3 turntables.. for the ultra talented... advantages? just means ya use a wider variety of tracks at once? yea.. thats it..
ummm u can still use 1 mixer... a lot of mixers these days has like a billion inputs..
i think even the basic vestax pmc 170 have 3 inputs too

Question mixing record and CD turntables....

While we're on the topic, I was wondering if you could use a combination of record and CD turntables with one mixer, like two record turntables and a CD player, or two CD players and a record turntable.

The reason I'm asking is cuz I'm considering buying some DJ equipment and I'm undecided on exactly what equipment to get. Now I know that most DJs swear by their records and many frown upon spinning anything from CDs, but I'm a big fan of technology, and I'm also a bit of a cheapskate (always looking for the most economical alternative). I want to learn how to spin both records and CDs, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to invest hundreds of dollars buying records when I can just as easily get most of the songs on CD cheaper (and sometimes faster). Of course, there is some stuff I would still have to (or prefer to) get on record, but I think I would want to spin with a combination of CDs and records. Another thing that has always sorta pissed me off about records is the record hiss (especially when I hear it on professional mixed CDs... Aaargghh!). I've heard a lot of people argue that records have better sound quality than CDs, but personally I think that annoying record hiss that is often heard during slow parts of songs OUTWEIGHS any minor increase in sound quality that may be achieved from records. Plus to the untrained ear over a loud sound systems (like the ones at clubs and parties) there is not a noticeable difference between the two mediums...

I'm NOT looking to become a big-time DJ here... I just wanna learn and just spin for fun for my friends and maybe at some small house parties here where I live, and see where it goes from there.

By the way, the styles of music I would most likely be spinning would be:

- Hard Fast Trance
- Goa/Psy Trance = http://goatrance.free.fr
- Freeform/Trancecore = see the links on my music page

and maybe some Acid Techno/Trance, and Epic/Progressive Trance...

Silly Sal :P

Hmm ... FinnHawk, I am facing a similar problem right now. I currently own a pair of 1200s and I'm seriously considering getting a pair of CD decks to accompany them. It is easier to get out-of-press tracks and older stuff on CD (even if it has to be through downloading MP3s) than on vinyl ... and if you have both CD decks and turntables it is easy to incorporate both in your sets.

Most mixers (even the two-channel ones) have at least two inputs per channel - one phono (for turntables) and one line (for cd decks) so there's no problem in hooking it all up. All you have to do is to flip a switch on your mixer to select what unit you want to use.

The reason why vinyl is more popular as DJ medium than CDs is simply because it is easier to use, NOT the sound quality (this has been discussed a while ago in the DJ forum, so you might want to take a look there).

If you think that CDs would be right for you, then by all means go for it. IMO, the best solution would be to have two turntables and two CD decks hooked up to a 4-channel mixer, so you know what to go for if you have the money.

and another thing, FinnHawk ... nice music taste !

peace

Well three turntables are handy if you wanna put some vocals ,while you got two songs in the mix,or even to scratch your ass off.the only one I know that doe sthat is Dj wout, the man behind the keys of sylver.
Corvin Dalec turned once with twelve turntables on a party back here in Belgium,he tried to break the record that was set by himself with ten turntables, and during the day he played with six tables at a radiostation, but actually ,those weren't real songs, the result was one song,so on one table he had (only)a bassline,on te other ,he had some(only)vocals,....
