Posted by JammyBee on Mar-18-2003 21:23:

What would you suggest then matey?

Posted by DJ Chrono on Mar-18-2003 21:43:

well.. if you want good quality sound, and good for DJing, check out:

Beyer DT770
Sennheiser HD25
Sony V6
Sony 7506

Get yourself a set of pioneers. They are brilliant. either them or the sennheiser hd-25 ones. Got bothe sets and they are bothe brilliant.

The sony 700's have a lot of design flaws which can shorten the life of the earphone. Like the cable always comes apart at the bit adapter bit.

Ive had a pair of the Technic DJ1210s for over a year now and they are still in perfect condition...

they sound great and don't get bass heavy like the sony v700s seem to get when you have them cranked

ive tried other headphones but i like the technics the best, especially in a club environment they're great

no problems for me at least, nor have i heard any bad things about them from anyone else..

For SURE, PIONEERS ARE THE BOMB. I've had Sony MDR V700DJ and they are no where near the quality and performance of the new PIONEERS.

PIONEER HDJ 1000

Many Pro DJs are switching to these, one of my favorites of them Christopher Lawrence did a little bit ago, 'cause they are simply the BEST....

Posted by Bryant on Mar-19-2003 07:05:

How does the PIONEER HDJ 1000 compare to the Sony 7506 (or Sony V6)?

The V6 by Sony are more of a studio headphones, and both V6 and 7506 are even worse than what I had before, the MDR V700DJ, and I sold those as soon as I tried and bought the PIONEER HDJ1000. Well worth the Extra Money. Click H E R E for the best price on them anywhere. Let them know that Daniel referred you, my friend owns that online store.
Put simply, there is nothing else on the market that comes close to the performance of PIONEER HDJ1000, unless you want to pay over $450.00 USD for Shure in ear DJ headphones:

First those are Studio Monitor Headphones and not DJ. Second they cost more than Pioneer and perform A LOT LESS look at the specs:

Senheiser HD25 retail $200.00

High maximum sound pressure level
65 .nominal impedance for universal compatibility
Tough, detachable steel cable
Frequency Response 16-22000 Hz
Neodymium ferrous magnet systems and lightweight aluminium/copper voice
coils for fast transient response.
Third, I personally think they are quite ugly.

PIONEER HDJ1000 PRO DJ

Specs:
Type: Tightly closed dynamic headphones
Frequency Range: 5 to 30,000Hz

Impedance: 40 Ohm
Maximum Input: 3,500 mW
Output Sound Level: 107 dB/mW
Unit Type: 50 mm dome
Plug: 3.5 mm 3P mini plug (gold-plated)
Weight: 9.5 oz (excluding cord)
Accessories: 06.3 mm 3P Plug adapter with screw & carrying bag
Connection cord: 3.94 ft long single coiled cable (about .84 ft when straight.
WARNING though, PIONEER headphones are very powerful, YOU WILL NEED TO TURN DOWN THE VOLUME ON YOUR MIXER BEFORE USING THEM, I almost tore my ear drums the first time I put them on, I was used to Sony 700DJ that I had before, so my mixer headphone volume was turned up, now it is only about 35% turned up.

Posted by Martin McG on Mar-19-2003 16:15:

unless your spinning out then i dont really see the need for the most expensive "DJ" headphones! what if they are "studio" headphones? does that make them crap?!

yes some are better than other granted but most of us wouldnt notice as we would only be giving them moderate use in our bedrooms, unlike DJs would give them intense use in a club!

Anyhoo, I've also heard the Pioneers. Blah! They're way overrated, IMHO. I just didn't care much for them, with extremely inaccurate, overblown bass and shrill highs. In fact, even the slightest overboost in bass ruins it for the entire 'phone, in my book.

The problem is shared with all of the other mass-market Japanese brands, as well. (Note that I didn't mention Stax in this discussion, as Stax is a highly regarded Japanese maker of higher-end electrostatic headphones, most of which are strictly for home use.) Neither Pioneer, nor Matsushita (Panasonic/Technics), nor JVC, nor Sony cared much, if at all, about proper closed-headphone design. They all use the same group of very cheap, very low quality drivers on their cheap 'phones and their expensive 'phones alike - and are careless about driver matching to the housings and to each other.

I would have to disagree with you on that. Let me ask you this, why would World's Top DJs, making $5,000.00 to $50,000.00 USD per set use as called by you cheap, low quality headphones???

Furthermore, Pionner headphones are THE most accurate DJ Headphones on the market, thus many Professional DJs Like Christopher Lawrence, Ferry Corsten, switched to Pioneers. If you had a distorted sound coming out, either you had a flaw in the headphones(shit happens) or you need to get a better mixer. Lots of my friends have already switched to Pioneers from their beloved Sonys after trying my pair, and many other friends that can't afford Pioneers, ask me to use mine if we are playing together or if I go to their event. My friend own a DJ equipment store and he can't keep Pioneers in stock, they sell out very quickly. Although this is JMO, Professional DJs, sales numbers, and lots of my friends prooved to me that I bought the best DJ headphones on the market.

TO Big Dave: you mentioned "most expensive headphones" yet the ones you recommended Seinheiser HD25 are $50.00 HIGHER in Price than PIONEERS?

Actually, what I considered "cheap, low-quality headphones" is based on their prices in Japan. You see, if you buy those same headphones in Japan, they'll cost you three to five times less $$$ over there than they do in the USA. In other words, those $160 Pioneers that I've mentioned will cost you the equivalent of only about $50 to $60 USD over there in Japan. Well, sh*t happens. Either I demoed a shyte pair of the Pioneers, or the demo rack was using a shyte amp.

On the other hand, the Sennheisers will cost you just as much $$$ over there in Japan as they do over here in the USA. So, if a particular Senn HD 25 costs $200 here, they will cost you nearly the same $200 over there, too. And in Europe, the Sonys and Pioneers are even more overpriced than they already are in the USA - while the Senns and other European makes are relative bargains over there. So, in Germany, for example, the HD 25-1 will cost you less $$$ there than the artificially inflated price of the Sony MDR-V700DJ.

firstly mate money talks! people wear certain brands cos they are getting paid to do so! not because they are superior!

and secondly it depends where you shop doesnt it?!

Posted by Gluegun on Mar-19-2003 20:00:

First of all, the MDR-V6 and MDR-7506 are way more accurate than the V700DJ, and more durable and comfy too.

Second, the Pioneer ones are good DJ headphones, as are the Technics -- good for what they are. If you want something more accurate or studio-ish, try the Sennheiser HD25 or the Sony MDR-V6.

Also, ignore frequency range specs. They are almost always lies. Unless you have a GRAPH of frequency range, the specs dont mean squat.

That's exactly what I was going to say. Never judge a headphone based on their "frequency range". Do you think a headphone will sound better because it is 5 - 30,000Hz? Well it wont. For one thing below 20 Hz is generally unnoticable. Most songs only pound down to the low 30's - mid 20's anyways. What good will a rated 5 Hz do? Nothing. This goes the same for the hi frequencies. over 20,000 is practically unnoticable. Songs peak around 20,000 max, usually more around 17-18,000. what is 30,000Hz going to do? Nothing. The human ear can't even pick up these frequencies, even if they were in songs.

pioneer's look like crap and sound like it too (the pair I demoed, anyhow...the pics you got look pretty nice, the one I listened was black), in my opinion...I personally like the V-6...v-700 and pioneers sound similar, big heavy midbasses...don't really really like it, personally.

How does the Pioneer 1000 stand in a club environment? What is the best headphone to use in a club setting?
