Review: Johan Gielen - Viva Nightclub - 03.07.03
alrite .. let's do this the old fashion way..
Set:
Unbelieveable. I don't know if i can really compare this set to the first one that he had. He really mixed it up this time playing both unknown tracks and some memorable anthems. From what I can recall:
Three Drives on a Vinyl - Greece 2000 (Something remix)
Rank 1 - Airwave (Something remix)
DJ Tiesto - Lethal Industry (Something remix)
System F - Out of the Blue (Something remix)
Underworld - Born Slippy (Something remix)
and a bunch of other Svenson and Gielen tracks that I don't know the names of as well as some other tunes that i've heard so much before but can't recall..
What I liked most about this set was the mixure of different tunes. Johan does an incredible job working the crowd and was so into it. He's literally Europe's version of Dekoze. He even dropped a good 45 mins of techno towards the end of his set which totally destroyed whatever was left in us. oh and props for bringing in MC JD to do some MC'ing during the set.. definately was a nice touch, not to say we don't like hearing hansolo's barely inaudible "Viva IN THE HOUSE!!!!! TRANCEADDICT IN THE HOUSE!!!" while screaming at the top of his lungs instead. 
The Crowd:
Holeee Guvernment Batman ! the placed was RAMMED !! I wonder if this is just a byproduct of highschool March break and the kiddies heading to the club. But man was it packed in there, I think almost as many people as the 1 Year Anniversary, perhaps even a little more !
As for the make up of the crowd, the amount of Asianess (as some of you are always so concerned about) 
was about usual. Altho it's nice to see a bigger mixture there every time I go back so atleast you can definately tell that things are changing (to an extent).
Overall

guys .. honestly it was a pleasure partying it up with you all again. And for those that were there tonight, you realize that I am now truly a tranceADDICT (i'm sure some of you know what i mean!)
Anyways, time for a shower and then to nurse myself from a 102�F cold .. 
besides, I only have 45 days till PVD .. 
Yeah it was a freaking amazing set, i hadn't been to a big party like that in ages.
Viva (Crowd, Sound):
It was my first there and it was incredible, the vibe in the club was amazing but as you all already know a lot of asians which didn't bother me becaues i was there for the music, and the sound system was off the hook.
I dont think it was Rammed i could easily dance in front of the booth which was fine. I will be there for PVD FOR SURE!!@#
The Set:
The set was so amazing and so organized and i love the techno he played towards the end, i was so out of energy and the he dropped Twisted and i went crazy. I love the little techno he played towards the end.
Funny thing about this set, i was about to get some water Because I was so freaking tastey and then he played Out of the blue, and im like fk that, my thirst can wait

Overall i really enjoyed the set because he didn't play a lot of cheese and it was very well done.

Gielen dropped some bombs early on and I loved it..
not really into techno or hard trance so the epic aspect is the only part I enjoyed.
Highlights.
1) Chicane - Offshore [ ? remix ]
2) some vocal track near the first hour or so ....not sure what it was but really uplifting and vocals were hard to understand..
Whoever knows this post it please as well as the remix of offshore.

Hey Everyone, this is my very first post, I meet sum of u amazing people at Trance Addict, sorry I didn't get ur names, cuz I think I've only seen u guys at Talla 2XLC before, that party was TRULY AMAZING I FELT LIKE I WAS IN DREAMLAND!!! Johan Gielen's set was nothing I expected, it was soo much more.!!!

Holy shit what a great night.
Johan played the best set ive heard in TO in a very long time.
absolute perfection. The vibe was also very sweet.
Viva has it going on big time. They know exactly what they are doing when it comes to entertaining a trance loving crowd.
My girlfriend Jess and I couldn't have been more pleased with the way this night turned out.
It was great for us to meet Andrew aka Precurser and of course to see Flec and his boys again.

Awesome to see so many people last night partying hard. 4am - Still Rammed. Pepi, nice to see you back out again.
Hartec also played Midway - Monkey Forest which lit me up.
Gielen was nuts on the decks and played a lot of kick ass tunes, but the one that did it for me was ealry and it was PLUMMET - DAMAGED (ANTILLAS REMIX), WOW was it nice hearing that tune loud. Sorry TK. EDIT - He ended with his new Track Beachbreeze with Jan Johnston
If at any time Mark Oliver spins tonight like he did last night, he may just over trance Ferry. I could only stay for the first half hour, but went something like Dark Suite - Dark Sweet Piano with Aurora Hear you Calling vocals layered, Then energy 52 - cafe del mar (not sure of remix), then 2 Players - Signet (G+M Remix), Matt Darey - Electro Buzz and then I left because it hurt so good.
Temporal Rythym - on the fucking ball as usual.
Oh yeah, MC JD was great and my lungs appreciated his work.

