How fucked are we????

As a species we are pretty shafted arent we???
Just take the example of us lot on these boards - we flame the fuck out of each other all the time and we are meant to have the same interests.

So now consider the rest of the world - no chance of getting any peaceful solutions ever.

We invented Politics to attempt peaceful solutions but this hasnt worked - consider the quote from Klauschwitz "war is a contiuation of politics by other means"

And I think that Terminator 2 summed our species up perfectly. When John Connor says, "We arent gonna make it........ are we..........people I mean". The Terminator then replies, "Its in you're nature to destroy yourselves"

what do you reckon.......... are we gonna make it??????

Peace will eventually be established... Have you heard of the Baha'i Faith? http://www.bahai.org

Posted by Prototrance on Feb-06-2003 01:10:

No I havent heard of it. Is it religious??? If it is then I'm not interested. Religion causes more problems than it solves. Its just another way a differentiating between cultures - which leads to conflict.

there are different ways to look at religion. it can be very inspiring. the ba'hai faith is interesting but in my opinion it doesnt bring much to the table.. they do good things in the community though. i wouldnt "check out" individual religions, just read and talk to people.

Religion isn't what causes the problems. It's humans themselves...

Just a way to differentiate cultures? That's not what it's ever originally meant to be. I recommend you read up on it, no pressure though.

If you've only looked at the surface of it, you haven't found everything it's come to say. What has it brought (or not brought) to the table in your opinion?

Posted by Prototrance on Feb-06-2003 01:30:

Well I have degree in Philosophy - which focuses heavily on religious aspects of society and religions involvement in the development and interection of society - So I would say I have more than "looked at the surface of it".

From my readings it just seemed to cause more problems - but then again I am an Aetheist (spelt right??) So I am biased against religion anyway.

I just wish the world could pull together.

Just look at what humans have done to the earth. We've greatly polluted it. The world would be much better off had humans never walked on it.

Anyway, I don't think there will ever be world peace. I mean, I can hope all I want but I know that theres just too many people with too many different views on things and they just can't get along. There has been war in some place in the world pretty much at all times since the beginning of humanity. The most we can hope for as a human is that we will fix the damage we have done to the earth, find ways to not pollute, get rid of nuclear weapons (like this would ever happen), and minimize war. If these things aren't done, the human race will eventually destroy itself or the earth.

True words. I also do a lot of reading and research on sustainable development. This is essentially about the environment, economics, politics. And within this conhesive decisions cant be made because of human arguments. Look at last years World Summit. It was on the subject of (amounst others) world development and it descended into a discussion on 'shall we bomb Iraq??'

You stated that you hadn't heard of it before. Therefore, glancing at a website (which no matter how properly set-up, isn't the greatest source of info from something) doesn't give you a good look at what it is. I'm just saying...

Degree in philosophy or not, you have to investigate to know for sure.

everything on earth is pre programmed to become dominant. flame wars are not really about hating the other person, it is actually you trying to impose your thoughts on someone else. if u notice the flame wars, if they go on between to idiots .. they go on for pages because none of them are intelligent to beat the other person. now take for example Arbiter, his flames are ussually 2 responses because he backs up all his statements and uses obscure references. he instills doubt in the mind of the person hes flamming. arbiter may not be right, but he dominates the conversation and causes the other person to concede.

everyone thrives to be the alpha person in their own circle. i.e. in a group of ten little star wars geeks, there is that once person who the other 9 look up too, the jedi master of star wars knowlege and memorabilia. now he may dominate that cirlce, but he wouldnt be able come into my circle and dominate because i dont give a fuck about how many action figures he collected. so he goes back to his circle and is happy to be the alpha star wars geek. some people need to dominate a couple circles, and these are the people who grow up to be managers, police officers, people who need to be answered to, but still need to report to someone else and are a dime a dozen. the people that have to dominate most circles, grow up to be CEO's and higher up government officials, Presidents and shit like that. People that need to dominate every circle grow up to be mass murderers.

What freaks me out is that all movies that portray the future always show one thing..DESTRUCTION.

This can be seen in alot of movies like "Time Machine", Humans are going to destroy themselves.

Thats what Nostradamis said too, he said something like "Humans will destroy the earth"

Its scary.

I think being a human kicks ass. I just think that we should be more concerned about each other as living beings and not as "Americans", "Brazilians", "Europeans" etc... But I think we wiil someday live in peace. Not before we almost destroy ourselves.
Ill try to give an example of what I think.
Lets suppose the earth is a person that takes heavy drugs. This person at the beggining takes the drug seldomly, but then starts to take more and more untill she finds herself extremely fucked up, sick etc and she realizes she will die if she keeps on taking drugs. So she treats herself.
My point is, we will reach the bottom of the hole we're falling before we take action. (IMO)

A good point - and one I totally agree with and forgot to mention:-

That humans are not prepared to do anything about a situation until its in their face. e.g - "In 50 years we will run out of non-renwable sources of energy". The typical human response will be "50 years??? thats ages - we will cross that bridge when we come to it". What we dont realise is that investments need to be taken in the earth now so that they have a beneficial effect in 50 years.

Posted by XxremedyxX on Feb-06-2003 19:59:

What is really gay about the whole situation is the conflict that is going on between Iraq and the US right now. Every country produces these nuclear and biochemical weapons, but for what? Why produce these great masses of weapons of mass destruction when it takes a dozen or less to blow the whole damn earth up.

See the US hasn't attacked Iraq yet because no country has been in great war in awhile. All this modern technology and weapons scares them. The US could blow Iraq off the map if they wanted to i'm pretty sure but why haven't they done it yet? Because of the oil thats why. Also why won't Iraq just give and disarm their damn country..... they are trying to be a tough third world country and it's not working. North Korea kind of scares me though. You never know what those asians are going to pull out. They might have small dicks but they got some pretty big balls to be dropping out of that contract and re-open their nuclear facilities.

I say there won't be peace for awhile but i do fear what could happen if we go to war with those damn weapons of mass destruction. Why can't we just have the little rifles with the little bayonets at the end like old times? Can't blow up a country with those... DAMN ALBERT EINTSTEIN AND HIS ATOMIC BOMB!!!! DAMN HIM!!!
