gloomy forecast for the global economy...

http://www.time.com/time/europe/davos2003/board.html

Thinking a fast win in Iraq will fix what's wrong with the global economy? TIME's panel of economists sees plenty of gloom ahead.

The USA has the greatest military in the world, Bush is confident that we would beat the crap out of Saddam in 3 seconds. The reality is, thats not true, it can take months .. yes months! . Saddam is not stupid, he knows what he has to deal with, and his soldiers are pretty much trained, dont carry heavy weight like US soldiers do, and really know how to run in the desert... Read todays newspapers, intelligence says that if US attacks, Saddam will destroy bridges, the oil fields, and have in place everything on baghdad ... where it will be ver very veeeery hard to get Saddam out.. its not easy, and Bush and all military leaders need to realized this. war is no joke, its no easy job, nor easy task. And if alot of US soldiers die because of this, it will be more like an embarresment.

This war will be an economic disaster for the USA. It will hasten america's decline as a major power.

It will cost billions which america will have to foot the bill for. They will have to stay in Iraq for years, making them targets for terrorists. The USA think this will be like the first gulf war. Maybe they will wipe out the Iraqi army straight away, maybe the punters will grudgingly accept american soldiers once Saddam is gone.

But the longer the USA stays the more resentful they will get. Eventually they will get attacked by the arabs, snipers shooting american soldiers, guys driving trucks with explosives into army barracks etc.

This war will end just like Israels invasion of Lebanon, in defeat.

In fact I am that convinced that the price of oil will skyrocket I have bought stock in an oil company. If this war goes pearshaped for the USA then I will do quite nicely, course an extremely high oil price will push the world into recession just like it did in the 70's.

If the war goes the way of the eternal optimists in this country than there will certainly be a recovery so-to-speak but it likely won't be too much more than was siphoned off the economy as a result of pre-war jitters.

That leaves us about May 2002 and if memory serves me right things weren't going too well then.
