Celebrities speaking out against war?
What is your opinion of celebrities that have strong political opinions?
Sheryl Crow was ridiculed for wearing a "War is not the answer" T-shirt to an awards show, Sean Penn was castigated for visiting Baghdad and Martin Sheen was slammed for exploiting his TV role as a fictional U.S. president by fronting an anti-war television spot.
Millions around the world have marched in protest against any war with Iraq, Nobel peace laureates have spoken out, and popes and poets have urged restraint.
But when Hollywood -- or some of it -- started using its media muscle to further the anti-war rhetoric, it prompted a storm of controversy that reflects America's love-hate relationship toward its pervasive celebrity culture.
"The media created us, puts us on the air, and then says 'How dare you use your rights as a celebrity?'," said television producer Robert Greenwald, founder of the fledgling Artists United to Win Without War.

just like anybody, celebrities can have their opinions, which makes them an easy target because they are in the spotlight....the media pisses me off sometimes, especially those "celebrity" tv shows on nbc, or abc....cant stand. celebrities are regular ppl like everyone else, let them be

I hate most of the celebrities that protest the war because most of the time they have no freaking CLUE what the whole conflict is about and can't even articulate WHY there should shouldn't be war. Haha what I thought was funny was when sean penn went to Iraq and the Iraqis put up so much propoganda that Penn was against the war, against the US, etc. Afterwards Penn found out about all the crap they were saying, he was shocked and felt "betrayed" that the Iraqis would lie. Hahaa what did he expect? Oh well, not sure of all the facts completely but if I have time this weekend I'll try and find out some info about it.
i like what dustin hoffman said to you americans : "wake up people , bush is using the whole terror and 9/11 argument to scare the shit out of us and make us believe a war is necessary"
Celebrities obviously have the right, just like any person, to say whatever they choose on any subject.
That being said, oftentimes their sentiments(while heartfelt) are often nothing more than the typical "no war, no where" which
Simiarly, few are well informed.
As a result, those capable of actual intelligent debate (Janeane Garofalo for example) are often patronized by the media, which is a shame but it does hold that most celebrities really have nothing dreadfully releavant to add to the debate.
I hope that with these celebrities speaking against the war, more people with a lot of influence on Mainstream culture will be willing to do the same.
