Huge Tragedy in Chicago

News

21 people die because a club doesnt have proper fire regulations..

*remembers NYE: Megacity*

Posted by mot10n on Feb-17-2003 21:05:

think of this: 21 people died becuase they were running away from some security guard with pepper spray. replace pepper spray with an actual fire, and there'd be tons more dead. it'd be nice to see clubs take this into account, but they wont, and we know it. i guess clubbing is like playing the lottery. only when you win, you lose.

It's a sad day for sure.

I can't believe it really, I had this discussion with over 10 people this weekend concerning how crowded the guv was. If there was ever a fire in there, we'd be fucked!

Posted by Time2Burn on Feb-17-2003 21:18:

^ well i hope none of us lose the "that" lottery then.

What the fuck was that bouncer thinking? He and his boyz too weak to break up a fight?

I've been in a cloud of tear gas and pepper spray and its not fun (duh). Releasing a canister of it in a club would surely cause a stampede.

This is the "Epitome" of stupidty.

yea .. i just read this news article on yahoo.com, what happened sounds terrible. i can't help but think of Labour of Love at the Guv last Sept. when my ex-gf almost suffocated while we were all trying to get from the Koolhaus into the Orange Room.. the people at the back kept pushing forward and the people in the front had nowhere to go but forward (which was being blocked by bouncers) and some people who were a lot shorter had a hard time breathing and were almost crushed to death. After that incident i've just been super irate at club's whos management thinks they can manage their venues like that and I haven't been back to Guv since then..

i dunno if anyone remembers, but a similar thing happened in the Philipines where almost 85% of the club patrons died in an electrical fire due to lack of space and exits in the event of an emergency..

like mot1on sez, i think these kinda guys will just keep taking the chance until something really serious happens.. sometimes i get the feeling as if they think they're untouchable..

This is such sad news.
Kind of ironic it happens a day after i post a thread about lowering the capacity at the Guv.

yea there hasnt been one club yet where i have felt safe fire regulation wise. they should have MULTIPLE exits all around the club! VISIBLE exits with BIG EXIT signs near the door. the only exit i know of in any club is the front door.

Whenever I enter any place, office, restaurant, club, I do a walk around to see where the exits are and always plan a route from where I'm going to be. Same thing goes when I'm walking down the street, always scanning for dangers (people, vehicles, doorways, etc).

Paranoid.... I don't know, but I'd rather be paranoid and alive then otherwise.

I heard on the radio today that doors were purposely barracaded by those who had the mace, and those people weren't security...they were people who had it out for people inside the club, and set up the whole thing.

I was in a club in London (Ontario!) when someone released pepper spray. The club was very long and narrow and it's fucking scary when everyone is running towards the same door, coughing and gagging, scared out of their minds. I can't even imagine what these people went through in their final moments.

Well, all I can say is that shit happens... and as long as it doesn't happen to me, it's all good.

So because this tragedy didn't happen to you, it's all good?

....I hope I am misunderstanding your point.

Posted by Crazy Serb on Feb-18-2003 04:44:

Well, I do feel bad for all those people, since I could've ended up like that too, but hey, guess what? I didn't... and shit like that happens every day, all over the world, and you can't do anything about it (well, you can complain to the GUV management to try and avoid something like that happening here in T.O too, but that's not gonna be very effective).

i think people grieving over something like this is just a natural human reaction. so far no one has suggested advocating anything as of yet ..

It was a girl fight too. But yeah, very stupid. The whole thing is so sad. I saw some clips of witnesses and it was just pure pandemonium. People walking over others faces and people grabbing others to be saved. What about crowd control, didn't we learn anything from fire drills in high school? It from what I heard the exits were there but they were blocked off or locked. The firemen had to use sledgehammers and shit to get them opened.

alas! something sinister has been planned !

Posted by trancearmada on Feb-18-2003 18:23:

I read the National Post earlier today and it said one of the people got knocked out unconcious and woke up inside a body bag! WTF? Also apparently the firemarshal told the owner to close the club down like a month ago, but it was not inforced. WTF???????

I wonder when something similar is going to happen at the Guv: Two shirtless sweaty ginos are at odds over a solid gina (who's dressed like a stripper no doubt), a scuffle ensues and then bouncers come in, cause a panic in the crowd, which is over capacity because Armin is in town. There's a stampede to the doors and 50 people are injured/killed including 2 TA's.......sad but realistic. Imagine a fire or stampede with a crowd the size of Deep Dish's last Year.....sickening. God Bless all Guv patrons, and TA's tht attend the Guv, I'll stick with Viva for the benefit of my own safety, and because they have better talent nyah nyah nyah

One of the city's larger nightclubs, the Guvernment, has a disaster plan in place and mandatory monthly training for staff.

"Most of the time, you have big problems at smaller venues," Charles Khabouth, the Guvernment's owner, said. Smaller venues don't tend to take as many precautionary measures, he said.

"When you have a big venue, you take things a lot more seriously because you see the potential for good things or bad things happening."

The Guvernment, which has several rooms and can hold up to 2,500 people, is careful to meet Ontario Fire Code requirements, he added.

"We have more exits than wall space."

Careful to follow Fire Precautions? Ummmm and what fire precautions say it's ok for people to be shoulder to shoulder with no space for moving at all?

re: Howells, Deep Dish, and others I'm sure
