pvd - perth review
after reading the reviews from the adel/melb events i was really lookin forward to this, that and the fact that the last 3 times i have seen him have been absolutely amazing..
but...
i havent been this disappointed in a long time!
paul was sloppy, uninterested in the crowd/music and his mixing was some of the worst i've heard.
dont think i could count more than 5 mixes which were decent, he really just looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there.
the set had no real flow to it.. started off ok, then just went downhill into a very boring set.. finally finishing up with a few crowd fav's.
he played a few nice tunes in there.. but the vibe was lacking. wasnt as packed as i thought it would be either.. which in a way was good cos you had room to move.
met up with a couple of ta's forgot which ones though, apart from calis
what did everyone else think?
i didnt even make it, i got stuck into a bottle a bit too hard and got hammered
ive heard no laser, and powercuts and that his last hour and a half sucked.
yeah they didnt use the laser at all.. even though they said they would
there were a couple of power cuts... nothing major but enough to cut the decks / lighting etc etc
pvd did not look very happy at all
hmm...so is that mean "yay for me for not going..??"
well to be honest...I didn't get hyped up for this PvD incoming because I've had bad experiance with PvD's in Perth, notable last year's globe and the year before's rise.
He does not have any interest in the crowd whatsoever, which annoys me a lot, so yeah I like his music but I think it's not worthy to spend $40 ticket to see him play...
bring on armin, tiesto, gielen, junkie XL or anyone else infact, but him

man, sorry to hear :/
escee looks like he got the better deal
Sounds sucky.
I thought Paul van Dyk was good last time he came to Perth. At least the vibe at the Globe was pretty intense..
Perhaps Metro's is to big a venue for a single act like PvD?
Copyed from ITM forums
Also just for the record the laser died this arvo so that won't happen tonight apologies. A fried part that couldn't be replaced was the culprit. Sorry.
Was really looking forward to seeing PVD as he was great when i seen him last year, He started off with a few great tracks then started to get more progressive overall i wasnt really impressed there were a few good moments but they were few and far between
He interacted with the crowd very little but heaps more then he did when i seen him at Home last year.
ah poor impressional escee, lead in a booze filled rage to the bottom of the bottle, i met bob and he told me about your raging antics but then i lost him and couldnt find him again :/// AHHHH
i couldnt agree more, fair enough he was playing what he likes or whatever but... a little of the paul van dyk we know and love, wouldnt have hurt... few power cuts... i dont think he was as unintrested as lanithium suggests, just more doing his thing than what the crowd wanted... power cuts were to be expected, i shit you not this was the worst weather i have ever seen (let alone driving in to northbridge :///) in a long time... overall
VERDICT : overall you know i felt it was a alright set, just not the paul van dyk everyone knows.
but he did start of well, and his last half hour was good too
some tracks i remember were
Klea - tic toc (Me and my friend felt the night was almost made up for just cause he played this!
i really wanted to hear it!)
Tiesto - Obsession (remix? filterheadz?)
Circ - Destroy She Said (destroy she said my blah), shut the fuck up.
Solid Sleep - Club Attack (polotics of dancing remix)
Dark Monks - Insane (steve marano dub)
Solar Stone - Solar Coaster (Midway Remix)
Robert Miles - Children (some remix)
Paul van Dyk - Nothing but you...(TWICE i might add, a manouver im not too fond off.)
Paul van Dyk - For an Angel
his track with jan johnston? cause i heard her vocals and his bassline... but i dunno the name...
John Askew - Another Dimension <--- great track
umm
ooo and how could i forget, at the very start he dropped forbidden fruit! the original! that was really cool.
EDIT : i just realised, i had a pretty cool part on that night too and i was having a great time before i left for paul van dyk, and i suppose to measure the night, in heinsight i would have rather stayed at the party. so niel dont feel bad. and everyone else perth wasnt that crash hot :P
EDIT : AGAIN! : i do think however paul van dyk enjoyed himself, if you guys see videos of him or anything like that, thats just how he is hes just pretty focussed behind the decks and you can tell he was enjoying from the few hip movements, and the odd smile and wave, if he wasnt he would have NEVER done those things... ahh just my 2c
i reckon PVD sucks i saw him once at the RISE a few years back and it was boring. So never see him again.( not really into his sound)
mmm, the night was what i expected it to be. a hodge podge of unstructured music.
he pulled out some great tunes (solarcoaster, chakra 2 doors, children, another dimension) that if properly structured and mixed would have sounded great, but he was what i call 'karoake djing' ..putting one song on, then another, and not even letting some of the better tracks play an appropriate length. i won't even go into his many subtle (and a few obvious) fuckups (i remember exchanging looks with lanithium over one of the obvious ones).
some friends had to rush off to the hospital because another friend had been randomly knocked out by some aboriginal wanker when walking past the paramount, so they missed the last 90 mins of pvd ...i simply told them that they didn't miss anything exciting at all.
oh vell, all dj's can't be as good as armin
was great to meetup with lanithium and his girl ruth, and i think i met jah in a quite mashed state. my mind at the time was going 'this is silly, i know this track ..its uum, fark what was it again, i know its the midway remix' but had a complete mental blank as to what it was. so i approached the group that looked like the blue shirt TA'ers and asked.
well, overall i hope you all had a good night out, cos even though the dj'ing wasn't on par i still had a great night with friends.
ps. add chakra - 2 doors to the list. was a highlight of my night.
also i'm pretty sure it was the dream remix of children.
well i thought it was bloody awesome!

Hi guys, new to the au.ta part of the forum.
I thought it was an excellent night.
Set wise I though pvd played a rather varied selection of tunes, some were familiar others not - this is one reason why I enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed the stuff he was playing from about 4-5. It was great to hear a bit of trance bordering on psy!
Im guessign it was maybe a bit dark for most of the crowd - and unexpected to some others who were maybe expecting more of a typical pvd set.
A few spots that havent already been mentioned
Hydra - Affinity
Hemstock & Jennings - Zulu (not sure which mix)
Robert Lidstroem - Recitation (Misja Helsloot Remix)
The crowd amosphere was good - and also not being packed in like sardines was a bonus.
The downside of the night was the fucking weather - which im guessing was the main source of the annoying power cuts to the decks. There also was too many gurners running around with no shirts on!!
On a more sarcastic note big thumbs up to Metros for cutting power to the decks at the end of the night bang on 6 again. I think the DJ should at least be given notice before they cut them off.
If I remember correctly I think I might have bumped into a mark (sorry cant remember you ta alias).

| Originally posted by Tak same here, and I'm not even a big fan of PvD's own stuff. I thought the mixing was easily up to par, I was watching his style alot and only heard 1 or 2 fuckups. His crowd interaction is never very good, he likes to concentrate on the tunes, but i still think he was having a good time. I will admit but that at around the 2h mark it fell a bit flat for quite awhile. |
