His productions are also pretty good!

I love Bedrock "Heaven Scent"

and Chakra "I Am" (Bedrock Mix) is also good!

Posted by moogwai on May-24-2001 20:25:

Well.. he's a GOD if you like the music he plays... and i don't like that music.. so I don't like Digweed.. simple

Digweed is amazing. My theory is that he is an alien, no human could possibly mix as perfect as he does, while at the same time show no sort of emotional expression.

He is an alien I tell you!

Decent DJ poor music selection...he puts me to sleep. I'd rather go to bed early than see him.

Diggers doesn't really spin trance...maybe a tech-trance if you are being picky. He spins progressive house mostly...but he does it with flawless acuracy that always leaves me dumbfounded. I swear, I don't think I will ever get sick of listening to GU 19, simply because it is so well put together, it takes many times listening to it to understand what he is doing.

He is a brilliant dj. I can understand how some of you may see him as boring. I did once as well, but now I have a different kind of taste, and as a result, a great liking in his abilities.

Drunk

I just don't dig weed!
Digweed, Sasha, and Paul Oakenfold are exactly the group of DJ's that I don't like. They're too slow and esoteric...

I prefer the other group: Armin, Tiesto, and Ferry.

Does anyone agree with this distinction?

Posted by Aviston on May-24-2001 21:45:

I think he's a great dj, a really cool person, and does alot for the scene. The stories of him still spinning after everyone has left are legendary. I'm not into progressive, so I don't listen to him much, but I have alot of respect for what he does. I'd go see him live if I had a chance though, he is Diggers afterall .

Posted by phatdelt on May-24-2001 21:47:

amen viceroy - i have all of his GU cd's as well as bedrock and all of them are amzing and completely different in their own respects. I also have a few live sets (massive, WMC, Karma) where he mixes it up even more with some breaks and house.

to each their own on their tastes in DJ's for me digweed is one of my tops

on another note - sadly i wasn't there at the mayan when he made GU 19, or at the release party - had plenty of friends though that were there and said it was amazing

Posted by bluE_Neon on May-24-2001 21:58:

Satan (eek!)

i like progressive...but i dont know...those he really spin dat Digweed...i know Sasha has good track selection...but usually either Digweed's or Sasha's double CD's, 1 of them is only good...which is usually CD...GU19 i think i have dat 1...ya bro dat 1 is amazing...i heard it a zillion times ...and u have 2 hear it a lot 2 like it..just like ne other CD

Posted by mute79 on May-24-2001 22:01:

viceroy, right on... GU 19 is really an amazing set... i generally like his shit... i hope he comes to toronto sometime...

Posted by breakdown on May-24-2001 22:09:

the thing is..
if u don't hear sasha or digweed live
u just don't feel the same atmosphere as listenin to a cd..
hence the boringness

Posted by mute79 on May-24-2001 22:11:

well that pretty much goes for all djs... have to hear it live to fully appreaciate it...

Posted by phatdelt on May-24-2001 22:13:

I can hardly understand either one of your posts, but I think Sasha and Diggers usually work together/tag team both CD's if I'm not mistaken and IMHO both have always had excellent track selection - what are you basing your opinions on?

I adore his Bedrock productions, sets are good, Stargazer was the only production under his name i more than "liked"
But i only "like" progressive anyway :PP

Posted by patticus on May-24-2001 22:38:

i like prog house, and i love digweed, but only love some of his productions / sets. for example i haven't even gotten into GU 19 yet, but i think GU 001 (06) is amazing.
id definitely love him even more if he played a little more trance, but his style and skills are incomparable.
so i can see how other people dont like sasha, digweed and oakie and call them boring (i started off the same way, 2 years ago) but you have to understand that armin, ferry and tiesto will soon epitomize commercial trance (if they're not there already). much of their productions and sets follow this line, with the odd exception (armin's sets, some ferry and tiesto productions e.g. flight 643)
i love them still, but DO realize that it's quite a commercial sound.

so at least try to open your minds to more progressive, deeper sounds.. i did (and now i love all these guys)

Posted by Eugene on May-24-2001 22:48:

Cool

Well, Patticus, maybe you're right...
After all you're a Supreme trancEaddict, and I got into trance only half-a-year ago. So probably my tastes will change soon.

