I'm just wondering what that switch is? The one he controls with his left hand. Is it a fader? And what does it do...is he fading from the beat to the vinyl he is scratching?

yes its just a volume fader just like u would find on any mixer nothing special
hes just basically fading the song in an out

pardon my ignorance, but is there a difference between a "fader" and a "cross fader"? When sleepydragon says he is fading the song in and out...he isn't fading in another track at the same time is he...thats what a cross fader does right?

A fader is basically anything on a mixer that will fade. This could be a voume fader or a cross-fader. It's basically the opposite of a rotary. The cross fader is used to change between the channels on the mixer. QBert has a song on his ipod playing and he's using the fader he's fucking around with to fade what's being played on the ipod in and out.
