Sure-fire way to tell trance apart from house?

Is there a sure-fire way to tell trance apart from house? In most cases, i can tell them apart easily, but there are songs that seem to fall somewhere inbetween, and those are the ones i'm having trouble with. Any suggestions?

Actually some of my favorite music is the music that sounds like a cross between the two. It's a really cool sound. If you want to get a feel for what I'm talking about, download stuff by Three N One and 29 Palms.

But yeah, house music is funkier, and can conatain instruments like saxes and trumpets, which trance usually doesn't. It's also slower, and more about the groove of the track than the melody (Though the melody in house is still important). Generally, house has chunkier basslines as well.

BPM wise, house usually ranges between 120-130, but acid House (I.E. Carl Cox) can get up to 140 and above, but that's an exception.

was just gonna say -- you just KNOW by listening to both. There are tracks that can be categorized in both, but most of the time they are easily recognizable.

In all seriousness though, some house music can be pretty good. Don't like that disco-ey, diva stuff though - I'm sure we all agree there - but so long as it has a toughish beat, there aren't many better genres to dance to. You can tell a housey beat from the BPM (relatively laid-back and chuggy) and the way the beat's structured - could be imagining things, but look out for a high-hat/snare on the second and fourth beats in each bar, because I find that's a usually housey trait. Also, look out for funky guitar rifts. They're usually a dead give-away.

If you look at who I was quoting, the 2 genre are to close to say "everyone has liked Trance at one point" and then not think that also relates to House. Most electronic sites are all house and DnB. Trance is by far one of the smallest genre around right now. Trance was a sub genre of house.

You guys are half retarded if you think Trance is better then house. They both serve thier purpose, they are both good, and people like both. A a lot of people will spin house if they spin trance, and will spin trance if they spin house.

Who the hell wants to go to a party and out of 2 hours of music have to sit through 20 breakdowns??? You can't say one is better then the other.

house is a little slower, and usually uses musical sounds from "real" instruments, mainly from brass and string section. House centres around the Bassline, from which everything takes shape. The melody is usually a loop of one simple melody rather than an elaborate one like trance's. I liken house to prog in a way, as it is a bit more easier to dance too without going all out energetic. I would recommend house to dance too as a warm up or in the middle of the morning. House also sounds (I think) sexier, and its all good with lots of women round! Haven't u lot seen the Lynx Pulse Advert?!
