Best transitions in the set

I think everyone of us sometimes notice how DJ can put one song of the set into another, and you like "..OMG only god knows these song belong each other, how can he do that?". I think this must be the most powerfull skill of a DJ to know how and what tracks he must mix in his set in right order.

So my best transitions are (these are on my mind, i think i`ll remember more, lot more):

1. Tiesto @ Dutch Dimension 2001
transition from Gouryella - Gouryella to Green Martian - Wizardry.

2. Gabriel and Dresden - Global DJ Broadcast 06-01-2003
transition from Ivy - lets go to bed (SKDD remix) to JXL - Tennis.

3. Paul van Dyk - Innercity 30-12-2000
transition from Taiko - Uno, Dos...(Nick Sentience remix) to Alibi - eternity

What yours?

It's not skill, it's just that they attempt to mix the song with any song and just pick out the best transition. Every DJ ranging from Amatuer to Professional does this.

I can`t agree. Only professional knows what track will mix best to the song is playing on the decks, if you`d be right everyone can be profy.

I can't agree with you there too, Professional DJs get stuff we can't get hold of so they have a variety to try with before playing rather that us playing it with tracks that we've been playing for ages.

Ok, so i see there are no best transitions on your mind then.

Posted by jc on Mar-24-2003 09:57:

of course its a skill! you can't mix any track into any track, well you can but if you want that perfect transition you need to mix in key
most pro DJs DEFINATELY don't just pull out any 2 tracks and mix them

Posted by Psygnosis on Mar-24-2003 09:59:

Well i do know very good transitions but you can't say that it's a skill that the DJ does this...THE skill comes down to if the DJ can BPM the track right and to CUE the track right.

I'll name some later.

what a load of bullshit
any tom dick and harry can do this with practise - this is probably the easiest part of mixing

the most skilled is mixing in key, go read up on it

Posted by DJ M.G on Mar-24-2003 10:13:

i agree anyone can do this with lots of practise,
you just have to play a track and think what track will fit in perfectly next. Yeah key clashes sound horrible, it throws you off.

i dont know what some of you are thinking
if you practice and you can beat match, then it is no problem to pull off the exact same transfer as dj tiesto does, if not better, i have done loads of mixes which have good, if not excellent transfers in them. professionals are not the only ones who can do it, beside, the only reason they spin up there that big is because of their productions and shit, many bedroom djs have equal skills to tiesto or other djs, its just, who needs another dj when there are already so many that can do the same shit.

DITTO!
This is my favorite live trance moment of all time.

Tiesto Revolution cd2 was off the hook!!! The whole cd is so well done that i don't think there's any bad transition at all everything fits so perfectly... another one is paul van dyk essential selection hot mix couple of years ago... 30 mins of non stop vandit tunes top mixing with crowds getting all mad in the background..the whole 30 mins was so well put together.. it's amazing!!

I have to agree/ because i try to do that at home and it doesnt work. I mean not all songs go together, at the same time its more trial and error than skill i think. As said earlier they have a lot more tracks and what not and have more tracks that conincide with each other rather than we the amatuer who buys what they like and try to make it work. On the other note i like almost any transistion that sounds like a breakbeat, here are some.

Paul Van Dyk - Politics of Dancing, Ashtrax - Digital Reason (Filterheads Mix) to Joker Jam - Innocence (PvD POD Mix

Gabriel & Dresden - EM 03/09/03 Attention Defecit - Use Only The Drugs (Original Mix) to James Talk - Eggs Are Cute (Re-Percussion Mix)

Gabriel & Dresden - EM 03/09/03 James Talk - Eggs Are Cute (Re-Percussion Mix) to Gabriel & Dresden - I Can or (something like that)

Gabriel & Dresden - EM 03/09/03 Steve Porter - Bubble Bath to Der Dritte Raum - Hale Bopp

Really that whole mix has so many of those types of transistionsots not even funny, i guess as u can tell i love that mix!!

Some Classic Transistions

Paul Oakenfold Live @ Space From Ibiza

Blondie - Nothing Is Real to Number 4 I.D.

Jan Johnston - Skydive to Natious - Amber (Lightning Mix)

I.D. - Saucermen - Aquarius (Evolution Mix)

The Source - Fly Away to Der Dritte Raum - Hale Bopp

Totally agree. Any bedroom DJ can do a more than decent transition with his eyes closed. Key clashes and how to identify them isn't a tough skill to learn as well, in any case I've heard so many instances of supposed big-name DJs screw up their mixes with terrible track selections, pairing up records with keys that totally clash. What sets them apart from the rest will only be their remixing and production talents. If you're a great producer, almost always you'll be regarded as a great DJ. It doersn't work the other way, though.

I agree in some ways, no while i dont know exactly there are things that set Pro-Dj's from amatuers. They are use more complicated equipment. Theyre doing mixes that are more complicated in genreal. I mean their doin something thats why theyre professional. I dunno its hard to explain.

Posted by Jocker on Mar-26-2003 17:38:

it just comes to practice...
before the set, i play quickly all the records i wanna spin, and hear which tracks go in the same key (it takes practice, but it's quite easy to hear)... after that it's just a matter of remembering which tracks mix well with each other.

Mixing two records isn't exactly rocket science. I don't need to answer further as it's already been done... take a minute and read the thread.
