Sasha & John Digweed - Northern Expsosure Redux

Taken from Resident Advisor:

"Sasha & John Digweed are launching an expanded version of their beloved 1996 mix album, Northern Exposure, to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Out September 25th, Northern Exposure Redux will be released digitally as well as on CD and vinyl via Late Night Tales. It includes brand new ambient and dub reworks from the duo as well as a reworked version of Underworld's "Dark and Long" from former Underworld member Darren Emerson, which is out now.

"We rebuilt and reshaped the material using modern tools," the duo said in a statement. "We tried to refocus it through a modern lens, drawing inspiration from reinterpretations by dub artists like Bill Laswell and Mad Professor. It feels like we discovered a forgotten version that was hiding behind the beats.”

Originally released in 1996, Northern Exposure became the first mix CD to be certified gold in the UK. The compilation became the first in a trilogy completed by Northern Exposure 2 in 1997 and Northern Exposure: Expeditions in 1999, though neither topped the critical and commercial success of the original. The entire series sold over a million copies worldwide, a 2004 Resident Advisor feature on Sasha noted.

Earlier this year, John Digweed returned to New York's Twilo club for its 20th anniversary reunion, sans Sasha, where the duo held a residency from 1996 to 2001. A recording from that night is on the way."

Saw this on Bandcamp's front page and was like, "whhaaaa...??" I do wonder if this will include all the original versions of the tracks, or were 'reworked' to clear the licensing issues these old mixes often stumble into.

What does redux mean? I can look it up, but that word must have significant implications when it comes to this anniversary release.

It's a 3CD release. The first two discs are exactly the same as the original UK Northern Exposure release with remastered sound quality, with the sole exception of Dark & Long at the end of CD2 which has been remade by Darren Emerson due to them being unable to clear the licensing of the Underworld original. CD3 is a bonus mix with some "ambient dub" remixes of the original tracks from both discs by Sasha & Digweed. I've listened to it. It's fine but nothing any more interesting than generic chill out mixes. There's also a full vinyl release of the original, unmixed tracks.

So basically, token chill out disc aside, it's just a 30th anniversary re-release of the original album. Nice if you don't already own it, I suppose.

According to this webpage it looks like you can also get the digital downloads of the tracks from all 3 CDs unmixed.

Saw this elsewhere "Late Night Tales says that Pete Lazonby’s “Wavespeech” and “Kites” (now credited to Aether feat. Maria Nayler) vary slightly from the original CD"

Awkward

Not sure I'm seeing it because I'm a big fan, but there seems to be resurgence of both Sasha and Digweed's earlier material. A couple of interviews with Sasha regarding his GU (SF and Ibiza) mixes, Sasha auctioning off his old tracks, now this redux album. Wondering if this is just coincidental timing or some sort of cash grab to capitalize on nostalgia. If the latter, "here, take my money!!!"

cometh the era of rereleasing the "great ones" of mix cds because the potent ideas have already been crafted and new music is just a subpar rehash akin to video game companies remastering their golden games.

nah, its just a mix cd. ill take a gander.

Didn't spot the Aether thing, I must admit. There's been a "Junior Vasquez NE Edit" of Wavespeech knocking around since at least the 2008 digital release on, uh, Northern Exposure Recordings (Die Hard joke: "No relation"), so I'm not sure what the difference is there.

They're doing an unmixed digital download option, which I might grab just to finally get a decent digital copy of the Xylem Flow Mix of Vine Leaf. Hopefully the unmixed tracks have been remastered along with the actual mix sets.
