,, I just don't understand the direction promoters are taking with thier choice of DJ's that they are booking,,, and by this I mean headliners AND locals. Now,,, I would like to say that there are some promoters that are really putting on quality shows such as PH-1,,, who IMO have braught the most consitant level of talent through out last year. And it's good to see that Phu and his friends are starting up some new nights as well. Yet still I still see DJ's who have been playing far longer than myself that don't get any opportunities to play out. I also see a lot of ass kissing and people begging thier way into getting booked for shows,,, and as a result it seems that everyone has become so bitter and that they only think about themselves. One of the major problems seems to be that everyone knows everyone. By this I mean unless you're friends with the promoter of the show... YOU ARE NOT GETTING BOOKED. PERIOD. Now I don't know why this still bothers me when I'm all the way in China... but it does. So unless you have your own club night or throw your own show show and can arrange some sort of cross booking.... you will NOT be getting booked either. What can we do about all of this? This is something that I have been asking myself for months,,, I wish I knew. And believe me,,, I've been trying my hardest to give people the chance to play at my night who I think deserve it most. All I have,,, is a club night in Richmond that most people in our city don't even know about. Still,,, the night is at capacity every week and my DJ's play kick ass tunes EVERY week,,, and I'm really proud of everyone who is a part of my team. But I really belive we need to start to some big things in for 2003. As much as I'd like to get things rocking,,, while trying to get my own DJ'ing career it's going to be very difficult,,, especially all the way from China. So,, I believe that we really need to work together as a team. I think there are enough people on this board which share the same passion for trance and good electronic muisc as myself that I believe we can make things better in Vancouver. Seriously,,, lets show people what real trance is,,, I know between us we have the vinyl and knowledge to do it. Let's put aside our diffrences and personal agendas and do this together.
How you ask? Hehehh. Well,,, My first idea would be a TA stage at Apex Project this year. And I'm not talking about a little popcorn fart stage,,, I mean a real stage with a kick ass headliner. I'd even like to try and get some members from other provinces in on it if possible. What do you guys think about this? I know it's a long ways away,,, it's just something that I think could work. Either way,,, let me know what you think.
I look forward to hearing any other ideas you guys might have,,, and if you took the time to read my whole post,,, thank you very much

I agree a 100%. Very good points. The only way to make trance bigger is more club nights and club events. I have always wanted to bring in a DJ and have a club night. But I lack having 15000 dollars laying around. But I would love to be a part of a team who would bring in somebody. I would definately like to be apart of your apex plan.
for example...
montreal----
3 clubs (aria, sona, stereo), all with 1500 capacity, all catering to afterhours nightlife, with massive sound, lighting etc..and all open till 10 am....and massive 8,000 ppl parties, with trance!!! house!! and prog....
cost to see avb at aria(4 hr set) = $25
toronto-----
same as montreal really. massive trance following
cost to see avb at the guvernment/kool haus (5 hr set) = $20
vancouver----
biggest club 1000 capacity....
every club closes at 2:00 am.......heck in montreal, some big clubs don't open till 2 am. every club plays house music and hip-hop on weekends....djs can only play 4 hours sets max........an 8 hour sander k set is impossible
cost to see avb at twisted rave (2 hr set) = $50
the problem in vancouver is solely the fact that afterhours are illegal. The rage for instance, is a perfect venues for a big room afterhours club that could open from 10-8 every weekend.....yet the vancouver city council is fuked up major. The only way we can see good events is to pay $30 for a 2 hour set at the commodore, or $50 to go to a massive plaza rave and hangout with fukked up kidz all night.
however, vancouver has lots of small fun wicked nights....automatic, sonar, vivid, and other special events...the only thing missing is a solid place where 1000 people can get togther and dance all night legally, at an affordable price : )...
and there are some decent new crews throwing jams...exert/reds valentines bash with roy davis jr is gonna be slamming : )..and i belive it goes till 6-7 am : ) and it's 19+.
anywho...boooo-urns to city council..

