Major: Dentist

Just wondering if any TA in here is majoring in becoming a dentist? If you are studying in that field can u give me some info (tips) in it coz I'm planning on going into that field. It'll be helpful if you can recommend the classes I should be focusing on (i.e biology, chemistry, math, etc.) any tips would help. thanks in advance.

i think you can just do a pre-med sort of course then you have to get into dentistry grad school. a friend of mine went to school to become a dental hygenist. she said there is only one school for dentistry in each state. i also heard it is a pretty tough thing to study. but i don't have first hand information on that. you should really try asking your advisor or your dentist.

like any professional program, med, dentistry, optometry, chiro, you take the same courses:

year one (usually) of:
-introduction to biology I and II
-general chemistry I and II
-physics (mechanics course and electromag/thermal)
-calculus I and II
-some nonsci option

also a year of:
-organic chem I and II

these are the general requirements for the programs, but slight alterations may be diff from univ to univ.

in the UK u will have to do A levels (dunno if u've heard of them)

ideally a uni would like you to have done Maths, Chemistry and Biology, although biology is the MOST important one.

You would have needed to achieve an ABB result in thos esubjects to be accepted into MEd/Dental school. Then its a 5 year course!

you can't major in dentistry as an undergrad but if you want to go to graduate school and become a dentist major get a BS in science. you can do biology...but in my opinion all pre-meds seem to study biology. instead, major in chemistry, biochemistry, or math and get a better basic understanding of science while differentiating yourself from the typical pre-med crowd.

smartest thing is to go talk to the college you wanna end up studying Dentistry at and ask them what classes and pre-reqs you need to take to make it

good luck!

Thanks for the reply everyone. I'm planning on attending a junior college and then transfer to one of the dental schools in southern california. So basicly to get a DDS Degree you gotta have good skills in science and math. I'm not too strong at math and I know it'll be tough but I'm determined and I really wanna get my DDS. Aite once again thanks everyone.

The prerequisites in the US for Dental school:

1 year bio
1 year general chem
1 year Organic chem
1 year physics
1 semester of calc

its quite hard and was boring for me, but if you like science the go for it. I Stuck with it for a year then switch to Econ/bus
