-- recording software...

Hello! recording software...

which software do u guys recommend for recording from mixer to PC?

I prefer being able to record in mp3... don't know which softwares have this...

thankx ppl...

I never tried recording into .mp3, but I've heard you lose quality going directly to .mp3. Your best bet is to record in .wav and then convert. Most recording programs have their own built in recorder. I personally use SoundForge.

Has a lot of extra gadgets with it, but I find myself just using it to record, whenever I mess with the other stuff it just makes the mix sound worse. =p

I tried using Sound Forge back at version 4, but found it really didn't record reliably over the hour mark (quite important when doing mix CDs )

Now I always record using Total Recorder which has never let me down. I think it can record straight to mp3 too, but I've never tried that.

Dunno much about mp3 encoding really... does on-the-fly encoding really sound worse? I guess unless you've got a really nice machine you won't be able to encode much above 128kbs in real-time though?

hmm.. thanks ppl.

I've heard of Total Recorder, but never used it. I think I'll try it...

Hey Werewolf,

I'm also a big fan of Total Recorder. It's a reliable program. Somethin' like $11 if I can remember correctly to get the registered version. I use it to record all of my mixes.

I use musicmatch jukebox and encode straight to mp3 @ 192Kbps. Never had any problems always solid encoding and quality.

downloading now

it's nice to be able to record your mixes... I couldn't do it beacuse of Dells buggy audio drivers. now that I fixed the problem, it's time to mix

I have another question ppl...

while recording with Total Recorder (mixer to PC), do you use Total Recorders audio dirvers or your sound cards original ones?

I think TRs drivers are only required for recording from internet or other software...

ay wsup guys...

check it.. i have the soundblaster audigy platinum, so i use the rca's in front of it to rec my mixes...

but i was wonderin what you guys use to split ur mix..
ive read throughout the threads that alot of ppl use music cutter..thats what i use... butttt

when i playback, i can hear the splice between tracks... no biggy, cuz its kinda hard to hear... but it would be nice not to hear n e thing at all... so if n e one knows a prog that can split mixes flawlessly, hit me up

thanks

i record mixes into steinberg wavelab, cut & master using a few choice 3rd party plugins...it can also encode to mp3 & a host of other lesser-known compressed audio-file formats

that wasnt due to sound forge, it is due to the system you were on. an 80-minute mix in .wav format takes up around 700 meg of disk space. i had a computer that as soon as the ram was filled w/ music, it would start to skip. it wasnt sf's fault, it was my crappy computer.

anywayz, SF is up to version 6.0 and is great. if you have ultra-ata drives, it saves really fast. as for cutting and what not, it is ungodly simple to cut it up w/ thier markers and regions. if you have the mp3 plugin (pretty easy to find), you can encode right to .mp3. & since it uses std. dx plugins, you can do the pseudo-mastering that lexiconavenue was talking about (my friend actually does professional mastering, and there is no way a plug-in can replace the work he does!)

note: you dont want to save your mix to .mp3 format if you are planning on giving this out in cd form. .mp3 format will compress your highs and lows and make them sound bad at high volumn. if you are in a cruntch for space, save it as a .wav, burn your cd, then re-save it as a .mp3, that way, you will always have a copy of it in .wav format, and can always re-burn your cd.

if i am making a demo cd to hand out, my usual way of processing is...
+ Mix -> Sound Forge 6.0
+ .wav file -> Cool Edit 2.0 for De-Noise
+ .wav file -> SF 6.0 for pseudo-mastering
(equal levels, BBE plugin, warmth)
+ then i mark out every track brake w/ markers
(including the beginning of the mix & end)
+ then i use their tool to conver markers to regions
+ then i extract the regious (useing there tool) and that
saves 1 .wav file for each track
+ then i open Nero and move the tracks in there & burn

...hope this helps a bit

I've noticed that too, but it only does it when I burn a cd direct from mp3 files of any quality. If I use .wav files it's always clean sounding so it's become my method of operating.
