Duct Tape and Plastic Sheets?!? - C'mon Mr. Ridge, enough already!

This scare tactic of "terrorist threat level" is not only becoming monotonous, but downright ridiculous!

Fox News: Latest Terrorist Warning

I can't help but think about the stories I read and heard about during the '50's with McCarthyism and Communism. An Orwellian doctrine of sorts: the more fear a government creates for the common people, the easier it becomes to control them. Give us a common enemy to fear and hate, pump his picture a million times on our TVs, create a threat level scale and occasionally raise the level to high when your poll numbers slip, and tada: you have a nation united, gripped with fear and hate, willing to support your leaders no matter what! So now our Emanuel Goldstein is Hussein, not Bin Laden?!? I'm confused. Oh well, ignorance is strength, right?

How much further is this really going to go? Does anyone else see a pattern here? I'm tired of this propaganda shit all around, and the U.S. is just as responsible. Plastic sheets and duct tape with a 3 day supply of food? Enough already!

MisterOpus1 - i definitely understand your concern and in a way i agree that scare tactics are not the way a government should go about geting higher poll tallies in their favour.
You must understand that its better to warn a nation of a possible threat rather than just leave them out and just hope for the best.

These people can at least get shit stored in case something really does happen, knowledge of a threat is better than ignorance of a threat.

i rather know that the threat level is high and get ready for any possible attack, rather than have an attack hit us out of nowhere and be pissed that the government didn't warn us abuot what they might have known!!

They never raised the threat level to orange just because they neede greater support from within the US... there really have been an excess of chatter in some chats frequented by Muslim extremists.

One of these chats got a message from Aramco Boy portending the al Qaeda attacks in Mombasa three days later.
These are reliable sources... we must be aware of the threat that lies ahead of us and stand together as a country, and as a world to conbat this global terror!

Agreed. I understand this is the duty of our government. However, I tend to hold a certain amount of skepticism on our government run by Bush Co. (if you've read some of my other posts), and that's where you and I will likely disagree. However, I feel it's a healthy skepticism, and I sincerely appreciate to be proven wrong. I'm not a complete wacko on the whole thing; more like somewhere in the middle really on what I believe is true and false.

That's kinda interesting. What's "Aramco Boy"? One thing I'm starting to become more skeptical about is this thing about "terrorist chatter" across the networks. Again, what are the sources? Is it all really too top secret to tell? Has anyone outside of our government seen or experienced any of this "chatter"? I'm very curious for sources on it myself. If you know of any info. sources pertaining to this, let me know.

Posted by melech_mike on Feb-11-2003 18:39:

I myself read on Debka.com a warning of an attack. you could ask debka to send you the warnings they had on the site back in nov.
Aramco Boy is a nickname of someone using one of these chats.

I myself saw the warning of an attack to happen in 'Paradise'!
i highly doubt the coincidence of the paradise hotel being bombed in Kenya 3 days later.
They do not want to release these chats for fear that people will start overflowing them and these key chats will be lost!

You must understand that no country would give out all the intel they had on any issue! Its just very stupid to do so, and could jeopradize a whole lot!

Its this same person who warned of the attacks in Kenya, whos talking about attacks to be taken place around the Hajj.
There is reason for concern!

DEBKAfile is first out with Bin Laden message due for broadcast over al Jazeera Tuesday night:
"Those who did not understand the message I sent in New York and Washington after your previous crimes, and because you are about to attack (he did not say whom), in the name of Allah, I will strike

CIA and FBI directors jointly tell Senate Committee that current terror threat to Americans is the most serious and explicit since 9/11. It includes chemical, biological and radioactive weapons.

Americans were advised to prepare food and water for three days, cell phones and batteries, plastic sheets with masking tape to seal rooms against WMD.

Discovery of a terrorist plot to shoot down an airliner at Londons Heathrow Airport brought 450 troops in APCs to beef up security and guard western flight path World-wide security boost against terror

DEBKAfile's counter-terror report: US, European, Middle East and Far Eastern intelligence agencies stand ready in case Muslim Id Adha Sacrifice festival occasions combined wave of Iraqi-Qaeda terror strikes to anticipate or pre-empt US anti-Iraq offensive.

Most feared are dirty bomb, chemical or biological strikes - also mass-casualty shooting attacks - by terror cells in place or smuggled into target zones

Security has been fortified in major international airports with army patrols. Tanks arrive at Heathrow Tuesday.

Extraordinary precautionary measures are in force in such big cities as New York, Washington, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sydney, Singapore, London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Moscow, Riyadh and Tel Aviv.

I guess its not just America whos on high alert!
Maybe there is something to be afraid abuot and it really isn't just the US government inciting fear onto its citizens for a stronger backing of the war.

