how do this kind of ones work, coz when i use mIRC its to chat only and to me it was just an idle chatroom...

they use the dcc protocol thingy
don't know the technicalities behind this, but they set up a direct connection between ur comp and the one u want to dl from
usually it's just a matter of typing some command like:
!Camelot
in the main chat, and the connection is made and u get to c a list of what this dude has to offer. Then u choose "!get file blabla.mp3" or somethin' like that
Then u have to sit in queue, how long varies from hours to minutes
