CD drives disappeared!!!!
okay out of nowhere my computer suddenly doesnt recognize that i have two cd-rom drives (one is a normal cd-rom drive and the other is a cd burner). the cd burner opens when i press the button, but the cd-rom doesnt open at all. neither drive shows up when i double click the 'my computer' icon. im running on windows me. can anybody help?
First get rid of windows ME, heh, it really is crap
Secondly open up you cmputer aand check the ide cables in the back of the cd rom drives, they may have come lose. So check them first, otherwise when your computer starts up go into the bios and see if the roms are detected in there, if they are its a problem with windows.
Hope that helps a little
think the cables are out of the drive, because it don't open at all
check if a led turns green or something at power up
aahhhhhh...thanks for the help guys. reading your posts was like taking a nice long leak after holding it for hours.
ill try your suggestions.

It's probably a file system error (your cpu thinks your hdds work in dos mode).
Run your cpu in DOS mode, type 'regedit' and restore an old registry copy that was made before your problem occured, that should help.
I recently had this problem with my HP. If looking at the IDE cable doesn't work, there is a fix on HP's website that deals with it. Basically, what happened to me was one of my programs that utilized the CD Drives (i.e. burning software)re-wrote something in the registry that set upper and lower "limits" on the drives. Basically, it kept Winblows XP from "seeing" the drives, even though they were detected by the bios. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

What the heck ... I have a similar issue as well although slightly different. Basically, I have a cdrw set up as the master, and a dvd drive set up as the slave. Both are set to cable select. When I try that setup the lights flash but xp doesn't detect the drives. But when I use only plug in 1 drive(either one works) it detects that drive fine. Could it be a bad cable? Any suggestions?
