Back in 1990 i knew exactly what tracks i wanted to write, electronic dance!

Studios were expensive then but i was lucky to be working in one which allowed me to compose my first demo and submit it to my local DJ who played it out to test it on the crowd.....

when i bumped into a guy (Tony de Vit)who i ended up helping to create what we now call hard house, i thought i was in heaven (not the club!) and we wondered how the club scene was going to evolve.

Well, now we now know....on its arse.......but at least when the cobwebs are clear, a new scene will evolve!

Yes, we are swamped with everyone and their PC generated material, low quality vinyl and more MP3's than we can throw a stick at, but quality will always shine through!

There is now no excuse for a poor demo, bad quality recordings or any unwanted noise.......but the actual content is what counts, and this needs at least some musical talent to work!

With so many different genres of music now, we are spoilt, but has this watered the industry down? Should we just stick to main genres like pop, dance, reggae, soul, county etc..?

What happens to the tracks which have a bit of each of the new styles in them.....dont get heard or do we create another genre?

I still stick with a track is a track and a reflection of my mood......not what someone tells me how it should fit into a certain catagory so it gets heard!

I hate pigeon holein and catagories........but will this expell me from the music industry?

you bring up many good points... but the fact is the following is bigger than ever. We're almost like a cult, and i doubt anything is going to persuade us away from this music.

well..i have to agree with some of what your saying. i do think there is a lack of musical talent nowadays. there don't seem to be any new producers that will be able to replace the time-tested veterans of the game as really dominant players...

I know everybody isnt going to agree with my points, but this statement was from the heart and how i feel about the industry as it is now...

I got into music even changing my career from electronics and computers, university etc to do something that felt good and passionate without a thought about money or how i was going to survive financially.

When money did come along, i thought 'Bonus!' but even with my business and music associates, money destroyed our passion.

Then i watched other business men abuse the industry and ruin other fellow talented musicians and producers...........and i am sorry, but DJ's jumped on this band wagon too, demanding more and more higher fees............until the bubble burst! Then all lost out....This being within the UK though!

The US i find different, as there is more scope, more population, more finance! And it seems that the US is just picking up on the trance, hard house side and i hope, learns from the UK's downfall.

In the UK, we need to start again which is going to take a while, but even though i have been disheartened with the industry for many months with no 'passion' at the moment to open my studio door, i feel a new breath of fresh air wafting in from the US which, together with broadband technology and the net, re-start the old creative juices flowing again!

I want to get that dancefloor melodic enegy going again....with a second chance!

Well, sjp1... thanks for sharing your stories. I think you will always offend someone -- heck, Kermit the frog gets some religious types crazy ("A talking... FROG??? Must be the work of the evil one...") -- but you came off to me as really nice about it and I just appreciate hearing stories like this, about going through life with dance culture, and yes, the changing times. Empires rise and fall... humans die... but ideas live on.

I myself am not opposed to commercialism if it goes hand in hand with the music I enjoy -- it's only when it becomes an "OR" thing instead of an "AND" thing, that's when I don't like it. You have experience with this, I'm sure... ahhh... the dilemma that is the bandwagon. It's a double-edged sword... if you copy, you get blamed. If you come up with something new, you'll get flamed for that too and maybe looked at as a "dance heretic" until your new style or whatever it is you're with hits it massive. Quite an interesting phenomenon but it's tough on a lot of people's lives. Takes its toll on producers/DJs and clubbers/audience alike.

i really have a lot of respect for the guys out there that started at the begining. they always seem to have good taste. the classic example is grimreaper. he's got a ton of records, he's always nice to everyone and doesn't get caught up in all the bullshit of artists...he just loves the music. same goes for like aloep too hehehe...

anyway, you should come to the US and more correctly colorado. i want to play in your studio and help you recapture the sound of old. that's definitely what i want to do. you gotta take the as you said melodic energy of old and apply it in new ways...god i got to get in a pro studio...the industry needs it

Not another moan, but observation iwish to share (yep, the industry can make you a little bitter, as all things you are passionate about, you protect it and hate it!....anyway, the ol tools of the trade, now being as little as a PC and a keyboard....I remember the once, a nameless DJ with a load of cash asking for advice on a load of computer gear & external music equipment as so to setup a home recording studio...........then sell it all as it didnt produce him a track??!!

What can you say to that? That summed up where the industry was going! Trance......a remember when the Access Virus came out and thought nothing of it, now it has become like a TB303 of the Acid world! At least with the TB303, which only had one sound, you could forgive people sounding the same. but the Virus, no excuse for using just the presets, also a bit like using the Korg M1 piano on a house track......oh well, gone off the beaten track agin!

I know its a bit sad that when i track is played to me, i can name the preset of the instrument used and the model! But that is how passionate or should i say, geeky i am about music!

Tools of the trade...ah, yes, press a button and go......example of technology taking over.....when was the last time you came across a piece of wood with strings (4 or 6 to be exact)and made it sound amazing! I think the names of this wood is guitar or violin, never i hear you say! not like Acid pro 4 and a PC eh?

Im not knocking the use of samples, but its the constructive use of samples together with YOUR own sounds, yeh, we all remember the beats breaks and scratch records, even i used them on occasion, but only as a track filler, not the be all and end all of the track!

C'mon guys, get them creative juices flowing, connect that old Korg M1 through an effects umit & filter, reverse it, gate it and play it! Get them new Riffs out!

I love technology as a tool, just like i value a cordless drill.....great tool the drill, but it wont put the screw in the wall on its own and can still be cocked up!
