Software for editing/making tunes

Hi everyone

Just wondered what is the best software for making/editing tunes.

I found dance ejay 1 the other day, i remember when i used to think that it was the best thing since sliced bread, however now i find it funny and very primative.

Ive have heard things about 'cool edit' is it any good? And can you edit/make your own tunes with it?
