Read This! please read.. interesting theory..

Allright. I've been thinking about this for sometime now, and I'm sure alot of you have before too. Basically, I think that people judge songs by the artist, and not the actual content of the song. Let's pretend that there is an "average" song by a well known artist, and there is an "average" song by an unheard artist. Many people will give more credit to the song by the well known artist.

We have all seen an example of this lately with the whole "Gouryella - Ligaya" prank. A amature producer creates an allright sample, throws the name Gouryella on it, and people think its a killer tune. But if he labeled the track as "Amature Bob - Ligaya", people wouldn't give this track the time or day

In the past, I too have fallen victim to this phenomenon, but I have found a solution. Whenever I download songs (from here, ftps, audiogalaxy, etc..), I add them to my winamp playlist. Then when I want to listen to music, I put the winamp playlist on shuffle, minimize the program, and listen to the songs without knowing who they're by, or what they're called. That way I am completly fair when judging the music. It's actaully kinda neat, because I sometimes find myself liking unknown artists more that big name ones.

Anyways, I suggest that everyone at least trys this, because I think that some artists are getting too much credit, while others aren't getting enough.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Word. I totally agree with you

But on the other hand, many people thought the ligaya prank tune sucked too.

I agree with you!

But on the other hand.........some songs take a little while to be liked. You've got to listen to them a couple of times before you really, really, really enjoy them! So, when I first hear a song, I don't know yet if I really, really really like it, so I've got to listen to it a couple of times. But, with my really really really fast internet connection I get a lot of these songs. I don't have time to listen to all those songs over and over again, so when I look at the titles, I check who the producers are and I kinda guess if I'm going to like it by songs/producers from the past. So that way I usually delete a lot of songs which are pretty unknown, because I don't want my hd to get too full. And in the end, if those songs were really worth it (and I deleted them) I'll come by them eventually by all the 'publicity' at forums 'n stuff and download them again to check them......again.

But I totally agree. It's better to check out songs without the titles, to get a neutral judgement. Also very important is that when your winamp is minimalised you don't skip through a song. That way you can really get into it and appreciate it more instead of listen to it in 20 secs at 3 different places and judge them too soon.

Greetz,

Kamaya.

I liked the fake Ligaya before and I like it now. If I hated it then I'd still hate it, who knows I may hate the real Ligaya.

Cool

I do agree with this but I personally only buy trance cd's mostly containing songs that I have never heard before and I am rarely disappointed by the result. Most of the time when I am listening to a cd, I don't even know who the artist is, nor do I care because the song is so good. This is why it will be a long while before you see any trance artists win a grammy or some other award because since nobody knows who the artist is, it doesn't matter how good the song is, it won't win. That's my 2 cents.

I have so many songs that are by DJ's that you may have never heard of before then. Examples of tunez when I heard the artist for the first time:

Riva - Stringer
Yahel - Voyage
Ralphie B - Massive
Perpetuous Dreamer - Sound of Goodbye
Moogwai - Viola

Just a few toonz of artists I had never heard of before the song. I listened to everyone I hadn't heard of except Tiesto (was told he was da bomb) and they were right

Yes yes, very true. I do that sometimes without noticing it too. But one prime example of your theory is Paul van Dyk. Now I dont know if some of you actually like Take Me Higher or Theme From Anti-Drug Campaign, but let me tell you... I bet if nobody heard it before and I put my name on it, everybody would think it is average, good, or sucks. But if PvD's name is on it, they'll think its massive! Now I have nothing against PvD, but I'm just using him as an example since I dont like his recent stuff and most people do.

lol.. I've done this before.. make a track, and name it by a big artist, and see what the other person says. It's always a more open opinion though, if they think it's garbage they wont hesitate to say it

Very good point, I must admitt i have purchased 12" just because its by a very good producer and i feel that he wont dissapoint....Very smaller producers will make better tunes that we just dont reconise becuase of there names..

Many artists will make one huge hit and then dissapear only to be heard from again a long time later or maybe even never again. A lot of amazing tunes lately that can't be ID'd from livesets are a good example that songs can be good without being labeled (no pun intended) by a certain artist. Sometimes everyones looking for a specific tune and it's done by someone they've never heard of.
