Direct Connect blocked

Alright, threads about Direct Connect and the Hub might be a little annoying, but I still have a question.
I signed up on the EMC page, downloaded Direct Connect and veryfied my nick. Everything cool until I try to connect: it doesn't. The reason is that my college blocked ALL p2p and I can't use any of them. My question is: can I connect to the hub without connecting or using direct connect? Can I still use it?

nope, to blobk the ports these p2p programs use is quite easy, and even if you did manage to work a way around the blocks the techs would notice the high amount of trafic coming from your account and get you anyway

heh, not true, coz i doubt the monitor bandwith. Most college teachers kill the connections downloading porn anyways, heh and warez

Anyway the only way to do it is by connecting to a proxy server, but as u wont know the proxy detials, well thats impossible. Get friendly with one of the admins, and then use one of their comps

Damn, well, they don't care about bandwidth that much, as long as u don't upload more than 4.5gb a day. I got caught getting around Kazaa and they didnt like it, they shut me off for a few hours.

Looks like I'm gonna have to continue using Mirc to download my shit, anyone know any good channels???

Yeah I have this same problem as well. When I found a workaround for kazaa the sysadmin didnt like me too much =(. But oh well, I finally realized what they do - port blocking and packet sniffing. If you do everything with encryption and you use non-p2p ports you should be fine, it's worked for me. Still though, you don't wanna be sending/receiving so much shit that they notice you

How do u encript it? They don't really care about sending that much as long as its not over 4.5gb/day. I do it on irc all the time

Well encryption is really a 2-way street, I mean you COULD encrypt the data coming from your computer, but if the other person doesn't have the key, then they're gonna have a hard time reading what you sent them, especially if they have no knowledge of cryptography. In addition, even though you can encrypt what you send, when receiving files through, say, kazaa, they won't be encrypted, and your school WILL be able to see what you're receiving. So herein lies the problem I faced - the encryption would only go one way, and even then it would serve of no use to me (you can't even connect to the kazaa network if you encrypt your outgoing packets, as the kazaa nodes aren't equipped to decrypt anything). So I looked for clients that use secure p2p software, and came across this site and this site , both of which do full encryption, and both of which allow me to make full, unchecked use of my school's bandwidth . When you set up your client(s), make sure you don't use the default p2p port (1214 I think, at least that's DC++'s default port), because they might do port blocking or packet-shaping based on port numbers.
