.::: TOTA Job Search Thread ::.

Finding a good job can be one of the most difficult "jobs" for people. Lets start a mass resource thread for all the unemployed TAs (and employed for that matter) looking a new job.

If you come across news of job fairs, job postings, work links or miscellaneous information please post! The more resources available the better.

Any TAs who do have a job and can help out by posting job oppotunities at their workplace will also be helpful.

-------------------------------

Here's a couple tips:

1. Next thursday there is a job fair at the metro convetion centre. (Wil post more info once i get the flyer)

2. For students here is a tip: The TTC hires students for summer jobs that are easy and pay pretty well. Send an email to Miriam at [email protected] explaining that you are a college/universty student looking for employment.

Well, since this war started, my place isn't hiring AT ALL. Which is weird, cause usually they have a peice of paper posted with even like 1 position that they may need to fill. Once things pick up again, I'm sure the "Job Openings" sheet will appear again and I'll post it on here

By the way, I work at Marriott Hotel right beside Eaton's Centre.

What's the difference between a woman and a walrus?

One of them has whiskers & blubber, and the other one is a walrus.

www.workopolis.com did the trick for some friends of mine as far as jobs are concerned.

well, different full-time and part-time jobs; anything from Front Desk attendant, to housekeeping, to banquets, restaurants or kitchen (either cook, or a person to clean dishes). Contract jobs were there as well.

i can't sign up on workopolis until i get some stupid ID number from my school, and I can't get that until my school picks up the damn phone!

finding a summer job is such a hassle

Im not sure if they've done the hiring or not, but the Metro Toronto Zoo always highers tons of people around this time. Its just a one day mass hiring day where you fill out an application and get interviewed on the spot. I went last year I didn't get the job I wanted because I had no customer service experience and I refused to work at a food place there

But my gf and a friend of mine worked there and they said the money was really good...you get tons of shifts. My gf made something like $3000 - 4000 from working weekends from april - june, then full time july - august.

Posted by OrZonE on Mar-22-2003 05:24:

well, Wonderland is always hiring.
Now, if you haven't worked there - this is a once in a lifetime thing that everyone should do. The work itself pretty much sucks, but the perks are good. Free access, free tix, "free" food no line up for ANY ride. But dear god help you if someone throws up...

I've never been there myself, but you can try having a look at www.employmentnews.com. They've also got a free newspaper in 5 editions that can be found just about anywhere (on the streets, in stores, etc.) and comes every Sunday.

Here are some employment resource centres featured in there that might help you:

Two more things:
-Discount Car and Truck Rentals has positions for F/T Car Jockey in East Mississauga, Etobicoke, and East York.

-Black's Photography is looking for F/T and P/T Sales Associates at the Colossus Centre in Woodbridge.

(PM me for further details, or just ask me to post it on here, if anyone is interested.)

All of which reminds me that I'm off to work shortly...

Don't bother going to that place. It is close to my house and they offer you NO HELP AT ALL. The gave me a bunch oif numbers to call, half of them not even beingin service. Also half the staff does not speak English too well.

Isn't there any place where u can go that help u find a new/better jobs that really does not ask much from you? ie. Experience n shit?

Look for a job in another market?

And yeah, Workopolis and Monster are shit sites when it comes to finding solid jobs if you don't have any experience or not enough of it. The entry positions that require some or no experience at all either pay like $6.85/hr or get ten thousand applications so your chances of getting through are like winning a lottery. While those other positions require you to have a degree and a few years of experience before they will even read your resume, so some of us without a degree (yet) are just stuck in the middle!

So, what do you do? You either lie on your resume or go start up your own business and get some experience that way... and then re-apply for those jobs 3-4 years later.

Arrow

Ah, how could I forget? There's always the HRDC Job Bank. ::Job Bank - Ontario:: I have family and friends who have used it and had good results. There are jobs of pretty much any level, including those that require no experience. It's a good tool indeed.

I have never used these myself, but you can also try www.hotjobs.ca and www.workwanted.ca.

Yup I did that, I started my own business, although its slow I got my first client, did some work for her, but its not enough work to make some decent cash now, hopefully this is how I'll get more clients(you do a good job someone then they will refer you to anohter person and so on)...I HOPE THIS WILL BE THE CASE

I've learned first hand that networking and word of mouth are a great combination and go a long way in increasing your clientelle. The two, especially the latter one, have played a huge role in providing me with work. Hopefully that client of yours will spread the word about the work you've done for her.

Those sites are crap. Unless you want to hassle applying for a job that 1000 other people have applied for.

If anybody wants a summer job and they live in Missisauga and have their own transportation to work (near Clarkson Go-Station) I can refer you to a job I did a while back it paid $15 to $20 per hour (at least it did 5 years ago). The job is outdoors, but not doing hard labour (although it will require a little bit of effort/organization). The owner of the company likes me (I still talk to him) and as long as you don't screw up my reputation and piss my friend/old boss off - you could get a job starting in May.

PM me if you want info on this. BTW - you have to show up by 7AM (monday to friday) and you'll end by 4pm (at the latest) every day.
