Angry DEMF= Disappointing once again :(

arrghhh...whoever is organizing this thing really needs to lay off the hard house, house, hip-hop theme. It was cool to see the crappy city of Detroit actually showing some life but I see 2 problems with this. 1) 85% of the people there are all under the age of 20 and are more about doing drugs and dressing freaky rather than going for the music having fun and then going to the clubs after to pump money into the city and having more fun (So basically the city will be dead next weekend) and 2) There were absolutely NO Trance dj's there!! I want to hear stuff that Tiesto, Armin, Oakenfold, Jules, PvD spins...enough house jeez!! Although I have to say that Aquaviva at Motor on Sunday played a great set!! If anyone lives in/around Detroit, any idea why we have no Trance clubs but we have tons of house stuff???? Just makes no sense that it all started here and now it's all in the Netherlands Sigh..I really need to go to Ibiza

Don't get me wrong guys, I'm not against drugs, I've done my fair share, but it just seems like a lot of these young people only dress wierd and do drugs just for the sake of being different...which is almost as bad as being the same don't you think?

umm ... as opposed to ... let's see ... every other rave?

You can't go to a party expecting a club atmospehre (or vice versa for that matter). I personally would have killed to be able to go and see some of the acts they brought out - and all that for FREE ! And then there's people complaining about it ... hmm.

umm..I honestly hope you are kidding. That line up was nothing special at all. Acquaviva was the only one worth going to see...

Posted by skywarp on Jun-01-2001 05:28:

Umm yeah.

Derrick May
Juan Atkins
Carl Cox
Kid Koala
Mix Master Mike

Just to list a few.
Umm they're all totaly anonymous DJs ...
That were merely the founding fathers of electronic music in North America.
If nothing then show some respect towards them. If it wasn't for them you'd be listening to Britney Spears now.

ok..point taken, I'll give them respect. But they do not spin Trance at all, it's mostly hip-hop electronica and/or house. The energy just isn't there...at least for me... If they keep having dj's like that come around then we will NEVER get the likes of Tiesto/AVB/PVD/JJ/SL to come around here, it's a shame really

Very true. I too am from the Detroit area (Ann Arbor actually). I attended DEMF the first day when it started off. I spent like 5 or 6 hours there with friends and then called it a day. I thought the festival was pretty cool, but it wasn't something I'd exactly travel for. Of course, to be honest, it's not really my type of music (obviously, re: no trance), but what can we expect? Detroit was one of the birthplaces of techno, and Chicago was one of the birthplaces of house. That pretty much sums up the musical tastes of everyone in the Midwest. I went to Motor on both Saturday and Sunday nights and had alot more fun there than at the Festival. You're right, Aquaviva was an absolute blast on Sunday night. I didn't hit the festival on Sunday due to rain, and I skipped it on Monday because of lack of sleep from the previous three days. I still thought it was cool to see that many people enjoying electronica though. Plus, the guys hanging out in the center playing chess were great .

Boo!

DEMF was not disappointing... Just cuz its not your style of music does not give you the liberty to bash it and anyone who wanted to go or actually liked it... Yes there was no trance there... But the promoters never advertised that there would be... They made no efforts to deceive you into thinking that there would be trance there...
Besides, how do you expect them to get such a big name as Oakenfold/PVD/Armin at an event that is FREE??? Ah well, I don't mean this to sound like I'm flaming anyone, just try to keep an open mind about electronic music...
Plus I'm having a shitty day at work, and I needed to vent a little...

That's bulls**t. The problem with the Midwest is that most peeps don't know when to move on. I'm sick to death of everyone bowing down and 'laying respect' to the house/techno founders. I love them, but they've had their time and day. It's approaching 20 years for some of them, and there is a large population who's into things like trance and breaks. People don't speak up, since the masters show no respect for nu school ideas, then use their history as defense, even before we speak.

Most of it hasn't moved forward an inch for ten years, and that's no fun for me. I'm just a little fed up with how oblivious some of the scene is to the rest of the world...
