Talking Glow-worms may die if you don't help me out

Yesterday night, a couple of glow-worms were in my room last night and I decided to keep them as pets. However, I've looked all over the internet and I can't find what they eat (if they need water and stuff). So far, they're glowing (a lot less then yesterday though), but I wonder for how long they'll make it. I put them in an empty aquarium, where I built a mini-forest for them (with lettuce and other vegetables ).

So, what do they eat? What do they need?

These things exist? Do you got a pic of them?

Only thing I can remember about Glow-Worms were that they were dolls (stuffed animals) in the 80's that their faces lit up or something...as a matter of fact, I think I had one LMAO. Wow, OLD SKOOL!

Do you know that insect that glows in the dark? (it's a very cool green light): I'm talking about those... here's a pic of what they look like

edit: I didn't have a better picture, sorry

You've got to free them mate - they arent meant to be kept as pets.

Social interaction with hundreds of other glow worms is essential to their existence. By seperating them from others you are damaging them - thats why they are not glowing as much.

I guess you're right, Prototrance... I thought about it today and I thought they could be like one of those unique pets (like iguanas and stuff), but they don't seem to enjoy their new enviroment, so I'm gonna free them....

*looks at the glow-worms*

Damn, it was like having my very own candy-kid bugs

I'm glad about this - its the best thing for them. Some creatures just arent meant for domestication - you know?

I got a suggesstion though - put some minature glowsticks in a tank and you will think they never left

Posted by Lira on Feb-10-2003 01:54:

Yup, they're gone. Now all i need is to find out where to buy glowsticks

Hmm, only thing we have around here that "glows" is a firefly/lightning bug, and they're out during the summer months. But ours don't look anything like that. I thought you were talking of an animal that took on the actual appearence of a worm.

When I looked up in the dictionary, I found the name quite strange too, but since it's not my native language, who am I to disagree? Must be because my dictionary has the British vocabulary and the name is different in U.S? (the firefly/lightning bug you said)

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what their real name is. Those ones I gave were just the generic names given to them by people.

Aye

there's nothing more beautiful than watching a zillion firefly's roam over a field under moonlight.

edit: take a camera, put the shutter at a slow speed and have a friend dance amid the fireflies and take pictures.

You should've eaten the fireflies man! Then maybe you could start glowing yourself!

j/k you made the right decision.

or you could

1. drink the stuff from the glowsticks

2. get exposed to radiation

that'll make ya glow..

nice work, maaz, those creatures really appreciate what you did for them

Hehe, I like this idea too, but they're now gone There aren't many glow-worms here, so I guess I'll have to edit the pictures on photoshop

rofl... I shouldn't have lost this opportunity

I actually kept them as pets because they were flying around my room while I wanted to sleep, and well, we never know what we can accidentally eat while we're asleep, right?

lol... drinking the stuff from the glowsticks sound like a cool idea (I need some glowsticks though), but radiation sounds risky (maybe something else could happen, like me becoming invisible or something)

*thinks for a while*

It's not a bad idea after all

Yeah... now Ste and Coup (could I have thought of any other names for them? ) can go around glowing freely again

Ps.: I hope ste and coup (the TA's) don't mind

Posted by whiskers on Feb-10-2003 04:13:

lol, ste & coup, muha!

and drinking the stuff from the glowsticks really isn't such a good idea... lol! remember, it's a chemical process, that's why they glow... but i'm sure you know that...

Don't worry, I'm not gonna drink anything that glows unless it's because of the lights in the club Except for that green bar thing that you can chew or put in your drinks, which is really cool Does that thing have a proper name?

mouth glowsticks?

Posted by Lira on Feb-10-2003 04:40:

Might be... it's just because here we just call it "the green little thing that glows in the dark" (a coisinha verde que brilha no escuro)

I think "mouth glowsticks" is a better name
