Question about nightclub DJ's

how do the dj's in clubs spin stuff that doesn't have a breakdown in it? are they spinning house or something similar, cause almost everything that I have listened to has a breakdown in it...hopefully you guys can help me out here.

start listening to more progressive... it puts people in a nice groove in warm-up sets... it doesnt have many break down and is great for openning/closing djs... leave the peak time trance with break downs to headlining djs... thats what they're there for...

Ok that was helpful, but my question is, at the club the headlining djs don't play stuff with breakdowns, so what genre of music is that? but thank you for your input.

Its a progressive style of music. Probably some type of progressive house or trance. Lets not forget that all clubs and djs play different styles of music so saying "at the club the headlining djs don't play stuff with breakdowns" is completely incorrect.

well think of it like this... usually a regular night at any given club starts out like this... you have a warm up dj playing from 9:30 to about 11pm playing some kind of classic or groovy house... from about 11 till about 1am you get a progressive house dj who sets the tone for the night... then usually you would get another dj that would warm up for the headliner... this guy would carry on with progressive but throw in some harder beats, not too many to outdo the headliner, but just enough so that the headliner can go ahead and do his thing from 2:30 or 3:00 till about 5 or 5:30... then you get the closers who again play progressive house or trance and slowly take it down step by step...

mmmk, sounds good. Thanks for the input guys

I think you should play whatever the hell you want. Afterall, it's your style, your music, your track selection. Who cares if they fire ya? There will be people who digs yours style, music, and track selection, and you will be back up on your feet!!

"MUSIC IS LIFE"

Posted by mute79 on Feb-18-2003 20:44:

^^^ it doesnt actually work like that... you can like hip hop if you want, but if you're expected to play a certain style of music, and you don't, you're done

Posted by Bear4569 on Feb-18-2003 22:47:

I agree with ya deejay2002, but like tg said it doesn't work like that. You do have to cateer to what the club wants you to do. But in all actuallity, yes it's your style, your track selection and so on. That is what it all boils down to.

wishful thinking!

let's put it this way:

if you don't want to play the style that the club wants, then there are tons of other dj's like you out there who will.

i wonder who would get hired?

Posted by JohnSmith on Feb-19-2003 06:35:

guess what though? i don't care about clubs.

I am gonnna go home and play epic breakdown after epic breakdown for my girlfriend and she's gonna love every minute of it

is this a metaphor for something else?

Posted by JohnSmith on Feb-19-2003 15:31:

well... i will play the records, but after i've turned off the decks, there will be climax after climax as well!

Posted by deejay2002 on Feb-19-2003 22:28:

I still wouldnt kiss ass to get a job. If I want play my shit and the club owner wont let me, then I would probably get a job that will get me a six figure income and then freaking own my nightclub hahahah j/k

I just love trance, and it's simple as that!

Posted by P`zazz on Feb-20-2003 20:56:

you guys are all right but if you don't play the music you love then djing wont be fun anymore, it'll be just like any other job that you do just for the money and not something you do because you love it

Posted by Alccode on Feb-20-2003 21:12:

P'zazz, I agree 100%. In my earlier post, my intention was to indicate that it's difficult, generally not a good idea and unsuccessful, to "force" your music onto a club. If the club plays one kind of music, then you're inclined to play that yourself, if you spin there.

This doesn't mean, however, that you should "change" your style to adjust to the club. Unless, as P'zazz indicated, you're in for the money. Otherwise, if you spin A and the club doesn't want you to spin A, then quite simply go find another place that will.

We need variety! Don't conform to what others are doing (that includes clubs) - stick to your uniqueness... that way the world will stay exciting.

I'm with you all the way

I have turned down gigs simply because I do not like playing music I do not love and enjoy myself but many other people do that, I don't know how they can stand it

WTF thats the most stupidest thing i have heard, fuck the owner, if your the DJ then your going to play what you like, not what the owner wants.

AND yes i know you might get fired, but who gives a fuck, there are still many other clubs that dont actually give a fuck.

GRRRR im pissed....fucking club owners.

Posted by Shad0wmaster on Feb-22-2003 17:48:

play your own style of music, that way you'll be better and people at the club will have a better time and the club owners will get more money if you hate what you're playing you'll be shite and everybody loses

Umm...the owner OWNS the club.

Think of it this way - imagine you own a car (club) and hand it over to a painter (DJ) who will paint the car (spin a set) as to make it spiffy and cool (make the crowd happy).

Now, according to what you said, the PAINTER would say, "fuck the car owner (club owner), I'll paint the car whatever colour/style I want (spin whatever I want)."

As you can see, this is quite absurd. As the car owner, YOU say what you want the car to look like, not the PAINTER.

Likewise, the club owner decides what will be played in his own damn club, not the DJ.

That's just the way things work.

I don't think you could have said it any better

but arent you missing something? the crowd factor... who is the crowd in your little story (which I believe has a very good point btw)? the club owner may be happy with a certain type of music but the crowd may be satisfied with another.

I don't think it's wise to go against the manager though so I guess the general conclusion from all this, if your not gonna or dont wanna spin what you're supposed to then dont get the fking job cause nobody gains (cept offcoase for your pocket if you dont screw up)
