These Forums are Getting Slower ? How Bout an Update. !

This is probabily the wrong place to post this , but these threads are way to sticky , too slow , im on DSL and they do take a while , its been years since they have been updated. Im a member of lots of forum boards but this one is way to slow. trance.nu has a nice board,

Posted by nekholm on Feb-16-2003 12:56:

Sad but true. Sometimes it takes like 5 minutes to open a thread

get a grip, that forum is twice as slow as this one!
if this forum is slow, the hamster running your modem is on it's last legs!
get a grip

Yeah, I have to wait for a few minutes sometimes. But most of the time it's going fast.

Posted by whiskers on Feb-16-2003 15:36:

the only thing i have to complain about is that sometimes the search function doesn't work and also sometimes it takes a while to load the page when i click "reply"

though i'm on 56k, i can still see my bandwidth monitor showing download speed of something like 1.3k/s and that's really slow, cuz i'm usually at 5.5k/s

Posted by sothis on Feb-16-2003 19:19:

nah, its slow for me and im on cable modem.

in any event, it surely has to do with the extreme amount of bandwidth this server uses... the server that swamper is paying for, by himself, for no doubt a very large amount of money, just to keep this forum up for you people. now, since im guessing none of you have paid a dime to help him pay for the server, although the speed sucks, i suggest you keep your complaining to yourself.

shit, i run a forum that only has like, 300 people and gets about 2,000 hits a day, and it takes up most of the bandwidth on the server its housed, so i am going to have to move it and pay more money. i cant even imagine how much this beast must take to run.

You make no sense.

It's been "years" since what has been updated? The forums software is up to date, the server the whole site is on has changed 3 times in the past year alone (due to growth) - so, what are you talking about?

It has nothing to do with bandwdith/network capacity - the bottleneck is disk I/O and the fact that the forums are on 7200 RPM IDE Drives and since they are not scsi they cannot do concurrent reads which means sometimes bottlenecking occurs when searches are done on terms that have a relatively broad scope... Once that bottlenecking starts it could take a few minutes for the database to recover and spit out the threads you've requested to view or bring up the reply page, etc.

SCSI drives will come - but not yet. If you had been here near the end of 2001 you'd understand what the definition of slow forums were - a lot worse than what happens now intermittently.

indeed

that's why you don't see me complain

you mustn't forget the fact that sometimes there are more then 200 people visiting this forum, and all those people want to open threads or sub-forums.

Posted by Az on Feb-16-2003 22:14:

and all those spam threads as well

Posted by capricorn15 on Feb-16-2003 23:31:

Well hopefully the scsi prob can be sorted soon, maybe someone can donate swamper some

But the forums seem to be working just fine 95% of the time, so im happy

Its a proven fact that black, followed by green are the most restful colours to the eyes, hense black background and green text.
