GRR at CDJs!
Lolz i was at an autoshow last saturday, Import Extreem Showdown in LA and one lil corner had the trance bumping, they had some great equipment there but i was upset at the lil slut CDj heh, he mixed fine but he was playing all burns, so if any of you out there are rocking the CDs thats cool but buy your damn music you thiefs! lolz
That has and always will in the future be my only complaint against CDJin is pirating the music that i waste my money for dates on lmao.
And its not fair cuz he gets to spin rare material that i dont lmao.
word
haha...yea man most def.!
playin burnt cds at an event -- eeew!
me have cdj with burnt cds, but I buy my music as well
Just thought I'd share the following while we're on the subject. Max Graham probably hit the nail right on the head when he recently gave this interview in Singapore.

| Whats your take on the mp3 episode? Are you an advocate? Okay.. well, I was really into it in the beginning. I love technology. But I think now all we see are kids not willing to support small independent labels anymore. Hope is a great label, but sales have gone down. Ask anyone- whats happening is a cause for concern. Guys are using Final Scratch and playing tracks burned on CDs. You see some of them taking Sander Kleinenberg Live @ Space, Ibiza, cut out the tracks and edit them so they can mix it- I mean, what IS that? These small labels make no money. Our remix fees go down, so we dont have enough money to buy gear for our studio to make more records. The labels dont want to make more records because people will just rip them and make them downloadable. So everybody loses- the producers lose, the labels lose, the stores lose because they cant sell any more records. I was in a restaurant in Toronto about three weeks ago, and theres a DJ with Final Scratch. Theres maybe about twenty people in the restaurant, and hes playing every brand new record thats out on white label, test pressing.. and you know.. where do you get that? And I hear the background of one of the tracks, its like KISS FM!- Hes just ripped it off Digweeds show! These kids are killing the scene. I think its a good wake-up call for the major record labels, because these guys have millions of dollars and they can afford that, but its small record labels that wouldnt be able to sustain. So many of them are growing out of business. Its not attracting new producers and new remixers anymore. Its not growing anymore; its shrinking. These guys that are into the scene but dont want to pay for vinyls.. its just tough. We can see the CD thing has backfired. The press are really bad too because they get a lot of stuff ahead of time to review, and we see Sashas album out on the Internet two months before its release. I mean, its not even a mix album, its his personal album! That affects sales, which will eventually affect the decision to make an album, because an album like Sashas takes a lot of money to do. People have to support what they want to see now and in the future. Sander Kleinenberg will come up with a superb album and the record label wont want to put it out and people will go Oh why arent you putting it out? These are the same people who download it free! Oh, wheres Sanders next album? I mean, its like, its their fault.. |
Graham hit the nail to the T, thanks for that interview Great Outdoors.
People don't have any conscience. All they see is here and now, and forget to realize they are hurting themselves in the future by making labels go out of business and in the end, music will be coming out less frequently due to the labels out of business.
I *do* support the mp3 scene, but not to the extent of ONLY owning mp3s and not supporting the artists who work their ass off in getting quality production out. You like and enjoy a track, buy it. People shouldn't be allowed to play burnt cds (except if it's their own production) at events -- seriously. That sort of philosophy/ethics should come from the "deejays" themselves, too bad greed will be the demise of all (record companies included).

c'mon those guys really are annoying! Ripping tunes from KISS.FM??? Whats the point? Yeah U got to play the newest whitelabel first... whats the difference?? Its all about atmosphere & feeling. These pesky radio rips RUIN it. and I think it feels so much better when playing good tracks that you actually BOUGHT!!! Im proud to support the artists, although I dont have much records. But then again I dont do gigs anyway, yet

i dont get this artists... its obvious that its gonna be ripped, u cant really make a good profit out of vinyls u sell (as a starting producer...) u cant expect all people to be fair.. also people who r really serious bout it r buying records... the money comes from gigs not records...
i would like for more viynls to come out on cd single like
midtone- pearl, echoplex- def by stereo etc.
[EDIT] what is finalscratch by the way?is it something that allows you to cheat as a dj?