Screw the old-fashioned way, here's my rambling review:
First off, before I say anything about Gielen, HARTEC WAS FREAKING AMAZING! It's a miracle he didn't totally destroy me (and Viva's sound system) before 2:30! I missed most of his set at the 1 year party 'cause I had to leave early but... wow. I suck at naming tracks but I know I recognized more than a few from ITWT7 (only twice as hard and fast!).
Gielen was awesome. He mixed in everything, trance, techno, prog... my legs were killing me by the end but he would not let me sit down.
My TA shouts:

Wow, surprising number of TA's now that I look at this list. Also a few inactive or non-TAs who know -of- TA and might be reading (Jason? ...the brown guy lol. And another named Adrianna I think). There was also someone with a hat and a shirt that said "tranceaddict" on the front... I can't remember who that was. Anyway THANK YOU ALL, it wouldn't have been the same without you! Hope I didn't miss anyone.
EDIT: I almost did miss someone, DR. Z! At least that's who people told me you were, I didn't get a straight answer from you. You crack me up dude! Not at all what I expected. 
Oh and Mark O's surprised me, it was my first time hearing him as well. I might just drop by and see him in the Guvernment tonight.
Once again, awesome awesome party, what a way to kick off the weekend. It did get PACKED in there to the point where I could barely breathe, but for most of the night it wasn't too bad.
I will see many of you again tonight... and by the way, I'm usually not a lush. I'm just on a bender. Do they have revs at the Guv?
JOHAN GIELEN OWNS VIVA!!!!!!!!!!!
It's just one of those nites (or in my case, mornings) when u come home and say "That was the best party.... EVER!!!". Thing is, I think 1/2 the parties thrown by Temporal Rhythm have sent me home thinking that very same thought. It doesn't lessen the value of any previous party- it just shows that they throw parties the PROPER way, and very often, it reaches that 100% mark on the nose. Am I making any sense? Who knows?! All I know is, I HAD A BLAST!!!
Hartec laid it down HARD at the beginning, and really started playing some really sweet stuff that would better flow into Gielen's set. MC JD was GREAT! Oliver was on the ball, if not more so. He makes me his slave every time. Mark Oliver like you'll never hear him at Guv.
That was my 7th time seeing Johan, and I think it was my favorite set of all. He just keeps getting better and better with every visit. His skills on the mixer tonite blew my mind!!! Track selection was incredible. Danced all nite- every muscle in my body is sore! Johan is one of those rare DJ's who takes me higher than any drug will- I'm so glad I stayed sober last nite. (the expression on my face all nite: )
Got a copy of the new Trance Energy 2003 cd with DVD (thanks SO much Johan!). Love and respect.
I took a million pictures. They'll be posted this week. (Still got more to take tonite too. UGH!!!!!). Met a ton of 'Viva-virgins', new TA faces, and loads of really nice people in general. I can't even begin to post shout-outs- just know that if I spoke to you at all, each and every one of you are partly responsible for making my night so great.
I suck with track ID's, but Arsalan got most of what I would remember anyways. He mixed Fat Boy Slim's "Star 69" with Umek's "Gatex" (not a Mauro track, but was always played by him).
He also played:
Divine Inspiration- "The Way" (Green Martian mix),
Marcel Woods- "Serenity"
DJ Sash (?) with ? - "Recycled" (on Media Records)- the song that sampled 'Joyenergizer'
& closed his set w/ a Jan Johnston track- "Beachbreeze" by Svenson & Gielen-?
The 'Super Spin' party will probably pale in comparison to Johan.
If you missed this party last nite, just kick yourself..... HARD (you deserve it)
Only 12 more days til session #8 w/Johan @ the Dance Valley party during the WMC in Miami. WooooooHooooo!!!!!!!

in my honest opinion, i must say that there was nothing special about it. I actually think Marco V from last year Blew me away more. I guess its all in our own taste in music. Either way the crowd was hype. The dancers I got a better look and man have they got Camel toe.
I think I saw Tatgirl with a camera going up to the dj stand, DAMN, she looks so much better now. hahaha.

overall a good night. Way too many guys once again as always in viva. I tried to dance with some of the girls but most of them were uptight and wouldn't dance with anyone else but there own little groups, very disappointing. makes me wana go to a hip/hop club lol
disappointed that i didn't see many other ta's though, we got there at around 11:30 and saw no one at coffee time so i guess most of you were inside already.

johan gielen was really good!
this was my first time in that club, and its shit! look at the crowd.. they cant even party. fuckin stoners with ghetto clothes took E's and smoked pot the whole night, and just sat there. i swear, i felt like kicking them.. there were normal people too, but not many. and there were so many 40year old people.. what the hell is this.. ill go back to europe and see this guy spinning @ Sensation and other good clubs & events with normal crowd.
Johan Gielen was so amazing! didnt get there till around 2:30, but it was still packed! double the amount of parking spaces were used! got to stay till the end for once. Viva sure looks different with the lights on! it was one of the best times at Viva. hope to see the pix soon.

Well, I must say - music wise this was a very good party, Hartec owned! You should post your tracklist EVERYTIME you play, it's always nice to know we got amazing local talen . Johan surprised me too, his was was much better IMO than last time, great energy.
Now, in terms of crowd - I've never seen it worse. The place was waaaay overpacked. I'd say about 1/3 of the ppl was just standing 1/6 were dancing (PS I don't count bopping your head to the rhythm dancing ) and 3/6 were doing drugs. Too many ppl smoking weed, popping e and sniffing coke. I don't really care whether you do drugs or not. Just don't do them on the dance floor, standing there taking that shit then tripping out and bumping into everyone around you. I mean go to the side, trip out, look at the trippy laser, talk to the walls around you, you can even BUMP into them for all I care, just don't do it on the floor.
Music wise 9.6/10
Crowd 4.0/10 - horrid
gielen was sick! he pure knows how to raise the atmosphere
music 8.5 /10
crows 2/10 (2 for the nrmal guys in the front)
