DO Protests Work???

well, do they?

i'm talking about war protests in particular.

not ' i'm a woman i wanna vote & get a job protests'

I'm talking about a current issue here. seems like every other day there's a protest somewhere in the world.

BUT

when in world history has a few thousand people parading around, casting repetitive chants ever stopped a war??

i don't recall of any, do you?

my position on war protesting: do something better with your time. nobody cares about you.

In the 80's (my youth... ) some 1 million Dutch people protested against nuclear weapons that were suppost to be placed here.

The government was shocked by the view of this enormous crowd and decided to cancel the discission

stopping the storage of nuclear warheads and nuclear waste is one thing.

im wondering the same...when has making placards -stopped- a war?

i would say no as well, tho not because im a warmongering idiot or something. i read an interesting article in Rolling Stone today discussing how the media will get blacked out in Iraq just like 91 and the Falklands war- THATS something that is scary and rediculous. Cheney insituted the policy cause supposedly protests and the media 'lost' the Vietnam War...thats shit|

a large protest will surely make a government think twice about war... and at least it shows you care enough to leave your house and spend some time supporting a worthy cause...

i can't stand it when people think passing an email around or clicking a few internet links is going to stop war or save a child with cancer.... they're all just fooling themselves into thinking they've really done something to make a difference... if you really want to help someone it's going to cost time and possibly money. and when governments see that people are willing to get off their asses and take to the streets, it makes an impact on them...

any clue on how many people have protested previous wars? and what that did? there was a whole generation dedicated to protesting the government and how well did it work against war?

I believe that a government will be more keen to listen to protesters when it's about internal affairs. But when it's something that the government believes its citizens don't know much about, they don't give two shits.

i saw somewhere there's a million person anti-war march soon. wonder what that'll do. IMO nothing.

so there are 1 million people protesting the war. When compared to the total number of people it is insigificant.

Back when there were the world wide protests there were i dont know, lets say 30 million people world wide protesting (guessing on that number). But the population of the world is 6 billion. So even there you have .5% of the world protesting the war. are you going to make your decision based on .5% of the people??

Even if it was 300 million people that would only be 5% of the people.

yeah.. i tend to agree with you... when it comes to something as big as war, its hard to back out of it as opposed to changing certain laws which can be done easily...

the bottom line is that politicians want votes... so protesting may yet be effective... either way the final descision will be based on what the country will gain trough war vs. what they will lose (votes, etc.)

Well there were protest like everywhere.. but mostly legal actions and finding weaknesses leads to change not really a mass of people just speaking out...