I do see your point.

However, don't most people like Oakenfold, Sasha, and Digweed? You say that these DJ's represent the more underground, less commercial side of trance. Then one would assume that they would be less popular than the "commercial" Dutch DJ's.

Yet it's precisely these DJ's, especially Oakenfold, who are considered "mainstream"! Wouldn't you agree? And doesn't this demonstrate that here we simply have a difference in tastes?

Posted by bluE_Neon on May-24-2001 22:59:

Smoking ..umm..something

wat r u talking about....did u hear GU Ibiza by Sasha...it is so much better dan Digweeds GU Hong Kong or LA...ive thought Sasha's musik is so slow...but Digweed's is even slower...if its progressive, dan is progressive house dat Digweed spins and i dont usually listen 2 house...Sasha spins house 2 right? GU Ibiza first CD is deep house...dat house i like coz its deep u know hehe
but still Digweed, Sasha and Oakenfold have been on 4 a while....and Oakenfold is da GOD...ya he has da same mixes and dats really shitty from him...not making a new 1...oh well..dam actually my sista has da GU 12 which 1 is dat coz i was mistaken about 19
peace and respect peeps

Posted by patticus on May-24-2001 23:28:

i havent heard hong kong or LA
i have digweed's syndey GU. 001 in the series (06 in boxed i believe)
CD1 is prog house
CD2 more trancey. but they're amazing.

sasha spins some prog and deep house, yes... ibiza is mostly trance if i recollect.

in response to eugene, oakenfold and sasha are looked upon as the forefathers of the trance scene: the long-time trance lovers, etc love them. oaky's become more commercial as of late, but most people just recognized his "big name" before. not really his sound, because it's ever-changing.

i meant commercial as in that catchy, synth-riff stuff which can easily top the charts on radio one and other (much less quality) top 40 stations. sasha's sets were/have always been very "underground" so to speak, not appealing to the mainstream but thats WHY real "genuine" (thats tongue in cheek) trance lovers, of deep and progressive sounds, always adore sasha. also with him, i dont even like ALL of his stuff, but the mixing is always impeccable and amazing even if i dont like the track selection.
back to before, for example sasha & digweed aren't that big up in canada because (esp. if you're not in toronto) progressive trance has only recently started to blossom. so they're not revered as "gods" , and in fact many people don't even know of them. but tiesto and ferry corsten ARE well known here, because everyone loves the catchy uplifting.
i think you see my point, i'll stop rambling now.

Hey Patticus,

I agree with you and I find your reply interesting, but I think the problem here lies in our definition of the word "trance." I think these two groups of DJ's spin completely different kinds of music. One of them is trance, perhaps, or the other, but not both.

Now, I've seen "trance" as a genre defined like this: Fast-paced, lush, 4/4-rhythm, with prominent synths.

You may say that this describes Trance Anthems, and not all of trance. But doesn't it aptly describe the vast majority of modern trance tunes? I've been downloading lots of trance MP3s for the last several months, and almost all of them fit that description, and are completely unlike Oakenfold's or Sasha's repertoire.

I think here we have a clash of terminology. Many places and services like amazon.com put Tiesto and Sasha into the same "Trance" category, and I think this is wrong. Maybe a new concept like "Trance-Pop" should be introduced.

BTW: If you ask me, I don't think that "trance" is a good term for the definition above, I think "Dance" is. Armin, Tiesto, and Ferry play music that's closer to Dance, whereas the term "Trance" as we know it from literature is better-suited for Oakenfold's dreamy, hazy, brooding style.
