"City of God"- you MUST see this movie!!!!!
I saw this movie last nite at the Cumberland theatre, and was totally blown away by it. It's from Brazil, and has subtitles, but that should not stop you from seeing this film. It's really violent, but it has many funny moments too. Also, keep in mind that this is based on a person's life story, and that most of the 'actors' are real street kids asked to be in the movie.

I would SO see this movie again!
Desidel/tatgirl, if you organise movie-night-out over reading week, I'll be there.

Sorry, I'm American- when is reading week?
If it's too far off, this movie may not be playing then. No idea how long it'll be around, since it's one of those independant flicks, but I hope it's around for a long time.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
hehe it is a brazilian film, that was filmed in Rio De Janeiro, i have been to the favala that they show in the movie, it is amazing, and the movie is pretty true to the life there, i have not seen it yet, but i for sure will soon.
Also the real name to the movie is
cidade do deus
Also i just watched the preview and it is true, the amount of guns there, damn it is crazy country. The favalas are very interesting thing, they are all controled by drug lords, but they are safer then the cities as the cops are corrupted hehe. The joke is that it is safer in the favalas then it is in the city. God last year they had a shoot out in downtown. But do not get my wrong, i would go back there in a heart beat, hehe sorry to go off topic just i love brazil.
Yeah, go see this movie, and you'll never complain about those "gun-toting Americans" ever again. American's have NOTHING on the people portrayed in this movie!!!! Total freaking warzone!!!!!!!
i wonder if Marco V did the soundtrack .. ? "do you believe in a .. "
Reading week is Feb 15 to Feb 22. How is that for you?

don't worry tatgirl, you'll ALWAYS be the "gun toting americans." Any country that has more (non military owned) guns then people is totally fucked beyond belief. Don't tell the NRA that though, they wouldn't want you to not be allowed to hunt deer with fully automatic assault rifles. It's a RIGHT after all isn't it?

my reading week is during the last week of FEb..
so Scott Bond will kick it off for me .. then i wouldn't mind catching a flick with you fine folks during the week a bit later..
cheers ..
My reading break is 14th to 24
I saw a documentary on the making of this movie a while ago and it's always looked pretty damn good to me. I'd go see it any day. It's rather unfortunate, but the presence of all the drugs, violence, and whatnot is just pretty much a fact of life in certain parts of Brazil. Luckily, I never had to deal with any of it regardless of where in Brazil I was living. As Tudo Beleza said: "Rio De Janeiro is not a war zone, you just have to know how to live".

Saw this movie tonight at Canada Sqaure, and it was really interesting, and many times disturbing. Seeing how violence is so common and even how a child can be so brutal.
I was kinda worried the subtitles would interfere and make the movie hard to understand, but wasn't too hard to pick things up.

So, who's up for a movie night? and when?

yeah i saw the movie saturday with my ffriend from hk, and he loved it which is good as i am bias hehe i love brazil so i thought it was great. Though they translated sometimes incorrectly, like the swear words and stuff, but it is a awesome film. Though we must remember not all of rio is like that, and not the favals are all like that either it is a movie.
But i love how it cuts to the past and then the ending was great, and the credits were they showed actual footage.
But damn the girl, hehe that is why i like brazilian women.
See it everyone,
I want to see the spanish movie next.