some crazy points there guys
im not too knowledgeable in the scene but from a lay person's point of view i can tell you what we are really lacking: promotion of the scene
if it wasnt for these forums, i wouldve never known of any trance night in van. i only hear of raves outside of this place. i dont think it really matters on where a trance/prog/whatever night is held, as long as ppl are aware of it. only very few who are really into the scene know of parties and nights that are happening in the city. those who have never been exposed to this stuff wouldnt start looking all of a sudden cause they dont know what its like, see what im getting at?
i havent been listening to velocity on xfm lately, but i think it could be a good way of letting ppl know about whats going on in the city, where a good dj is playing. that is if they dont have something similar already
its all about educating the public
great idea on the apex stage danny
i'd be more than happy to help in any way
Thanks Apri_peel and Jesten =)
I'll make a post for a TA Stage @ Apex this year after I find out the dtails and costs from Azim.
danny!!!!
hehe lemmie know if you need any help with any of your upcoming projects... (and please save a slot for me too... *LOL* ) ... ugh.. on a totally unrelated topic, go on msn sometime, i have soooo much bs to tell you......
Thats a pretty sweet idea. It might take fund raising or something of the sort though. I'll help with whatever I'm allowed to do. And this semester I have loads of free time.
Fundraising nah man thats one thing i would never do. Just Watch what 385 evolution will be doing in the near future. If u Dj's out there who have been in the room mixing, drop me some mixes and i'll get u a gig in the future. I mean ask Danny he'll hook u guys up too trust me.
Hey Danny, heard a lot about you from G-Money. I think this is something 385 Evolution will try to do in the near future. Hope you come back from China and we can start something. The TA stage sounds like a plan so far but we need a club like the clubs in TO and Montreal....people who appreciate all the music by DJs......too bad you won't be here for our club night but I am sure you are having a blast in China......check out the scene in China then bring some ideas back......PEACE OUT!!
G-Money, I think we need to talk or meet up....call me..
I'd love to come over every time there is a trance event in Van but the fucking ferry's are so damn expensive and I work full time. I could always do a walk on but then i'd have to catch a bus and I have no idea of roots.
Sucks living on the "rock" in some asspects but this really sucks because i'd love to be there supporting the scene in Van
if you guys want help booking a big headliner..talk to Peter(serotonin) some of you know him..hes got Scot Project this weekend and is opening alot of doors for himself.
if you get the stage, talk about it and we will come help.
Peter is my friend,,, although he'll probably be playing with f&K at this show. Keep in touch though and maybe some other dj's from Calgary might like to play.
peace.
apri_peel is right...the public has no idea of things going on in Van. I'm constantly finding shows that my friends have no idea are going on, but only because I search for them in Newspapers and on here. I was in Montreal last summer and the streets are literally plastered with flyers when a big name dj comes to town, when it's as easy as walking down a street to find out about a show you would think that a lot more tickets are probably going to be sold.
A lot of people are put off by the stigma associated with electronic music-shit, if I didn't love it I don't know if I'd put up with the people you find at raves as much as I do. We do need more club nites that are exclusively trance/progressive, but perhaps promoting the few that exist now should precedent.
^^^ Exactly.
Our flyer should be done real soon

I have to agree I have been partying in Vancouver for along time I have put on 6 shows, Has for dj getting booked I booked the dj that I like to hear. So many good dj in Vancouver,
Sid....
holly shit !
does the scene suck in this place or what !
seriously people !
I always say that this is the beautiful place to live in if you are retired !
this is the city for grandpas and grandmas... no offense or anything but it is so !
night life for young peeps is at the bare minimum
I dont know if it will ever hit the level at which eastern canada is at or posssibly Europe...
Until some major reforms from the political poing of view are done regarding partying and nightlife this is gonna be "old town"
I give props and congratulate these people (the whole TA crew ) who love this music so much as I do and they are trying to make a difference and make things better... if it wasnt for them we would still be banging our heads against the wall while listening to top 40 and similar "party music"
If it wasnt for this darn school I would be out every time supporting and getting involved in the trance scene in any way I can ! I realy would cause I love it !
but UBC is tying me down hard... load is getting heavier every week
too much stuff to do and too little time
pisses me off but what can I do its important and its a priority !
oh ya and the apex idea would be excellent !
could that be possible to happen !?
It would be perfect and I would like to help in any way I can! Anything... And can I spin too (shamlessly asking) heheh
Also more promotions and radio stations playing our stuff ... Velocity is not enough.... its only once a week in the evening and in the time most people are out partying...
you know how they opened that "the beat" thing radio station recently ? Well thats exactly what needs to be done for electronic music !
enough of my rambling
I know you all know whats the situation
and the sooner we pull the efforts together and join the better for all of us and the community
peace out
Yeah, after looking at the lineup for Aria in Montreal I got depressed about how badly Vancouver sucks. Hopefully the new laws help matter, but until then, not a heck of a lot one can do.
What is the price range in bringing in big name djs such as Tiesto for a club night? Maybe a 2 hours set......
Maybe this is just what Vancouver needs - some big name djs to keep the scene growing...no doubt Twisted is doing a good job but a lot people prefer clubs than a rave IMO...and whats up with the bylaw about clubs closing at 4:00am?? Shouldn't it be in effect now??
10 grand US for the likes of Tiesto, AvB, PVD on weekends. If anyone feels like lending me the money, I'll throw a wicked clubnight that may or may not break even =)
aria in montreal can bring in huge names beacuse
1-capacity of 1500-2000..and its always pretty rammed...
2-cover $20
3-club open from 2-10...
the thing is, spending $20-$30 to go to a club for 8 hours makes sense...especially when you can't buy alcohol and there are a tonne of gourgeous women : )....plus wicked sound and lighting...
spending $20 to go out in vancouvers small clubs for 3 hours doesn't.....
without legalizing afterhours, its never going to happen....other then "concert" type events at the commdore, or 16+/$50 plaza raves.
you can't make $$ or even break even with big names in vancouvers small clubs
and ray ray, pvd is likely 10-15,000 for a weekend booking....no matter how long his set is......he'll likely play for 5 hours in mtl next month..
