Lightbulb ip tracing???

Ok....so i have this program called Anti Trojan Sheild.....
so i wanted to update it....once i did that...i got a messege say that the version i have is cracked....and that my IP is logged and they will prosecute me unless i buy it....

i'm on my university ethernet connection.... can they trace the ip to me....???

yes:

http://visualroute.visualware.com/

type in your ip and look what comes up.. sorry to say with a static IP you are f00ked in that case

Not if your behind a NAT firewall which you probably are. NAT will represent all IP's in a private network as a public IP. So they could trace it up to the firewall but no further.

TRACING A PROXY SERVER

Yes they can trace you , if you are connected to an internal network , then that network will have fixed I.P address assigned to each computer, now your computer at uni or wherever is connected to a main server or maybe a few, then that server is connected to the ISP. Ok now , if you go onto the internet and check your i.p address with a java program or whatever lets say your i.p has appeared as 161.5.200.16 in MIE , now run WINIPCFG and check your Host I.P address , I can gurantee that it will be a 100% match. Now how does the company trace you down , there TRACERT The ISP to LOOKUP the HOSTNAME of your IP , NOT your IP ADRESS so it will be something like this, (usafw1.ge.YOURUNI.com) NOW your Network check there logs and then report it to your Admin guys , then they do an internal lookup for the I.P 161.5.200.16 and volla.

thats what microsoft told me about my version of XP and I live 3 minutes away from their corporate HQ. They didnt do shit, no one ever does. Dont worry about it.

Scare tacics... wahoo

i imagine they will start to track people down and charge them eventually for this. microsoft especially i am sure will take advantage of this feature.

as for the firewall thing, yes, you are safe, because they can only identify the firewall IP, UNLESS they subpoeana your university to give them the logs, and even then only IF your network keeps those kind of logs, AND if you had to personally login to that computer. otherwise there is no way they can tell it was you.

at home though.. your fucked. that's one reason why dialup was so cool, dynamic ip!

there are ways around this though, you can surf through proxys located on the net.

Almost right...

Most large networks work with a pool of IP addresses that are dynamically addressed to computers (by the DHCP server) as they log on.
Your computer gets an IP address for a set amount of time (called a 'lease') and then that IP gets put back into the pool to be used again after the lease time expires.

Some large networks have real IP addresses (but that's expensive) so most have there own internal network to support a large number of clients (like a university).
Like Rozzer said, most of the time they'll only be able to TRACERT to your uni's firewall since your IP address isn't a 'real' IP to the rest of the world.
Then it will be up to your local network admins to go through their logs to find out who had that IP address at that time...

i have more things to worry about! but thx for the support.....

most universities (i.e. mine) distribute their pool of ip's statically for the year. Even if not, if the college is approached by a company with the claim that a person within their firewall is abusing their ip, the college may be forced to show logs of the assined ips -> lead to you.

of course, your college may not log which MAC address gets which ip..

there are a ton of variables. but it is not completely unlike that someone can find out where you live provided with an ip.

They statically assign there? Damn...
I'd hate to administrate that!