I am a cdj-dj (at least I try to be
) and YES, I download mp3's and burn them on cd's, BUT only to practise at home and to listen if the songs are any good. I will however NEVER play ripped mp3's in a dancing or wherever and make money of them (besides the sound quality sucks, you can hear it immediately if you're playing an mp3).
The other thing that I'm doing is burning songs from cd's that I own, because usually there are 2-3 songs on a bought cd that I really like, so that makes it easier.
Anyway, I'm planning on buying vinyl in a while, cuz any dj that can't work with both vinyl and CDJ, now THOSE are sucky dj's

Personally in my opinion i dont see anything wrong with downloading songs that arent avaialble on vinly and playing them on CDR. -BRETT |
I don't think there is anything wrong with it as long as you aren't getting paid to play the stuff you burned. Now, a track or two here or there, I don't think is a big deal, but a whole set of burned CDs should not be done. Taking advantage of people with free material is just wrong IMO.

i have to agree with wushuboy here...i dun see anything wrong w/ cdjs as long as u are still supporting the artists in some way. in other words, as long as your repetoire isn't ALL burnt mp3s. in that case...big thumbs down to u.
but honestly djdigdug....do u not spin ANY cds? or own final scratch? or wish u could get ur hands on some rare vinyl so u could put it in ur set? maybe u have the money to buy records every week to keep up to date, but a lot of us don't. :P
my input for the day.

I may like a rare song.. but im not gonna be stupid with my money and pay more than 100 bux for one record just so i can play it. |

If you really wanted the track to play, then you'd be prepared to pay the money for it. You're giving yourself an advantage over other DJs who have *morals* and thus won't play burnt music. Your argument about tracks being rare and expensive isn't worth anything. You argue that you only use rips of rare and expensive tracks, lemme guess, but the end of the year you'll decide that $15 is too much for a vinyl, so you'll start ripping the easily available ones. Don't hide behind the "expensive and rare" line. and just for the record, I've just bought a copy of Ayu - 'M'. Why? because I think it's an incredible track and I want to be able to play it for people. I don't know about you, but I won't be playing tracks that I haven't bought and own myself. |

I don't support the idea of ripping stuff easilly available and playing it because you're a cheap ass, and I also think it's profoundly wrong that people who own these so called "collector" vinyls find it correct to rip off the buyers. The artists are not making more money off of it, and that's due in first place to the label cause they fucked themselves over releasing 500 copies, FORCING people to do unlegit copies. It's harsh and sounds ignorant but come to think about it , it's the closest to reality as you can get. I personnaly will NEVER put a ridiculous amout of money inside some bastards pockets. Oh and here's another point of view I have that I'm sure will make you cringe, but I consider buying second hand records as actual "theft" from the record labels. think about it |
i see no problem w/ playing cdr's IF it is physically impossible to support the artist / lable w/ the song. There are a few songs, which I have, that aren't released yet, as soon as those songs finally get released, I will be purchasing the vinyl, until then, the only way I can spin it, is w/ my re-mastered .mp3 i have.
If the song they are spinning is, say Tillman Urmacher - On The Run... then that is just plain wrong. but then again, that is my opinion
Now, the other thing is policing this, you cant take .mp3's away, that would be impossible, you cant turn off cdr functionality on cd players do tue legit tunes that are being spun on cdr.. the only option would be to create an irrecordable frequency that exposes itself in line recordings.. they do it for movies, should be able to do that for music too

The only point I like to make is an observation.
I've noticed many are too quick to judge and assume the DJ spinning CDs is a thief. This may not have occurred to some of you but there are DJs who prefer spinning on CDs over vinyl. They rip a legally bought vinyl, burn it onto CD and spin from it. I am one of these DJs and I can tell you from my experience what I do.
As a background, I produce music, have a residency at a local club, and hate scratching my vinyl. I rip vinyls onto CDs for two main reasons. 1. By editing the tracks, I can crop a track to a cue point which I use for fast mixing. If I'm doing fast sampling, it's easier than finding the vinyl and the right groove. 2. I've been known to rework and re-edit tracks and spin them.
The point is, there are people are making money off someone else's hardwork without paying their dues. This is clearly wrong and intolerable. Still there are people out there that use the CDJs legally and artistically paying their full dues to those who responsible for the music. Let's keep that in mind next time we see a DJ using CD players.
