Hello!

(May 15, 2001) dotmusic.com -- MP3-swapping network Napster, hurrying to transform itself from dreaded renegade into a legitimate legal part of the music business, seems to be nearing launch of its paid-for subscription service.

The company has issued an invitation to users on the front page of its site saying "...Be the first to preview the new membership service. If you're interested in being chosen as a beta tester, provide us with your email address. More information to follow soon." Reports suggest that initial testing of the new system will begin in the next month, with the final fee-paying network launching towards the start of July.

Built in collaboration with German media mogul Bertelsmann (owner of BMG Records, home to Dido and Christina Aguilera), the forthcoming membership service is believed to be Napster's last chance of staying alive. Under fire from the major labels and a potentially long-running court case, the music-trading firm has been forced to install filters which prevent unauthorized tracks from being downloaded. Now even independent bands who want their songs to be traded are finding their music inadvertently filtered out due to a phenomenon Napster calls "overblocking".

Recent research shows that Napster's usership is dwindling: to retain its crown as the Web's most talked-about music application Napster needs to get its paying technology up and running as quickly as possible.

But it's not all smooth sailing; Napster's latest update, designed to mesh with audio fingerprinting software which will recognize songs in order to divvy up royalties between artists and labels, has drawn criticism from hardcore fans. "...I for one am shocked," says one Napster messageboard user, nicknamed 'Napsterpnunk0', "that such a serious, ambitious company would create such a worthless piece of garbage."

hmmm

its so funny how everyone LOVED napster when it was at its peak and now everyone is saying napster sux, and napster is doing this and dat, fuck napster..

i mean i can understand why napster is closing down because the government is a bitch and artists care more about $$$ then the love of the music (backstreet,metallica.. etc etc)

napster opened people like me to WORLDWIDE music, not jus commercialized recycled garbage that gets overplayed in the US.. dutch trance, german techno, UK progressive... jus everything and united the whole trance scene as one

in mah opinion, napster was fucking great and nobody should complain cuz u guys got more then what u wanted from napster

yeah notice how you never saw any of the trance dj's complaining about ppl d/l music, only the greedy rock artists who dont care about what they make anymore, its how much damn money they get out of it. its sad, but they will never stop illegal mp3 downloading. if they do then thats a joke, and a slap in their face. no matter how many programs they shut down, there will always be 10 more waiting in the wings.

Posted by The Greek on May-20-2001 02:07:

lynx napster does that sometimes it might result in nothing one time around and the next a huge list..anyway audiogalaxy is really good i think and ive been using it since the beginning when i still used ftp and i had not even heard of napster..i think we all gotta appreciate all the direct download programs out there cause ftp was a bitch..napster WAS good but napster now suks thats the plain truth

Posted by Linx_da_cat on May-20-2001 03:04:

yeah i know...but i remember clearly that the words paul and remix were filtered...that's the thing.

Unhappy RIP Napster

We all remeber the good ole days b4 metallica decided to be all b*tchy about sharing music ..just comes to show that decrepit old washed out rockers want money from where ever they can what ever happend to performing for the love of the music?...they lost sight of what it is to be an artist and its sad and if anyone thinks napster will be the last im shure thats would be a mistake ..as soon as somfin else becomes big it to will fall

Posted by TrAnCe CoNtRoL on May-20-2001 03:49:

me thinks that what i said ^. but good point though. thats exactly how it is.