Intelligence from every major country has seen signs of an upcoming plot to inflict terror somewhere in the world. Its the job of our government to do the most they can to protect us citizens, and to go after those who they believe are a threat to the world national interests!

although there is no reason to over react as the article may think is warranted but there is a point to be made abuot this latest threat scare. as melech_mike pointed out the increased security and awarness over the past few days by many countries around the world shows that this is not an single american ploy to control its citizens by scaring them.

The next gigantic Terrorism Attack is as sure as Tiesto's next remix of a Pop Song. After Sept.11 I thought they'd keep going on a yearly basis, now I think it's gonna come when we least expect it. Can be 1,3,10 years but it fucking sure will happen.

tom ridge has such a useless job.
Whats the matter with rumsfeld...too busy bitching at germany for not joining? hehe

that whole terrorist threat alert systems is a joke. Looks like a fucking traffic light system. No one knows how the fuck it works. And what exactly are ppl supposed to do? Dig up their chest of guns and try to play hero against any suspicious ppl? Lock themselves at home?? This whole system is racial profiling IMO.

Hahaha I agree with these statements. What I wanna know is can I tell my boss I wanna stay at home because we're at a heightened threat level? I don't really see how the system is racial profiling but I do see it as a complete joke. Some dumbass committee probably brainstormed for days thinking up this idea to portray to the american public that we're proactively combatting terrorism at home. It's just a mindless reassurance to the ignorant masses that if they buy duct tape they'll be a-ok.

Thanks for the website info. Melech_Mike. Seems things are starting to get a little dicey around here. However, my point still stands on the warnings and precautionary measures that our Homeland Security gives us. I'm not exactly sure how else they are supposed to tell us, or what we should do about it for that matter. I saw on one TV station (Fox News) some steps to take for precautionary measures. Along with the duct tape, plastic sheets, 3 day supply of food and water, we should look for suspicious characters, and to not be afraid of walking away from what we may consider a precarious situation. HUH?!?!?! So not only should we run to the grocery and hardware stores to buy supplies, we should profile strange looking people (like Middle Eastern men, right?), and run like hell from them?!? That was truly a pathetic piece of journalism. Anyone else see this? I realize that our Homeland Security is a new cabinet and everything, but surely they are intelligent enough to come up with better pieces of advice.

For me, I'm not going to run scared. If I die of a dirty bomb, mustard gas, smallpox and the like, so be it. I'm not going to run scared from these terrorist jackasses, nor am I going to get panicky from my own government.

Who rememembers when the Congress was asking the FBI for all the evidence that they knew that there was going to be an attack tours the US (9-11), and then there was words that BUSH's administration als knew and didnt do nothing about. ( IN fact, Clinton left Bush papers saying al the threats that Al Quaeda ment, and what they could do). That same week, Ashcroft lunched into Orange Alert once again.. guess what happened.. It diverted the peoples attention. The current US government, at times like this, it will shrink its peoples rights.. and thats what Im seen..

Posted by IronDragon on Feb-13-2003 04:13:

I think it's quite ridiculous for anyone to think that this will help to deter terrorism but:

1) It gives people peace of mind and that counts for at least something.

2) YOU think of something better

Also, I'm no friend of the Bush administration and several of their "war on terror" policies but I do see a way in which the alerts can help. Obviously more aware individuals like you or me (and anyone else who keeps abreast of the worlds' various goings on) are aware of these threats all the time but think of it this way: these terrorists are cowards, if anyone notices them doing something odd then their plans are foiled and if it takes some guy who just happens to be a guy who stayed more alert because of the threats then so be it.
Bottom line (IMO): If these alerts save one life then they will be MORE than worth it.

If the terrorist warning system is at its highest, it causes people to panic. By panic...they will be somewhat overprotective about things...and maybe go overboard with some things. For example...every muslim non-muslims see will be under scrutiny even more. This is racial profiling. I dont blame the people, i blame the Government...they should have never imposed this system to the ppl, and should have allowed law enforcement and the stupid-ass homeland security to worry about it.

Posted by DrUg_Tit0 on Feb-13-2003 17:19:

There have already been a few times when Bin Laden threatened to strike but didn't go through with it. I think his announcements are just a method of producing panic, because he's definitely not so stupid that he'd announce when he's about to attack. He'll probably wait until the situation calms down a bit and strike then.

Funny thing is that when Bin Laden said that although Iraqi government is made up of non-believers, it should still be supported because it is fighting against the US, Bush concluded that it is a clear indication of Iraqi connections with Al Quaeda.

I dont see why people are stocking up food/water/batteries in their basement??? Because if something were to happen the US. Then im going to my neighbor's house and take their food. What's up with the duct tape and plastic sheets? oh geez...

Posted by King_Mack on Feb-15-2003 19:21:

Rasta

statistically speaking, in the States, you're more likely to get hit by a drunk driver and killed, then get killed by a terrorist.
Maybe monkey bush should fix those problems up first.
