max speed on cable connections (technically)
Hey guys,
I got cable last week in my apartment, and I was wondering what technically would be the max download speed available.....
My max is about 370kb/s, but ie starts counting @ 1.19mb/s and than quickly drops to 370, well, not tht quickly...when I try to dl a song of 13 mb, it's downloaded when ie hits 384 kb/s...
It goes slowly from 1.19 mb to 700kb to 500, to 400, & inthe end to 370 kb/s....
A friend of mine said he'd believe that technically 1.19 over cable wasn't even possible, but how the hell does ie get to that then??
btw, I'm on a 100mbit network, so my max in datatransfer (between me & my buds) is 12.5 mb/s
who knows?!?!
Greetz, Kamaya...
the theorical speed limit on a cable is 52Mbps I think. which is about 5300K/sec. But forget about seeing this speed anytime soon at home.

But jon, tested it out>>
the track takes about 20 secs to dl, and if what u say is true>> It should be like this: >>
when I open the save to box, it starts dl the track, not when you ckicked 'ok' to the destinated path......
But when I open the save to box and wait 5 mins, and then click 'ok' the dl should be completed immediately, because it should take 20 secs to dl, but when I try this, it still needs 20 secs to dl the track, so what u r saying couldn't be entirely true>>>
feedback ??
& ahlamalek, 52mbit/s should be >> 52 * 1024 is 53248 kbit/s >> devided by 8 >> 6656 kb/s, so more than 5300 kb/s, are you shure about the 52 mbit? would be nice to have 6656 kb/s, it will be hard to find a server that supports that much (maybe a really good dl accelerator hehe
)
[dorky mode-on]cable rules[dorky mode-off]
greetz,
thanks!

weird..........
i said physical theorical limit... you'll never see those speeds anytime soon.
I know you ment physical max, but I corrected your guess on kb/s while getting 52 mbit/s (5300 > 6656)
& then I asked if you were sure about the 52mbit, ofcourse I know that won't be seen soon.....
still, thanks for the info!
its simple , when you click on a download link, the ie box pops up, and if you hit 'save' then the save as dialog appears? follow???
what happens is IE starts caching your document/archive/movie/sound when the save as dialog pops up, and IE's calculation of download rate is rather.. neandrathalithic. it just takes the average size of the file and keeps dividing it by the time its been downloading, so its (seemeingly) astronomically high when you first start... use any REAL download program and youll see this isnt the case (getright, flashget...)
