Okay, here we go. We've tried before to come up with working definitions on this forum, and even though we haven't completely accomplished our goal, I'll give it a shot anyway.

Trance, by it's definition, is patterned after primitive music. In primitive cultures, most music consists mainly (or exclusively) of a simple drum beat in 4/4 time on the quarter notes. The idea is to synchronize this with the heart beat, thus causing the tribe to become one with the music and each other. It is a very spiritual experience (so I'm told) and provides a trance like state for its listeners. Our trance music uses the same drum pattern and adds synths on top of it to further the experience.

Uplifting trance uses floating high synths which are the focal point of the music. It has an emotional quality that brings feelings of happiness or even tears of joy to those listening to it. While progressive music has a darker tone, uplifting trance has the nasty habit of painting big smiles on everyone's faces . The synth patterns are often in the image of classical music, and generally are in a major key.

Epic trance, on the other hand, is much more opinion based. I'm not even sure it should be classified as an genre. What is epic to me, might be cheesy or boring to you. All things epic do have a couple qualities in common though. Generally, they have larger than life climaxes and help fuel emotion for those that like the music. For me, a track such as Rank 1 - Airwave is as epic as it gets. For you, maybe it's something different.
