Um, I've been wondering: what exactly is the differrence between house, trance, and rave? I just know the main guidelines, but what is it that you can hear in either kind to tell it apart form the other two?

Trance :
Is usually defined by melodic synth lines and a 'floaty' and 'spacey' feel to it ... also intense buildups and breakdowns are a common element of trance ... I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about =).

Rave:
Very rare nowadays, sounds like something in between jungle and happy hardcore - piano riffs, breakbeats, female vocals ... usually harder than trance.

House
Sounds a little like modernised disco music, features a steady kickdrum and repeating basslines ... kind of "clubby" sound, also quite often containing funky elements. Usually less energetic and slower than trance.

I dunno I used to argue with peeps about them bunching "rave" music with anything that's electronic, especially trance and drum n bass.. but there is a genre called rave apparently, it's old skool stuff and I'm not too familiar with it..so can someone who knows it please explain???

Err thanx skywarp I just read your post after I posted, anyways, I can't imagine happyhardcore and jungle mixed together!!! hehe.. from stuff I heard that are considered "rave" it does sound like an unusual mix of different genres...

I actually listened to this genre dubbed 'rave'. It's basically the product of a backseat affair by Happy Hardcore & Trance. Of course, they don't always follow the rules but you can tell what it is after a few exposures. One good example of 'rave' would be Dune. Especially their older stuff... how nostalgic.

Raver's Nature also (used to) play rave ... or check out some RealAudio mixtapes on http://djsets.hyperreal.org ... the old ones are kicking - 1992 - DJ Mars for example ...

Generally it's pretty hard to differentiate electronic music styles like goa and psytrance for instance. Even the DJs who play tracks A LOT and producers who compose have difficulties in finding the "correct" genre and therefore people mix the terms ending up with trancecore, hard house, nu nrg, dark ambient etc. Anyway, the site link above clarifies the genre definitions with some good examples and I agree to that for the most part. Take a peek @ it, but a word of warning; I just hate people who try to boast with their extensive knowledge about electronic music genres/djs/songs or whatever and dook down to those who don't know every producer etc in the world. That's just lame. Anyway, it's good to know some background info and use the terms others use.

It's all about the music.

PS. In my opinion there is no such genre as "rave". To quote: "By 89/90 house parties moved into warehouses. Energy flowed into the music, talc powder covered the floor, and ecstasy really kicked off and the term 'rave' (yep, THAT word) became the standard name of all large scale events as well as the music that was represented at them."

Dood, I'd have to disagree that there's no such thing as "Rave" style ... just to quote some of your source :

This basically states that we can argue a thousand years whether there is such genre or not. Personally I don't care and to me that word describes the society in general (rave society = all tranceaddicts, psyfans etc who go to big parties) and rave music is a general word for all kinds of music played at such parties. Thus, trance, psytrance, progressive, ambient, hard house etc. are all rave music to me.

Early Prodigy stuff and Raver's Nature (Hands Up Ravers is pretty cool btw) could be categorized as techno with somewhat more intensive beats etc. but rave is just as good definition here I guess.

But to sum it up, who cares what people call it if the music gives you good vibes. =)

Ok i'll try again as this bomb first time..

Hardhouse is the new RAVE.... If you feal that Rave is one and not what people used to say.. i.e iam going to a rave.. as most of the music now (trance, Hardhouse etc) start off there... It was just underground... Rave to me is the old skool stuff like Happy hardcore and hardcore etc.. with Mc's backing up a set....
